Yellow exclamation, no drivers are installed for this device
Ive got a 10gb windows ipod and im running windows xp, my firewire card is working fine (it says in device manager). But when i look in device manager at my ipod it says in properties that there are no drivers installed for this device. I have installed everything off the cd, even crappy mmjb. What are the drivers called that are meant to be used by ipod? At the moment its running of these 2 drivers : disk.sys and partmgr.sys
In device manager its got the yellow exclamation mark of doom.
i think it could be my firewire card because it isnt whql, what one would people recommend getting for best compatability with ipod?
I tried uninstalling all of it and just using update.exe from desktop, this didnt work either.
Any help will be much appreciated. Thanx

Ignore the device manager, and try to transfer with your iPod anyway. If it doesn't work, get back to us.

This happened to me when using Win98se, and I got around it, see if this works for you. I'm not too aquainted with XP yet, but somewhere in Device Manager there should be a "remove" button or something like that. With the iPod disconnected and the firewire card selected, hit the "remove" button to just get rid of the firewire cards presence on your machine. Then restart and let the computer find the hardware, make sure to search for drivers from Windows Update Online and not on your computer (to make sure you get the latest). Finish the wizard and then plug in the iPod again, see if that works.
Hope that helps.

I did try to transfer but when using mmjb it would just give me the message mmjb is activating your portable devices, and freeze there. In ephpod it wont let me select ipod as a drive, its not displayed in the little list u get to choose from so i cant transfer that way either. Ill try the removal of my firewire card like night said, tomorrow. Thanx for the help ill report how things go

Oh yeah, also, just delete MMJB. I found it to also be a major part of my computer screwing up with the iPod. It just slows down the whole system as well. It really isn't good for anything anyways, there are better rippers, and there are tons of much better players out there.

There are no drivers other than what windows uses for external Hard Drives.
So, with that said, uninstalling through device manager your firewire card is a good thing to try.
If it still doesn't work, let us know what type of card you have. Have you ever sucessfully connected w/this card?
Also, uninstall the MMJB iPod plugin and MMJB for sure.

I did uninstall my firewire card twice and tryed that method, also uninstalled mmjb and the plugins. ive still got the yellow exclamation and it says there are no drivers installed for this device. Why does it say that? I cant see why it would give me and no one else that error because im only using same win xp as everyone else therefore our drivers should be the same. I looked at my firewire card in device manager and it says texas instruments, i think thats its make or chipset. What im gonna try next is moving the firewire card into a different PCI slot. I did have it working before yes and i did manage to transfer music BUT its ALWAYS been tempremental and ive never had a smooth time (this is my second ipod) i only ever connected either of my ipods a couple of times then just made do with the music i managed to transfer in those rare periods of working.
Any other ideas if the PCI slot movement doesnt work, any help will be much appreciated, Thanx for help so far

Maybe i should tell you what does happen when its connected: i ALWAYS get the "OK to disconnect" display , when i had the ipod plugin installed it would show the ipod as connected in my taskbar (the red X would dissapear revealing the ipod image) But i could never click the icon or go to ipod manager, it wouldnt let me. When i tryed to run the updater.exe which id put on my desktop as i uninstalled the windows stuff , it would display the box u get to update but it would just freeze and stay like that for about a minute then give me the error message "cant mount ipod". When i use ephpod i cant select my ipod as a drive, it doesnt appear in the list which u select on startup of that program. When i used MMJB before i uninstalled it, it would give me the "Activating portable devices" message then freeze up and not do anything then finally say cant find any devices.

Sounds to me like you have a card that is problematic w/the iPod.
Also, make sure you're up to date w/service packs w/XP. At least have service pack 1 as it fixed a couple of minor firewire issues.
But the fact that this is your second iPod leaves me to believe it's your firewire card, try the adaptec 4300 if you want the one that always works.
VIA chipset ones usually work fine as well.
