##@!@#$#@ Freezing

Has anyone had problems with their computer freezing when loading music to their Ipod? Randomly, about every 20 to 40 songs or so, my entire computer will lock up solid when I transfer music to the Ipod to the point that I have to physically power down the computer and restart. Its not any particular mp3 that causes the problem, as I can load the same track the next time without any issues. I have this problem no matter what synching program I use, I've run into it in MusicMatch, Xplay and Ephpod.

I'm running Windows XP and have a 2nd generation 20 gig Ipod with the 1.2.6 firmware. I've tried disabling my antivirus program, using a new firewire cable (by the way, my transfer speeds increased dramatically with the XtremeMac gold cable), as using different syching programs.

Its been extremey frustrating, yesterday I deciding to level all my mp3s (some 1200 of them) with mp3gain and reload the machine. The reloading, which should have taken half an hour or so, took all day, with the constant restarting the computer.

Heh, I've rarely experienced freezing with XP, it's great. Maybe you've got some spyware or summat slowing down your system when you're transferring using firewire.

More likely it's due to your firewire card. What kind to you have?

Oh and what speeds are you getting w/the new cable btw?

My fear, of course, is that it is the card i don't remember the brand, its the one that best buy pushes. I let you know once I pull it.

Using the old Apple cable, top transfer speeds were in the high 4 to low 5 mb/sec range using Ephpod. With the new cable I am consistantly in the middle to high 6's. It also seems less prone to dropping into slower transfer speeds than the Apple cable, did but htat may just be me being overly optimistic.
