Will someone answer me?

I'm about to get a new gen3 iPod 10GB and have many concerns about how it will work with my computer. I have Windows98SE and I'm wondering if I download EphPod, will the program work well with the iPod even if I have Windows98SE? Also, I read the stuff about updating the iPod for Windows98, but does that apply for SE users? I've heard that the Second Edition works well with the iPod, but I don't know if that's true until I read a straight answer from someone. Do you still have to buy a Windows formatted iPod or do they work with both Mac and Windows now?

I have Win98se and have great luck with my iPod. However, I had to update and format it on an XP machine. The new iPods are both Mac and Windows. The first thing you have to do with it is format it though, and you can't do that on a Win98se machine if I am correct (I tried everything and it didn't work for me). So I went to a friend who has XP and brought my firewire card along and did it there. When I got back home though it still didn't work, I had to download the firewire patch for Win98se from microsoft (do a search on this forum, someone who responded to one of my posts linked it for me, but I don' t remember it). After that I went to device manager, deleted the firewire card, rebooted the computer, let it find the hardware, and then it all worked with ephpod. You can't use MMJB (oh darn).

Hope that helps.

You can do the format directly throught 98SE. Just check out this post (http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2970) for a nifty trick to get the updater program extracted from the 2.01 firmware. You can and should you the new 2.01 firmware, not what's on your CD. It's the old version.

Just extract that updater per the instructions in the thread above and run it. It will format your iPod from a MiPod to a WiPod and you'll be in business.

You can use either MC9, Xplay or ephpod to upload.

Oh, and here's the Windows 98SE Firewire Patch (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;242975). You'll need that before installing your firewire card.

Oh yeah, ashawley, I can't get that to work on my computer. I can install it, but I can't put it on the iPod. I keep getting an error that says "can't open iPod." I can sync with ephpod and everything, and it shows up as a drive, I even copied the update file onto the iPod and then ran it from there, and it didn't work. Yet, whenever I run the Updater the iPod's syncing icon shows up and then the error message pops-up. Have any ideas?

What type of firewire card are you using?

b_nightingale99:

Don't have much to offer you...if the Updater can't mount the iPod then possibly something else is accessing the drive. Turn off any anti-virus program you have before running it. Look in Task Manager for any program that could be accessing the iPod.

Sorry, that's all I can think of...

I doubt it is the firewire, because it has been working since day one. I have music on my iPod and sync it with ephpod about 3x a week. So, unless the Updater has to have a specific type of firewire card, it shouldn't be the problem. It is a Wise Land PCI card if it makes a difference.
