Firewire+USB 2.0 combo cards - Ipod compatibility
Hey guys, this is my first post here and I've yet to buy my Ipod, because I want to make sure my PC is set up properly first. I've searched plenty on the threads here to know that if I'm going to get a Firewire card it would wise to get one with a Via chipset. Well, I'm looking at getting a Firewire/USB 2.0 combo card because I'd like to have the option of both and I need more USB ports anyway. Does anyone have any opinions of something like this?

I've read horrible things about the Adaptec DuoConnect and I don't want something that's buggy at all. Any advice guys?

I've been using the Adaptec DuoConnect for the last 6 weeks and seems fine. I did have problems initially, but that was due to Win98SE and once updated to cope with firewire it worked fine.
Generally, Adaptec has a very good reputation which is why I went for the DuoConnect but if you've read about bugs on specific systems then obviously be wary, but personally (on a Dell Dimension 4100, w 3gen 30GB iPod, connecting via Firewire) seems to work OK.

My system is a Dell Dimension 8200 running Win XP. I've read that the Adaptec DuoConnect can cause problems if you try running Firewire and USB 2.0 devices at the same time. So that's why I'm wary. That and the fact that it's $100 :)

I can't verify the reported problems with simultaneous Firewire and USB2 usage causing conflicts since I'm yet to use the USB2 ports on my DuoConnect. And, yes the $100 price tag is steep, especially considering the potential conflicts.

i recommend that you buy a separate usb2.0 card. i bought one on ebay for $8 and it works great. if you need firewire, you can buy a separate one too. that way you will have more ports than you could possibly need (before you need a new computer) for a very low price. no need to pay $100.
