I'm sorry, can you be a little more specific about what your problem is? Version 1.1 of what? All Firewire disk mode does is allow windows to display the iPod as a disk drive in My Computer so you can copy files to it and what not.
If you mean how do you remove your iPod safely from the dock, just click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in your systray. It looks like this:

When I first got my iPod, it took me a day or so to see how to disconnect my iPod.

i think you may want to have a look at this thread

you need to format your ipod to work with windows before you start using it normally. that link will help you out with that.
[edit]
can you access the ipod at all, even as a harddisk?

No! I cannot. They say the firewire card is plug n play but I cannot even find it in devicemanager... They have no install files or drivers available...

If you are trying to find a firewire card in device manager it should appear as 'IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controller' or something similar. I dont know where 'apple' came from.
have you tried searching the net for the relevant drivers?
What card are you using?

I finally managed to fix the problem with my iPod. A recommendation to you out there whose XP cannot recognize the firewire-card or ipod, press the firewire card harder (i did this and it works). You shouldnt be able to see any "golden" on the card...
