Please Help!
Ok I had my iPod for a couple of days now and I'm going crazy... I can't make it work! I've got EphPod and have an entire album in there ready to be trasfered to my iPod.
Here's what happens. I plug it in. the "don't disconnect" sign turns up and a window shows up saying this:
Unable to read the format of the ipod plugged in.
Then this:
This ipod needs to be reformatted for use on your PC. Click on the update button below to run the ipod updater application that will allow you to reformat or restore your ipod.
I click update and another windows asks me if I'm sure, I click restore.
Then some things happen for a second like files changing and I don't know what in that same window and this come up:
Can?t lock ipod. Please check of any other applications are using ipod and try again.
Over and over and over... :(
Edit: oh and in the ipod manager i can see the picture of the ipod where it says "choose your ipod" but the PC obviously does not recongnize it because there is no informatin on how much space I have and how much is left. It just says zero.

Hey
I had the same problem, don't worry there is hope!!
Is your iPod in the dock when you launch the updater app? If it is, take it out, then put it in when you are told that there is no iPod connected. Also make sure you have the latest version (2.0.1)...
Hope this works for you!

Hey ..
I have exactly the same problem.. except, I ran the updater, and it nuked my ipod completely :/
I got a replacement, but have them checking out whether or not my firewire has any issues .. its an onboard firewire port on the A7N8X Delux mobo, says its an 'OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller'
It picks it up as an ipod .. uses the proper drives etc .. when I have it in disk mode, it says it can't read the drive and asks if I want to format it ..
Gotta get onto them tommorrow see if what I have is ok .. else I gotta get the firewire/usb converter they offer .. or a new firewire card .. not sure which will work out cheapest ..
Guess usb would be better .. as alot of machines I use have usb and only my main machine has the firewire card .. might be handy as an external drive .. only problem is it wont charge while plugged into a usb port :/
ps. when I say the updater program nuked the ipod .. it got to 99% of the update, popped up a message 'unable to unmount ipod' and then the ipod wouldnt turn on or even reset .. it was a paperweight . .

I think i have the same troubles as you poor guys. I've had my ipod for 2 weeks, me and my family have been trying to figure it out for ages. When ever it is plugged into my comptuer it immediantly comes up with "unable to read format" and i have to reformat it, it never fails to pop up. But i think there's another problem as well, it takes 3 hours to format the #### thing. I've been told, working normally it would take a few minutes as most.
And after so many formats and so many explorations and updates and everything possible...now it wont even do anything. the comptuer thinks it's there...but the ipod doesn't. Everything in my comtpuer is compatible (it is said), am i dealing with a subtle hardware incompatibility? or is it software on my comtpuer? I'm stumped.

The reason things are working for you is that you've never formatted your iPod sucesfully to a WiPod. Since all new iPods come as MiPods windows couldn't recognize the HFS+ format of the drive. But, when you installed Xplay (with it's MacDrive technology included), your PC is now able to read the HFS+ drive.
So, you're using a MiPod--no big deal, but you won't be able to switch uploading programs.
All: when you run the Updater, don't do it from iPod Manager. Just go to Start>Programs>iPod>Updater (or it might say System Software 2.0.1). Then click on the Restore button (no Update).
If you get the "Unable to Unmount iPod" error, that's fine, just unmount it, and connect it to the AC adaptor to let it finish the restore process. A progress bar will come up on the iPod, should take 30-60 seconds.
Also: whenever you are running the updater make sure you have no other program running (especially ephpod or MMJB).
