iPOD making you organize your music
After using my iPOD for the past 4 to 5 months there is one thing that I have noticed. I have really become anal about my music library. I must have all my CD's ripped and cateloged properly. I am attahching album release dates, so I may archive my mp3's by year. I have a database I have compiled that I back up all the time to include all of the info I need. I do that so I can make the most of my music and sort out what songs I won't on my iPOD. I was wondering if the iPOD and whatver software you use MC9, MMJB, etc.. give you the inspiration that I have. That or I'm developing some sort of OCD!

Oh yeah! Absolutely... It's not really being anal though - the level of organisation of your collection really does affect how well the iPod works as a portable music library, so it's fair enough to want everything ship-shape. :-)
I haven't achieved Year listings yet! It's my next goal. As for genres, I don't know... I don't really like pigeonholing music, because a classification I give it one day will feel wrong when my mood changes. Is The Commitments blues, or soul? And within the album, there are certainly different genres at play.
So I've abandoned Genre listing. I guess it's just about making sure the categories you need are all squared away... :-)

I agree totally about the genres. There are so many different ones. I am thinking about coming up with my own generes. Something to just classify stuff for me. I don't know.

... talking about genres ... if you make up your own (just typing in - i'm using EAC at the mo) will it be listed as such? ... i ripped some early electro (Man Parrish, Herbie Hancock, etc.) and typed in electro (electronica doesn't fit - save that for Ladytron etc.) ... it's (Genre: electro) there when i find the track thro' artist but isn't listed under genres (in RealPlayerOne - no flames, it's what's on my work computer in my defence - no defence, I know) ... and, you're right it does force you to really get to grips with your collection, allowing you to appreciate it more, but seems so time consuming (especailly doing it now in MP3 and again in AAC when it becomes easier for Windows - on that point, it does seem you'll be able to covert MP3 straight to AAC, but most people suggest an entire re-rip from CD to maintain quality ... any experience/tests on the degradation of quality of straight MP3 to AAC? i.e. how noticeable will the quality difference be?) ...

Genres?
Not to get too far off-topic, but dig this -- if you don't want to use Genres, why not use it for something else?
I mean, it's just a browsable database field. You could put whatever you want in it.
Let's say, instead of Genre, you can instead use it for "My music" and "My Wife's Music" and so on.
Then, when you browse by Genre on your iPod, you'll see those two categories, "My Music" and "My Wife's Music" and can then browse by them!
Same goes for Composer, too! I use Composer as "Rating" instead... so when I browse via Composer on my iPod, I see:
1-star
2-star
3-star
4-star
5-star
Unrated
This doesn't affect anything else on the iPod, of course, it just lets me browse by rating, even though it still "looks" like I'm browsing by Composer on the iPod's menu.
What other categories would you use a "custom" field for, if not Genre or Composer?
I totally agree that the iPod is making more and more folks get their music organized. It's a necessity!

That's a nice twist ... :)

Great idea, Kurt... Once I have my Year tags done, I might use Genre to put them into ten-year "bins" for Sixties, Seventies etc. Nice!

Good idea! Maybe I'll do that one day, when I have the time.
