Firewire/USB2 Multi-cable

Why do I need this Firewire/USB2 Multi-cable?
If I plug my ipod into my PC via the firewire socket to sync or play music the ipod charges without being connected to the adapter.
Why then do I need to buy the Firewire/USB2 Multi-cable - I'm confused!

You only need it if you don't have a firewire card and you want to connect your iPod to your PC through USB.

If you've got firewire, then you're all set. You don't need the USB cable.

The firewire portion of the firewire/usb cable is there to provide power when using your iPod w/USB (since it doesn't supply power). You connect the USB part to your PC and the firewire part to your AC adaptor (which you plug into the wall obviously). This way power gets to the iPod.

But, you're good to go. Just use firewire. Much cleaner IMO.

for ppl with out firewire. USB doesnt provide power so they connect the USB end to the comp and the firewire to the ac adapter

On great, so I have a usb cable being delivered that I don?t need, then!

Is there any way to sop the ipod starting in "mounted" mode when my PC boots. I would just like to leave it plugged into the cradle and start in "music playing mode" when my pc boots up or is restarted.

you could have kept the cable used it as a secondary power sourse so you can just dock and charge and let it play music ;)

It does that anyway with the cradle. I thought I had to buy the cable to do that - you don't!

If you are going to buy a second cable, (e.g. to carry with you) you might as well get the Firewire/USB cable as it costs the same as the plain Firewire to Dock connector cable...

agreed, and I did buy the cable so I could have one that just charges it and one that syncs
