Getting an I-pod got some questions though

Hi sorr yif this is in the wrong forum but I could not find one that applied to this!!
I will be getting my 15gb ipod hopefully on Friday and I have some questions:-

1 First whats the best software for Windows XP and the I-pod that most people use?

2 Is the I-pod ok for jogging with or not as it is a hd player?

3 When not using the player is it ok to leave in the dock?

4 I know it comes with games on it but can you download more?

5 Any plans for the I-pod to use Ogg Vorbis file type?

Thats it for now Ithink if not I can always add!!

Thanks and be kind this is my first post!!

P.S What other cool things can you do with the I-pod apart from play music??

1. Depends on who you talk to. IMHO, overall, I think the best is Media Center 9--that's what I use. It's forty dollars, and if the cost is an issue, the Ephpod would be my second choice (free).

2. Results vary. I use mine on an elliptical and when I lift weights, but I'm leery to jog with it. The gen2 5gig supposedly does the best with jogging. I'd consider a flash based memory MP3 player for jogging.

3. Yes

4. Don't know

5. No, and extremely unlikely that Apple will support Ogg in the future--they're pushing AAC for the iTunes music store.

And welcome to the lounge!

No way to download games. Never even touched them on mine. But I'm a purist. ;) And I like my battery life.

1. I use Ephpod since it's free (and free is always good). It's a million times superior to MMJB. Don't use MM at all except for it's smart-tagging which works well.

3. I leave mine docked all the time. It's actually good to keep the battery charged a lot. Half-charges, from what I've read, doesn't kill the pod.

As for other cool things, the best is disk mode because you can put anything on it. It also frees up HDD space since you can play your mp3's right from it when docked. I don't need all my mp3's on my computer anymore.

The best thing of all though is the reaction you get when you pull it out in a crowded area. Everyone asks about it. :)

What program would you need? This is the Windows Forum, so I would assume the iPod is formatted as Windows, so the only programs you need are EphPOD, and your favorite tagger and ripper. All of those can be free.

You only need MacOpener if it is a Mac iPod.

Isn't Musicmatch fun? Personally, I would delete the Musicmatch directory and remove all references to it in the registry, but then I love hacking my registry.

I was using Musicmatch since it was a beta, and had even bought a copy of it, and it really is not and has never been a good ripper for music. It uses the Fraunhofer encoder which is no where near as good as LAME, and it doesn't format tags properly.

EAC/LAME.

You can download it and configure it here:

I use XP and Media Center 9. So far no problems.

2 Is the I-pod ok for jogging with or not as it is a hd player?

I use it on the elliptical, while weight lifting, while jogging in place on recovery stations at Curves, on the stairmaster, and while brisk walking. So far no problems at all.

3 When not using the player is it ok to leave in the dock?

Mine doesn't dock, but I do keep mine connected to my 'puter. I just "eject" it so the drive doesn't spin, but it keeps charging. I find it doesn't get as hot that way. (It is ejected so the computer thinks it isn't connected, but it is still connected via the firewire port for charging.)

4 I know it comes with games on it but can you download more?

Dunno...

5 Any plans for the I-pod to use Ogg Vorbis file type?

Not that I'm aware of.

That's what's so awesome! If I feel like Billy Joel, wham...I'm listening to Billy Joel. Showtunes? Bam...Radiohead...BAM! LOVE IT! I've got about 1200 songs and 15 books on this one little box.
