New 15gb with windows - what to do?

Hi all,

I am a freshman to the ipod and have just had one bought for me by my girlfriend while we were in the states on hols. Will not get it until my birthday, which is the 7th august, but have spent time so far browsing the web sites etc. and found your one the most informative.

I have some questions that may have been asked in other forums, but cannot find them. Would appreciate some advice:

1. Can someone tell me in a quick numbered list, exactly what I have to do with my new ipod to get it working with windows (I have USB 2.0)
Bear in mind I am suffering a rare form of ipod turture as I am not allowed to open it until the 7th on my birthday and therefore cannot read the literature and am assuming I will have problems.

2. Have obviously seen all the adverse comments about MMJB. I have this already (from a previous MP3 player) and therefore have all of my CD collection on my computer ripped using MMJB at 160kbps. I have not had many problems with it in the past. However, will I be better off using ephpod? Can I use it with USB as it seems on it's website it only states for use with firewire. I do not always keep my music collection on my main hard drive and sometimes move it to a portable hard drive. Will this cause problems with synching if I only have new songs in the my music folder? Will it automatically delete the old ones from the ipod. I really want it to leave the old ones there and to add new ones.
I was in the apple store in washington and one of the assistants said that when MMJB synchs it actually wipes the hard drive and reloads all the music. Is this true?

3. Are the provided headphones really that bad as mentioned here by a number of users?

4. I live in Hong Kong and am having problems finding a good apple supplier. Anyone know anywhere I can go?

I know there are a lot of questions, but hoping you will be benevolent to an ipod virgin.

Thanks,

Paul

Hey Paul.

1st welcome to the Louge bla bla bla ....

1) Either get a USB 2.0 cable, for about $20 i think, or get a firewire card for the same price. The speed is about the same. The only advanced with the firewire is that the iPod can charge through it. Just go to your national apple homepage and get a cable.

2) I think ephPod have all the settings you want. TRy download it, and check out the functions, or read the online help somewher on the ephpod homepage. I personally use media center 9, which is a great program for transfering, and also got all the functions of MMJB.

3) Yes the do suck really badly... Get some sennheiser MX400/500 if you like earbuds ($10-$20), or some Sony mdr-d66 "eggoes" if you like over ear style (i think they are called). you should be able to get the D66 lokal, cuz your in Asia. They have a really great sound. For earphone info check also head-fi.org ;) that a really great forum also.

4) apple.hk ? Dont know...

Only took me about two seconds to find info on the Apple Store in HK. The number is 800-908-988.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

Southside, I was lazy and have now found some stores on the apple HK website.

Pank (or anyone) thanks for the advice. I have already got a USB cable. Bought this in the states. What I was really after was what I should do with the software. I presume I load the software supplied and then do some formatting for it to be recognised on windows. Then do I have to do the update on the apple site and then I can load on MMJB and then can I load on ephpod and cut my MP3's with MMJB and load them onto the ipod with ephpod.

One more quickie. If I load on MP3's to the ipod and then remove them from my PC onto a portable hard drive can I then just add new ones to the ipod without it deleting the ones that are no longer on my main hard drive.

Thanks.

Holas paul...first of all i am hoping that you do not have Windows ME...because apple tech has personally told me that USB with ME is not supported and due to that factor no support will be available...of course i just purchased a firewire...for 2000 or XP USB 2.0 shouldn't be a problem at all...98SE not sure..

About your software...all you do is put the cd in and let the baby load :) it will load several programs...the ipod manager updater musicmatch and this other audio program that i never bothered to install...personally i am not used to Ephpod...i kno some PC users want to slap me for saying this...but i am used to MMJB and i have had no problems...and if the ipod you recieved is the recent 3G one...there shouldn't be anything for you to update seeing that your ipod should already be up to date (at least mine was when i purchased mine recently)

Regarding your "quickie"...yes you can add on songs into your ipod w/o it deleting your previous playlist...however i recommend you keeping a backup (esp. if you have over 1000 mp3's like me) because there may come a time when your ipod could jus freeze up (unlikely but still ya never kno) you will have to use Ipod updater to restore your ipod...which reformats it back to factory settings, therefore deleting all of your music, data, etc.

