Please Help ASAP!

Hey guys, I am new, but I have a huge question...I got an IPod (10g for Windows) and a firewire...I loaded the firewire in my computer...I have Windows ME (I know it sucks), and it didn't recognize it...I tried searching and nothing...called the company but I still got nowhere.

My friend also got an IPod this week, they have ME too, and it didn't work on their computer either. They told me they tried it on their laptop which has Windows XP, but it didn't work there either. They also told me that "most" Windows don't actual work with IPods, and only a select few do.

Can someone explain this to me and what I should do?

I have ME--you can get it to work. And your friend is way off base on his comment that most windows machines won't work with ipods--one look at the ipod sales figures for windows machines will quickly reveal that...:D

I think the first place you need to start is your firewire card. What brand did you get? Not all firewire cards work consistently, or even at all, with the ipod. Adaptec is probably recognized as "the best"...

I have a Belkin FireWire 3-Port PCI Card (F5U501-APL)...I put it in...I only had one driver available...there was another slot but there were wires across it, but yeah, I put it in and even re-put it in several times...turned on my computer...nothing...tried searching and nothing...waht do you suggest I do?

First of all, go into your control Panel, go into system, and go into devices to make sure it's (your firewire card) working properly.

If so, I'd recommend switching into the other slot and starting over. If not, I'd reinstall the driver and try again. If either of these don't work, Adam or Kurt will have some other ideas, but this is were I'd start...

WinMe is a nightmare man. I hate WinME. Definetly get off of it asap. If your computer can handle windows XP, either borrorow a cd from a friend, buy it, or even download it offline, it's everywhere these days.

Don't install XP or win2000pro over ME either...do a full format of your hardrive then install it. You don't want anypart of ME anywhere heh.

I am getting a new computer at the end of August/early September so it wouldn't make sense to buy a new operating system.

There is nothing for the firewire in the control panel so I don't know what to do...should I exchange this one and get a differnet firewire?

Ok, go into My Computer>Control Panel>System>Device Manager

See if there is a "1394 Bus Controller" in there--if so, click on it and see what it say...

If its not there, try reinstalling the driver. If that doesn't work, then try changing slots. If that doesn't work, exchange it for an Adaptec...But the Belkin should be recognized..

And agree with the sentiment about XP--I have taken a ton of abuse at the hands of Adam for still running ME, but you can get it to work. Try the above first and see what you come up with..

I see a Universal Bus Controller thing, but no 1394...it had two USB things.

What do you suggest I do next...I've reinstalled it several times...should I get another one from a differnet company?

Hoo Boy...I'd try switching slots first (hmm, another thought just went through my mind after I typed that, but it has nothing to do with computers, and could get me into alot of trouble..Nevermind, shouldn't have gone there), and then try reinstalling. And hopefully Adam (Clark Kent during the day, Adam at night) will come to the rescue...But it sounds like your computer for some reason isn't working well and playing nicely with the Belkin. It may be time to try the Adaptec...

Warning: Once Adam is involved in this mess, he is going to beat you with stick until you change to XP...I still haven't, and the beatings are beginning to cause severe dain bramage...

:beat, beat, slash, slash:

When are you getting onto XP? :D Oh, wait, saw your post that you're getting a new computer...

OK, we're reaching the limits of my knowledge as well mainly because I haven't played w/ME in so long. Let see, you've tried the Add New Hardware wizard and it doesn't find anything?

What shows up when you connect the iPod? Does it change at all? I mean on the screen of course.

Have you checked the manufacturer's web site for your card? Is there a new driver for it possibly?

Aside from that I'd try a different card if you can...

Thanks for the help guys, but no luck yet.

-I am getting, as you said, a new computer in Septemer so it wouldn't make sense to buy XP seperately.

-I don't have any more drives available

-I called the company to get help but it got me no where

-I've returned my FireWire Card, got a new one (same kind though), but nothing.

Should I try a diferent company, Adam?

Wait, I never got a response to my question of what shows up on the iPod when you connect it.

I'm sadly a little confused if your issue is that the firewire was not recognized automatically by Windows, of it you can't get the iPod to work...

My IPod is fine or at least I think and hope so...I can't really try it though until my firewire starts working...so what do you suggest I do?

# 13 Re: Please Help ASAP!
I'd try an adaptec firewire...Make sure it's recognized by your computer--sounds like your previous one didn't install, for whatever reason (Belkin is a good firewire card, this is somewhat of a longshot, but worth trying)..Make sure you install it like Adam outlined in his previous post.

If ur firewire isnt detecting in device manager check that there are no devices with little yellow exclamation marks next to them. Also check that there are no items in the 'other devices' section. If there are, right click on them and try to install proper drivers. Just go with 'select best driver' if your fw card didnt come with a drivers disk. Had a look on the net for you but there are no driver updates for ur product.

a new firewire card might be in order... :/

Also if you are thinking of upgrading I would recommend win2k. It is a lot less system-intensive than Xp. plus win2k has been highly successfull when it comes to the iPod...

Hope you solve ur problem soon...
