Crashes Windows

Im running Windows XP Home edition and Currently the last working software i was using with the ipod was ephpod. I think that matchmaker Jukebox is a pile of crap ( pardon my french  )

The system is an Athlon XP 1800+ with 512DDR and plenty of HDD space. Im using the firewire connector for the ipod ( didnt get the USB 2 one ) and that connects to a firewire port on my Hercules Sound card.

I had problems transfering music to the ipod right from the word go. It seems to be a very tempramental piece of equipment and appears to crash the system at times without warning. Whenever i want to transfer music to the ipod i close all programs and non essential services via the task manager. At the moment i have about 250 songs on the (should have mentioned this earlier i guess) iPod Version 2 15Gb one..

I uninstalled that stupid ipod updater thingy from apple because like the music jukebox when it tried to format the ipod it only ended up stalling at crashing my system. I was lucky enough to get the music on the ipod when i did and i must say that ephpod seems to work a treat but still seems to crash (though i dont think its a flaw with the ephpod since the ipod will often lead to my computer spontaneously restarting just if i plug it into my computer and boot it up!! Whats all that about!?! :(

I tried downloading the ipod installer update thingy (when i was using it at the time) but it really didnt seem to patch any kinds of bugs that might be causing my system to crash so as i said before at the moment the only thing installed is the ephpod software and at the moment i cant seem to get that to work. It says that the ipod doesnt have the correct directory structure (which is utter nonsense because it does since ephpod was the software i used to create it) and if i try to browse the ipod dirs from windows explorer computer locks up/and or reboots.

Basically people.. im at this point now where i want to just crush the bloody thing :/ I payed a lot for the device and the shops in the UK seem to all have this no-refund policy now unless the device actually completely stops operating (in which case they recognise it as a warranty issue)

So to summarise. Does anyone know A) what could be causing the crashing? B) why i was able to get the music on before without it crashing and though i have changed absolutely nothing on the system since then now when i try to move music onto it ephpod complains that the directory structure is wrong :/

If anyone can help me i swear with god as my witness i will be your friend/slave for life :D

Hehe :) Ok well if anyone has any ideas then do please lemmie know (Remember sometimes it works sometimes its just plain stupid but at the moment it isnt working..)

Thanks again

Alex

One problem may be the firewire/soundcard combo...
If you have the moolah then cough up for a new firewire card as this may help.

This may only be a myth but as ur card is also a sound card, put it in the bottom PCI slot. This maximises its distance from other devices, and if nothing else it may improve sound quality :)

Also...

Booting with the iPod plugged in is almost asking for a blue screening.

Windows doenst like having another harddrive in so it stalls to protect your system. Its stupid i know.

Ditch Music Match. Its a crappy piece of software that just causes grief, it may work well for some but i have had nothin but bad experiences with it! (Try Ephpod (free :)) or Media Centre 9 (itll cost ya))

Hope that helps!

Thanks a lot for your thoughts man.. i really appreciate you replying. Since i have posted i have actually had time to look around and a lot of people are definitely saying that combo firewire controllers cause the problem. I know a reasonable amount about hardware but never realised a problem like that could be a result of the fact that the IEEE connectors were on the sound card :)

As far as coughing up cash goes, well summer is here and i will be working after while i wait for my exams results :P I will probably get a card soon, i just hope that fixes the problems because they arnt cheatp :/

Regarding software, yep i uninstalled musicmatch day one :P and immediately looked on google for other proggies where i found ephpod, just that ephpod often crashes or doesnt finish synchoronising and does other weird things i wont go into here but maybe all linked to that card issue init :P

Thanks for the tip about moving soundcard, sadly i cant because the optical cable i have connecting to my hifi just wont reach any further, i had to move the card up in the computer so it would connect! lol.

Anyway thanks again. Peace bro. ;)

For your firewire card issue: VIA chipsets and Adaptec FireConnects have been proven to work the best. The Adaptec is the priciest at ~USD$40. Personally my Ti chipset works fine. You can search eBay for deals.
