Ahhhh Help!
I made a post a few weeks ago about how my firewire wasn't working...and I finally got it to work (it said your computer has detected new hardware...is there a way I can check so I know 100% it is installed...I know I got to like computer/properties, but what do I look for)...anyway I think that is working, but there is a new problem...I put in the IPod Setup disk and at the part where you have to plug in your ipod during the setup...the ipod isn't being detected...during the configuration part or something...is this normal and what should I do?
Thanks in advance!
I just want to get this freaking thing to work, lol.

You'll get there in the end- belive me!
What system are you using - ie me, 2k, xp? MM, MC9, ephpod??
The best way to make sure something has installed correctly is to check the device manager (for 2k & xp right click my computer and select manage - Device manager is there) find the device in question, and if its there, with no yellow exclamation marks, you should be ok to go!
Let us know!

I have Windows ME...and I saw that question mark, BUT IT HAD THE EXCLAMATION MARK...what should I do?

Try opening your computer, taking out firewire card, and putting it back in.
Windows should recognize it.
# 6 Re: Ahhhh Help!
what has the exclamation mark?
firewire card or iPOD?
# 7 Re: Ahhhh Help!
The firewire card.
Scotch at 2007-11-15 17:12:26 >

# 8 Re: Ahhhh Help!
I did that, and nothing. Should I take it out. Turn on the computer without it in. Then shut down. Put it back in, and try again.
But just opening it, taking it out, and putting it right back isn't working.

I installed a Belkin F5U501, XP said it installed correctly. When I plugged in my iPod for the first time, it started charging it but did not recognize it otherwise. I returned that card and bought a Belkin F5U503-APL (which from all outward appearances was the same card) and it has worked perfectly ever since. It might be the card you have, just because it installed does not mean it will work with the iPod. Good luck...
# 10 Re: Ahhhh Help!
before you start messing with hardware, try this: (im assuming that you uninstalled your firewire card, am i correct in this assumption?)
Go to the device manager (start-control panel-system-hardware tab-device manager) in the case of xp, find your own way in in another os. Now, right click on the computer icon at the top (should have the computers name for networking etc) (alternatively, you may click on any place in the tree), and click search for new hardware/changes(should be only option). It should p&p install it no problem.
If you still have problems after this, mssg me, email me, or somethin and we can go 1 on 1.
# 11 Re: Ahhhh Help!
Are you sure it's not there? It will show up under 1394 Host Controllers in Device Manager. Have you checked there?
What kind of card is this btw?
Oh, and I'm moving this to the Windows iPod Problems section as it's clearly of a technical nature.

Scotch:
I need to say two things:
1) Please make your subject lines descriptive. Just saying "Help" (as you've done in both your cross-posts) is not very informative.
2) Also, do not cross-post in these forums. They are very active and your post will get answered.
I'm merging your two threads as you've got so much info going back and forth between them.

I have the Belkin APL...I have something that says 1394 Bus Controller, but I don't think that is it?
Scotch at 2007-11-15 17:18:31 >

# 14 Re: Ahhhh Help!
Also...when I clicked the Bus Controller thing, under it, it says:
PCI OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller

Alright, well I just found out from Belkin that the firewire is working, but now the problem is when I put the start up/loading disk in, during the part where you plug your i-pod in, MY COMPUTER DOESN'T DETECT IT.

# 17 Re: Ahhhh Help!
The OHCI 1394 Compliant blah, blah is your firewire card.
So, windows has detected it. It's just that the iPod isn't working with it.
The Belkin cards are hit and miss. There's another thread just above yours (regarding win2k) where a user is having the same problem w/a Belkin card.
My advice, swap it out for one of the known good cards:
Adaptec 4300 (always works)
Orangelink Cards from OrangeMicro (works great for me)
Usually any VIA-chipset based card will work fine.
Make sure you can return them if they don't work, but just get another card.

What stores are those found at?
Scotch at 2007-11-15 17:23:36 >

# 19 Re: Ahhhh Help!
...has the Adaptec 4300, at least our local one does so I assume it's at all of them.

I don't know where you live, so how would I know. ;)
A CompUSA, BestBuy should have them. Or your local Office Depot, Staples might even have those models. Depends.
You could also get them on-line from a good computer store (www.cdw.com)

Alright, well I put the disks in and did everything, and now my Ipod when plugged in keeps saying "Do Not Disconnect" and has been doing that for like 30 minutes and has a flashing circle with the bar through it...What exactly am I suppose to do next to put music on it...I opened the IPod manager and said it needed to be reformatted for my computer, I did that, but it said error.
What do I do?
Scotch at 2007-11-15 17:26:43 >

# 22 Re: Ahhhh Help!
Alright, well when I plug it in...it says "Do Not disconnect" and it keeps flashing...that the Ipod Manager screen it says:
Unable to read the format of the I-Pod plugged in.
This IPod needs to be reformatted for use on your PC. Click on the update button below to run the IPod Updater application that will allow you to reformat or restore your Ipod.
I click "Run Updater", and then:
It says "Can't open IPod"
PLEASE HELP!
Scotch at 2007-11-15 17:27:48 >

# 23 Re: Ahhhh Help!
Now it says something about the IPod and the Reformatted aren't compatible...why the heck is all of this happening!
Scotch at 2007-11-15 17:28:48 >

# 24 Re: Ahhhh Help!
OK, "Do Not Disconnect" is a good thing. That's what you want it to say. It will always say that when connected to our PC.
Does the iPod show up in My Computer as a drive? It should. If it doesn't, open up iPod manager and make sure "enable firewire disk mode" is checked.
Try the updater again. But this time, click on the "Restore" button. You access the Updater not from iPod manager in this case, go to Start>Programs>iPod Updater. It might work. If you still get that error, try turning off any anti-virus software you have running. Then try.
If it still doesn't work, well need to do a reformat directly in Windows (to convert it to FAT32). But let me know the results of it first.

Thanks so much...I can't even begin to say what a help you've been to me. I am going to try that now though I have a feeling it won't work...I'll reply back within 30 minutes or so.

# 26 Re: Ahhhh Help!
Alright, it shows up as a drive or whatever in My Computer as like D or E...but anyway, I did what you said, and it still doesn't work.
So what is the next thing that I do? I just want to get this freaking thing to work, *sigh*.
