I'm having pretty much the same problem and I've been trying to work it out for so long my head is spinning. It seems to boil down to the fact that my iPod2 isn't recognized by my computer. I get a pop-up in the tool bar saying "unable to recognize device plugged in to USB port." I have Windows XP, I downloaded the 2.0.1 update, the USB port has been working fine with other devices and I even changed to a different (new) USB cable. The 4 prong -6 prong adapter and dock is brand new. I've crawled all over the support section in the Apple site and can't seem to find anybody else besides neilydrum and me with this problem. What gives?

usb is backwards compatible, which means that it is irrelavant whether you have usb 1.1 or 2.0 (disregarding transfer speed). I use my ipod with my built in usb 1.1 port and it works perfectly. I can live with the slower transfer speed, and its not really that slow as my mp3 collection isnt that huge.
If your computer is not recognizing the device then it could be a driver issue with your motherboard. XP is pretty standard so I doubt the problem is there and it shouldnt be because of your usb port. I think its the motherbaord, but don't quote me on that!
Bear in mind that because you're using usb 1.1 the transfer speed is slower, so this is what I recommend:
Restart XP with the ipod disconnected. When XP has started and there is no more disk activity, plug the ipod into your usb port. Now, go away and leave it for about 10 minutes. This is because the first time you plug it in XP has to recognize it and install drivers for it (automatically), and this can take some time. When it is ready it will tell you it needs to reboot. Do what it says and when it restarts it should recognixze the ipod.
Just bear in mind that whenever you plug it in, it can take a few minutes to be recognized by the system, so leave it a while before you try to access it.
Hope this helps.

Hey kate kosche,
I have Win98 and I have the exact same problem. On a winXP computer it displays the same message as you, but on my comp. it just doesn't recognize it. Go to this (http://www.ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=22843#post22843) thread, maybe it'll help.
