VIA Firewire card?

I suppose this isn't exactly a problem, and I'm a bit awry on posting it here as I remember (must have been on another forum) a Firewire problems thread which I can't find.

In any case, I'm coming upon a 15gb 3G iPod fairly soon and I was wondering whether the inbuilt Firewire port, whose controller is apparently 'VT6306 VIA Fire II IEEE-1394' has a remote chance of working properly.

Thanks.

Well, with my experience, the on-baord firwire port on my mobo doesn't work well with the iPod. I tried several tweaks and just could not get it to work. It charges fine, it just doesn't show up on the PC. I bought an Adaptec 4300 and it works with no problems. That kind of irratated me, because I chose the mobo for the firewire feature it had on it. I would have rather had another PCI slot instead.

I say try it, you never no. There are some pretty good firwire cards out there. You might want to search the forums and see what else you can come up with. Also, if you don't feel like spending the scratch on a firwire card, the new iPods can sync, but not charge via USB2.0. If that helps!

Welcome to the iPodlounge!

I use the texas instruments firewire card and it works like a charm! only bad part is that it costs $56

Sorry to pull a topic back out of Page 3, but I'd like to report that my motherboard FireWire port worked perfectly upon connection, even though it runs on the same VIA chip as the one ToddW above told me he tried unsuccessfully to use. :D I guess they're not all the same... I'm a happy camper: no extra card to buy.

For posterity, my motherboard is an ASUS P4PE.
