iPod not recognised by Win2000

My situation:

IBM T20 Laptop
WIN2000
Belkin Firewire Notebook adapter F5U512-APL (shows up as Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 134 Host Controller)

iPod 30GB

Although my card is recognised by Windows, and the iPod is getting power from the card, windows is not seeing the iPod. When I run the installer it gets to the point where it asks to connect the iPod, but never sees it.

Is this most likely a problem with the FireWire card? The packaging specifically said that it would work well with an iPod.

mil gracias

Hm...that packaging said it would work well w/the iPod? OK, have you tried putting it into forced firewire mode? With the iPod connected, do a reset (press and hold menu and pause/play until the Apple logo comes up). At the Apple logo, press the FF and Rew buttons. It should go into firewire disk mode.

See if that works. I'm surprised that your firewire card powers the iPod, most PCMCIA cards don't.

Tried to go into forced firewire mode as you suggested, but the iPod came up in disk mode and said ok to disconnect, but still is not seen by the PC. Still stuck at the configuration stage. I can feel the disk spinning in the iPod, so it is at least alive!

My Firewire card has an external power source, by the way - it is not charging just from the laptop.

thanks

Sorry to post again, but I had another clarifying question from a FireWire neophyte.

When I plug the iPod into the firewire card, before I run the the iPod installation software - will it appear as a disk, or will this only happen after configuring and formatting?

I had a similar problem with a IBM T22 laptop and windows 2k.

This is just a guess, but Win 2k sometimes has a problem assigning the iPod a drive letter.

Try this:

1. Right click on my compuer
2. Choose Manage
3. Choose disk managment
4. If the firewire card is working properly, I believe you will see the iPod in the graphics to the right, if so, there is selection for assigning a drive letter, select and assign the iPod the letter G:
5. Win 2k should now see the iPod.

don't sweat it, I had to monkey arond with win2k and by T22 for awhile before getting it to work. you will get there.

No luck in finding the iPod under Manage either. It is looking to me like it must be the firewire card, even though it claims to work on the packaging. Not having any other devices to check it out with is a bit frustrating!

Will have to run out and try another one, I guess. Any suggestions of ones known to work on t20s?

thanks...............

Best cards are:

Adaptec 4300 (always seems to work)
Orangelink cards from Orange Micro
Usually any VIA chipset based card will do the trick.

I have a smartdisk powered firewire card w/ adapter that worked with my T22. I will sell it to you for $40 plus shipping. If it doesn't work, I will return your $$ and split shippin with you.

e-mail me at sstein@gwu.edu

alternatively, bring you laptop to bestbuy or compusa and buy a card and test it out there with your iPod.

good luck

I have written to Belkin technical support about this, and have been studiously ignored. One thing I did notice, though, at Best Buy (where I purchased the iPod and card). The last few times I have visited the US, and looked at the iPod before buying, I noticed that there was ALWAYS one or more Belkin firewire cards at a reduced price because they had been returned. This should have been a clue, perhaps!

In the US next week, so will take the whole lot back and see what I can make work.

Good luck.

One thing, if you go to microsoft.com, they will list a number of windows certified pcmcia firewire cards. The certified cards tend to be more expensive, but may work better.

Also, check on IBM's website about any updates on known problems with the T20 and pcmcia cards. IBM may have an update for the T20 bios.

It took a while, but I was able to get my T22 to work with a Smartdisk Powered pcmcia firewire card. I cannot say it worked absolutely perfectly, though. Sometimes, I had to shutdown the T22 to disconnect the iPod.

But, I was due for a due computer, and my T22 is a work computer, so I just bought a PowerMac.

Keep plugging away, you will get it. Enjoy your trip to the States.

A happy ending -

Bought another firewire card, this time a SIIG brand - that also didn't work. I then saw a USB2.0 cable sitting there and just picked it up and tried it.

Worked first time like a charm. My laptop only has USB1, so it is a bit on the slow side, but at least I can now listen to my iPod to pass the time.

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

The cable I bought is an Apple firewire/USB to iPod cable. I bought it at a computer dealer that carried apple products rather than at a best buy. It was about $20, so quite a bit less than all of the firewire cards that didn't work for me

Good luck.

I bought the USB cable as well at compusa. I was able to get another laptop working via USB 1.1 no problem with the cable.

Though, the iPod still will hang occassionally and I have to shut down to disconnect.

But that solution works fine. Just when you make a big transfer, make sure you have the iPod charging.

how do you get a usb cable working with a firewire ipod though?

# 17 Re: iPod not recognised by Win2000
Sorry, the usb cable only works for gen 3 iPods. If you are having problems with your Gen 2 iPod, you will need to find a firewire card that works.
