Ipod problems loading tunes...
Hello,
First off, GREAT forum! I have been reading trying to get solutions for my Ipod issues, getting closer but still have a few questions.
1. I have a 10GB windows 2000 2nd generation IPOD using Ephpod and version 1.3 updater. Problems I have are is when I restored or updated to this version, the status bar goes to about 90% then gets a message stating that it 'can't unmount IPOD' not sure what this means. I reset the Ipod and it registers the correct version in the ABOUT screen. I try uploading tunes to the IPOD but once there they are ther they can only be played for a few seconds then the ipod freezes. Tried syncing to a folder with similar problems. I can load a file of MP3's to the HD via Explore then click on them and they will play fine. Diagnostic for HD comes back OK. I have sync'd just one tune at a time and it plays fine w/o freezing. I am using a VIA based firewire Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Cheers!

Well for starters the latest version of firmware released from apple is v1.2.6 for windows. v1.3 has yet to be released expect for the Mac version of the iPod. You might try reverting back to 1.2.6 first. Also, your firewire has a Via chipset? If it is a PCI firewire card you might try putting into another PCI slot. If you have a VIA chipset mobo with onboard firewire that also might be your problem. I had the same problem when I first got my iPod. I ended up getting another firewire card and that solved my probs real quick like. What chipset is your mobo, you might want to update the bios and stuff like that just to eliminate all possibilites. I would also uninstall the ipod manager if you have that installed. That is all I can think of so far.

Thanks for the initial reply...
1.3 is from (link removed by ashawley) using it I got further than I did before, perhaps I will back down to 1.26 and see what happens. Firewire is PCI card w/VIA. I will try moving it to a different slot to see what happens
Thanks

Actually, you should be able just to disconnect the iPod when you get the "Can't Unmount" error. Then connect it to the AC Adaptor and let the firmware flash. You'll see the progress bar on the iPod.
In my experience, it's been fine to disconnect during this phase of the restore/update process.
Oh, and ticklefish, I had to edit your post. The 1.3 updater (official or hacked) is not to be distributed by anyone other than Apple. We can't have links to illegal software here on the 'lounge. I know that wasn't your intention...

Thanks!
Sorry about the link, that's why I'm a newbie... I know better now. I'll try the 1.26 updater and PCI slot change. after I got the 'unmount' message, what I did was reset the Ipod. Would that complete the update or do I need to hook up the power cable etc as you noted? All recommendations are greatly appreciated. I currently have a archos that seems much easier to use at this point but I am a die hard mac at heart so will keep on going... Thanks

What I would do is start over. Make sure you disable any anti-virus program you have running. That can cause the updater to not be able to unmount the iPod.
Then run the updater, if you get the "can't unmount iPod" error, just disconnect it, don't touch anything and connect it to the AC adaptor. What you want to watch for is a progress indicator on the iPod...that's when it's reflashing the firmware.
Oh, and no problem about the link, I'd figured as much. ;)
Welcome to the 'lounge btw. :D

Updated the firmware as recommended and that worked great. Did the disk check again, was ok. Ran Ephpod and tried loading some tunes, it loads them but when they are played back they freeze. Ran ashampoo checker and the files are not corrupt or anything. They play fine when loaded on the HD portion of the IPOD through explorer and played back through media player. There is no problems loading information to HD or messages. Does this mean my firewire card is ok? I just read a post to increase change the PCI settings in the BIOS. May try that tonite as well. Do you think there are any other things to try aside from this before getting a different firewire card? Thanks a ton...
# 7 Re: Ipod problems loading tunes...
You can try the PCI adjustment. Not all BIOS' have that adjustment. I know mine doesn't...
If that fails, I'd try this test.
Grab a bunch of MP3 (say 100), copy them over to the iPod. Just put them in the root directory or in a temporary folder you make. Doesn't matter where, you'll delete them when they are done. Just use windows explorer/my computer to copy the files over.
The test is to see if you get a CRC or Disk-Write error. If you do, then you'll need to get another firewire card. If not...I'm not sure why the songs are getting cut off. I have seen that before w/bad cards though..so that could be it.

Thanks Adam,
The HD test failed. If I copy over a CD's worth, no prob, but over that I get the hardware fail etc message. I guess it is off to get another firewire card. I have a buddy with an Imac, would you recommend converting it back to mac and see if it works that way to see if it is an IPOD problem first? Again major kudos for having a place that dreary eyed lovers of the little white box can come and find a light at the end of the tunnel..
Thanks:o

Picked up a Belkin Card at Best Buy as they were out of the Adaptec... worse than ever. I've been reading about reformatting the entire drive under Explorer, do you recommend this? Is this any different than an updater restore etc... Thanks
# 10 Re: Ipod problems loading tunes...
I'm at my wits end...
Have replaced firewire card with Adaptec 4300, songs load but freeze on playback, ashampoo confirms MP3s are ok..all diagnostics seem to be ok... about to give up... bad ipod? Any last suggestions?
