Windows XP Crashes
I bought a 3G iPod 30GB and installed a SIIG combo PCI firewire and USB 2.0 card. Everything was fine until MusicMatch would not install. Now the iPod connection to the firewire card makes the PC crash before Windows boots. Windows boots fine without the iPod connected, but crashes when the iPod is connected. I have uninstalled the iPod and MusicMatch programs and reinstalled the combo card, but with no success. Any help would be appreciated because I want to give the iPod a try, rather than returning it.

Yes, this problem is common. Apparently it is not recommended that you boot your computer witht the iPod connected, as windows can try to boot of it (being a hardrive). I dont know about the music match poblem is though, i suggest just going with ephpod!
Hope that helps,

Thank you for the replies, which were very helpful. Do you mean FORMAT the PC hard drive and reinstall Windows?
# 4 Re: Windows XP Crashes
Have you ever connected before? Usually a crash on connection means that the PCI card is in a non bus powered PCI slot. Usually moving the PCI card to another slot (like the second one) will fix this.
Windows will crash to prevent damage to your computer.

Tried all of the suggestions, but still no luck. Planning to reinstall XP clean.
# 6 Re: Windows XP Crashes
I tried everything recommended, placed the PCI card in different slots, removed all other PCI cards, updated all drivers, disconnected power from all other peripherals, etc. I also did a clean install of Windows XP. Unfortunately, the PC crashes everytime the iPod is placed in the cradle. Looks like I will have to return the iPod and get a Zen.
# 7 Re: Windows XP Crashes
Just short of buying the Zen, I decided to try the USB 2.0 cable. It works great.
I returned the Firewire PCI card and installed a CompUSA USB 2.0 card (cheap), updated the software to 2.0.1 and everything works great.
Thanks to this forum, I was able to read that some PC's just do not like certain firewire cards, so I decided to try USB. My iPod for Windows experience is so different with USB -- much better.

the most likely cause of your issues was a voltage drop on the PCI bus. Many firewire cards don't come with a 4-pin power supply connector, thus, they get all their juice from the PCI bus. the act of connecting a power-sucking device (like the iPod) to your firewire card can cause a voltage drop that your motherboard is not prepared for. this voltage drop destabilizes the system and windows blue screens or spontaneously reboots. same thing happened to me when I first got an ipod and I was using an iogear combo usb 2.0 + firewire card.

Thanks for the info. I had a 4 pin power connector attached from the power supply. But, it does appear like there was some kind of power problem as you explained.
# 10 Re: Windows XP Crashes
So is there a solution on this? My does the exact same thing. 30G Ipod, SIIG USB 2.0 + Firewire Combo Card, WinXP, and my computer reboots everytime I connect the Ipod. I have connected the 4 pin power supply onto the card but it has made little difference. Do I need a stronger power supply?
AMG: How did you get around this problem?
Please help! TIA.
# 11 Re: Windows XP Crashes
I returned the combo card and installed a USB 2.0 card from CompUSA ($20) with the USB cable from Apple ($20). The iPod works great with USB 2.0. Good luck.
