firewire v. usb revisited again repeatedly

I want an ipod, and I want the 30G one. I run XP home without Firewire, ie USB only. When I buy one, since I want one real bad, what things should I consider when deciding between a new firewire card v. just using the optional USB connector. I plan on using ephpod.

The main difference is power (and someone correct me if I'm wrong). You get power through the firewire, so if you're low on charge, and going to do a long synch, you don't have to worry about running out of battery life. The USB 2.0 I believe is unpowered, although a little bit faster. For me, I'm sticking with firewire...

Yes, if you want power with the USB2.0 + firewire cable, make sure to have an outlet nearby. That's the only way to charge and transfer at the same time.

And I think you'll have to purchase the USB cable separately (it's an Apple proprietary cable). So, by the time you buy that you might just as well get a firewire cable. Only one cord to deal with then.

Just my opinion.

definitely go for the usb, over firewire. the one advantage being that you can now, use this cable and connect your ipod to any computer you want, to transfer files/data etc, just like a hard disk. most windows pcs' dont have firewire, remember that.

besides, you can buy a usb2.0 card on ebay for $6 and can connect your ipod as well as other usb devices to it.

the charging part of it isnt important. you leave it on the dock, and your ipod charges.

I got a USB2 cable as I'll be on the move soon and figured that most PCs have usb- just don't do what i did with the USB/FW cable and plug both in to the PC (not an issue if you do not have FW) it caused untold issues - showing up twice, crashing MC9.
Note to all: The FW part of the combi cable is for the mains adaptor, when using usb.
