Wow it actually works!
On ashawlys advice i brought a new firewire card (an adaptec 4300) and all my problems are solved. Before i couldnt get any music on my ipod and i would get the yellow exclamation in device manager on xp. Even the restore wouldnt work. Now i can transfer music and its all fine. One thing tho, with the updater/restore program the update button appears greyed out and i cannot click it. Ive used ephpods inbuilt updater but it doesnt seem to detect my ipod. I just wondered what exactly if anything, am i missing out on by using 1.1.2 instead of 1.1.3 . Thanx for all the help and i can finally listen to some music on this overpriced mirror!

Perhaps Adaptec should give some royalties to ashawley for recommending them so often. ;)

Um, if Updater is greyed out is Restore available? It might be that either a) the iPod is already the version of the updater your using or b) it's not been formatted to FAT32 yet and can't be updated.

I wish they would give me some royalties. In fact I decided to eat my own dog food so to speak and just ordered one. ($41 on Amazon, free shipping too) :)
The only reason I recommend 'em is that in over a year of 'podding here at the 'lounge that card never fails. (Well, I can't remember a time when it did).
And after Kurt just got one and said how great it was...well, by, by OrangeMicro, hello Adaptec! :D

well on the about screen it says its formatted for windows... and it chargers when plugged into the firewire card... but it cant be read, why?

darkpiece what problem do you get and have you tried some other synching programs like ephpod. The only prob i have with my adaptec is that i cant seem to update my firmware but then i looked and its already 1.2.2 and i think thats the latest version anyway isnt it?

darkpiece, you didn't answer one crucial piece of information: is the "Restore" button enabled?
If so, you can do that...but check the About Screen, check the version number. I don't know if you have a 3gen or a 2gen, on a 3 gen if you have the latest updater your iPod's version will say 2.0.1 (if it's been used), if it says 2.0, download the 2.0.1 updater from apple.
