iPod died...
I was listening to my iPod and the battery died. I plug it up and it starting making a noise like either a fan was on or the hd was spinning. It wouldn't stop making that noise. Finally, I got my computer to see it again but it couldn't tell anything about it besides the fact it was an iPod. If I reset it, it goes through the boot process and brings up all the menu options but there aren't any songs listed. I had over 1300 on it. Also, I attempt to restore but in the middle of it it shows an error message that says "Can't mount iPod". I have also gotten a message that says something about the I/O device is not responding. I hope this isn't the case but I think it might have to go back to Apple. If it does, can someone tell what to expect on their service and the turn-around time to get it back?
Thanks!
J

It does sound like something's up w/the iPod. If it makes a dreaded clicking noise when you connect it it might be bad.
Try a disk scan, this will tell you if the HDD is OK.
1. Do a reset (menu plus pause/play until the apple logo come up).
2. At the Apple logo, press the FF, Rew, Menu & Action button (that's the center button). It will scan your HDD for problems. If things are bad it'll come back w/a sad iPod icon.
If things are good, (after 20-40 minutes) you'll get a disk icon w/a check mark.
If you get the sad iPod icon, you'll need to return it. I just received a new one back from Apple service myself. Similar problem. The service was great. They will ship a box to you, you put your iPod in (just the iPod, remember to take out the firewire plug cover if you use it). Ship the puppy off and they'll have a new one to you in days.
You can track everything on line as well.
Whole process took about 5 days for me.

I came back to my iPod and it had a disk icon with a check mark in it. I plugged it back into the AC adapter and reset it. All the menu items came up and when I went into the song directory, all the songs were gone. I plugged it back into the computer and attempted to "Restore" it with 1.3. It attempts to restore for a few minutes with the line going across the screen on the computer showing the progress as well as the iPod blinking the "Do not Disconnect", the firewire icon in the left hand corner and the charging icon in the left. All of a sudden I hear, a shallow "clunk" in the iPod. At that point, the progress bar stops and the iPod stops responding. All the icons freeze and the computer stops recognizing it. The iPod icon in "My Computer" actually disappears and I have to "Reset" the iPod again to get it to do anything else and for the computer to recognize it again.
I know this is long but I wanted to give as much info as I could. Thank you for your continued assistance!

The freezing is icky. I shouldn't be doing that. Try to do the restore again. When it freezes, disconnect it and connect it to the AC adaptor. Toggle the hold switch on and off, then do a reset. There might be a progress bar on the iPod that shows it's finishing the restore.
