Backing up mp3s
I want to backup my mp3's onto DVD.
I used windows to right click on my music and hit sent to E:(my burner). It writes the temp files, but it wont write to a DVD, it says it will only write to cd.( It is a DVD burner)
Next, I tried RecordNow DX.The problem is that some of them have file names longer than 110 characters and I get error messages that the names are too long and it can not write the files.
I also tried MMJB and it asks if I want to have it change the names(to shorten them) and I select OK but the burn still fails. I selected dvd 4.7g and data disk as options. I sent a report to MMJB but have heard nothing yet.
Windows XP sp1
Sony vaio
P4 2.0
What is the best way to backup mp3's?
Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

i also archive my mp3s in zip files.
i zip each of the albums in it's folder, so if i end up renaming the zip archive during burning it doesn't really matter.
it's just a matter of unzipping all the archives from the cd (i'm not quite in the dvd burner price range just yet) into a dir on my computer, and it retains the directories.
i'd highly reccomend zipping also. but keep in mind, there's no use in using any compression when you're zipping. if you set it to "store", it will pack them in zip's, but with zero compression. mp3's are highly compressed files already, so you won't gain anything from compressing them any further. it'll just take longer to do with compression. by just packing them it'll take seconds as opposed to minutes.

Thanks for your help especially about the 'store' feature that does not compress the files. I didn't want to back up my mp3's in a zip folder if it was going to change(degrade) them. That would defeat the whole purpose.
Can I use the free download from winzip.com or do I need to pay the $29 for the full program?

the free one will do.
and about degrading the files, don't worry. it doesn't change the file in the sense that you might think. it just puts them in a smaller container.
go nuts, your mp3s will be fine.
