New iPod works!
After trying for weeks to get my iPod working (lots of help here, by the way) and buying two firewire cards (Belkin and Adaptec) I finally sent it in to Apple. After waiting weeks and weeks, my new iPod came today. Guess what?? It worked as soon as I plugged it in--both firewire cards, the motherboard build-in VIA firewire, and the 2.0 USB cord I bought--they all work!! So it wasn't me, my computer, my firewire cards--it was the iPod! It was BAD! I think this is the problem with most here. If you've tried eveything else, send it back in for a new one! Could they be having source problems with build quality? I don't know, but it worked for me. Listening to my iPod after two months of trying! :)

After calling Apple Support, twice, and trying everything else, including spending over $100.00 on firewire cards and a visit to my local computer store, I called Apple Support again and told them my iPod was defective. No "ifs", "ands", or "buts". They sent me a box, overnight, and I sent it back. They said they couldn't duplicate the problem (BS) but would send me a new unit. Since mine was "personalized" (my name on the back of the case) they had to order one from Taiwan where they are all manufactured. That took three weeks.
Just a warning: Unless you just have your name on the back do not get your iPod "personalized". They could have sent me a replacement overnight except for that.
The more I think about it, the more I think they don't test the units in "Windows mode", at all. There just seems to be too many problems with Windows owners and iPods. IMHO