BTW i could't help answering the question on the earphones...personally mine isn't even opened lol...i actually had the benefit of owning the Sony MDR-EX71's (this is to clarify pank2002)...they are excellent and they come in white too if you want (although i have black)...it should be easy for you to get because i had to order mine from someone in hong kong via ebay...i hope i helped enjoy your ipod..it has officially become my baby...

Congratulations Paul, you're about where I was this time last week, waiting to get your hands on your new 'pod... :)

Couple of suggestions:

Firstly, yes I reckon you'll be wanting to use EphPod instead of MMJB - what you should be doing now is uninstalling MMJB and downloading EphPod from http://www.ephpod.com (don't get the one that includes Macopener, you don't need it). If you run EphPod while you still have MMJB installed you may encounter problems.

Secondly, before inserting that CD that comes with the iPod, think twice. All you need to do at this point is convert your iPod to Windows, you don't need any of that additional software (if you have EphPod) and it might create problems. I'd advise simply downloading the Windows updater directly from Apple support (http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/) and running that once you connect your iPod to your PC.

Thirdly, while you're on the Apple support site, grab the .pdf of the manual, that way you can read it without breaking your girlfriend's birthday embargo... ;)

edit - ooh, one last thing, you should grab id3tagit (http://www.id3-tagit.de/english/index.htm), strip out all your id3ver1 tags and update all your mp3s to id3ver2 before you upload them to your new iPod.

thanks for all the advice

I am not sure i understand about the id3v1 tags v id3v2 tags.

What does this mean and how long will it take to redo about 900 songs

can you also tell me if anyone has experienced eac for ripping mp3's is this good, or if not can someone suggest something else

id3v1 is the old version, and id3v2 is the newer version. It's best to go with id3v2 since you can add more information and create you own genre tags, so I can put Hamasaki Ayumi in JPop instead of just Pop, or Shiina Ringo in JRock rather than Rock

With mass tagging in ID3-Taggit it really shouldn't take that long, provided you have the songs in a good directory structure like album/title or album - title. I'd guess you could do all of them in under an hour depending on how much tweaking you need to do, and it's better to do if now rather than later. I'm having to redo genre tags for 3000-4000 songs, since I want to go to sub genre's so that I can use smart playlists in the future.

EAC is the best ripper on the market and IMHO is the only program to use for ripping tunes. It's a little hard to use at first but it will give you the best sound. You can find a guide on how to set it up and use it at http://www.chrismyden.com/nuke/modules.php?op=modload&name=Elite_DAE&file=painless

As for software I would recomend you get Media Center 9. It's well worth the $40. Plus you get a great all-in-one program.

Paul, I thought you had already ripped all your CDs, but if not then CDex would be an excellent free all-in-one (ripping and encoding) alternative to spending money on MC9. :)

Linkage - http://www.cdex.n3.net/ - alternate: http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos/

The point about id3v1 and id3v2 tags is simply that if you have some songs tagged with one and some tagged with the other, you might have problems when you upload them to your iPod - there have been cases reported on the forum where the iPod will only recognise the latter. Best to use the time now to ensure that your whole collection is tagged consistently.

As Bill says, fixing your tagging in id3tagit should take no time at all, even for 900 songs.

Just a clarification, the only program that have the id3v1 vs. v2 tagging problem is ephpod. The iPod doesn't read tags, your software that uploads does.

So, if you're using ephpod delete id3v2 tags (**edit: I mean id3v1 tags)**. Xplay does not seem to have this problem, and MC9 doesn't because it inputs the values not based on the tags but the the property values from MC9's database (which also coincidentally match the tags, but that's not the point).

Adam,

You mean delete the id3v1 tags right? If I have to delete the id3v2 tags then I will delete ephPOD instead.

I have a buddy who has Ephpod and he loves it but I have had absolutely NO problems with MMJB 7.5 on my XP machine. I would probably start off going with the most simplistic route for you and trying it with MMJB that you are already accustomed to. You can sync your whole collection or just drag/drop add/delete individual songs/albums to iPod from MMJB as well. If you have problems or don't like it then try Ephpod. Just my two cents.
