Cant update software to 2.0.1

I just got my beautiful new 30gb iPod. Can't wait to start filling it up with tunes...

I've just downloaded the 2.0.1 updater for Windows and tried installing with no luck. The setup program runs fine and does it stuff but afterwards theirs no sign of 2.0.1 updater having been installed.

My iPod still says that it has version 2.0 software installed and the updater programs update button remains grayed out.

Am I missing something here? Has anyone else had this problem?

Its a bit annoying as it sounds like the update is worth installing.

I'm running Win XP Pro patched to the eyeballs.

After you run the setup that you downloaded from Apple's website, I believe there's another setup file that you actually need to run to UPDATE your iPod. The first setup just unpacked what was in that initial exe file. See if that makes sense to you eh?

I did think that might be the case and searched high and low for anything that look like the updater without any joy.

When I run the installer it looks as though its all running smoothly and at the end a message pops up saying its running the updater setup, then nothing happens, no error, nothing.

I've managed to get the update installed by following instructions from the iPod 2.0.1 updater for win98 users thread.

Thanks

The updater gets installed into C:\program files\iPod\Updater_2.0.1. Just run that program and click "update"

I'm having the exact same problem that Sean was having. I installed the updater and it only gave me the choice of a restore instead of an update.

I have two brand new 3G 15GB Ipods, and I'm running WinXP Pro also patched to the nines.

I went to the Win98 sticky thread and followed the instructions there, but I did not have the temp file that would allow me to update my Ipod. I went to the folder and so on, that you recommended, Adam, but that didn't work either. I've tried launching the updater from different locations, so on and so forth, but I cannot get the software to run a firmware update. The firmware version on both Ipods is 2.0. I'd like to update them to 2.0.1, but I can't seem to.

Can anyone give me a hand here? I'd really appreciate it.

I managed to find the updater setup file by doing a search after starting the setup.exe, while its on the installer welcome screen. I think I searched for iPod?

The file you are after is called iPod-for-win-updater-instlr.exe .

Let me know if you have a luck.

Thanks, Sean, for getting back to me. But I just figured it out. For anyone else having trouble with this type of thing, here's what I did...

First of all, I made a stupid mistake by simply overlooking an obvious step. Well, it wasn't so obvious to me at first. But I didn't install the CD that came with the Ipod. DUH! The reason I didn't do this is because the manual said that all the CD was going to install was the manual itself and MusicMatch Jukebox. This isn't entirely true. It installs those things, but it also formats the Ipod for Windows. I didn't know this because the manual didn't state this, but another user on these forums said that the Ipod comes formatted for Mac by default and not for Windows, so the CD needs to be installed in order to configure the Ipod for Windows. Geesh. I'm glad I got past this. Duh indeed.

Anyway, once I did this (and opted not to install MusicMatch JB because I had already downloaded and installed Music Center, which is a very cool program, btw), the option to update the firmware was made available to me. The Ipod updated to 2.0.1 without a hitch.

That's all it took. Simple, once I got my head out of my butt, LOL.

Once the firmware was updated, I reconnected my Ipod back up to my laptop, launched Music Center, it was recognized, and I formatted the Ipod for Music Center, which took about ten seconds. Then I just uploaded my music to my Ipod, and that was it! Simple. Music sounds great, with no cutoffs. And I couldn't be happier :) Later, I'll tackle the Smartlists and figure out how to make use of those. Yippee!

Now I just need to figure out how to get the same computer to handle a second Ipod...

I have the same problem as this and I did the original install from the CD. Any ideas why it doesn't work? I'm running Win XP.

I would just reformat my ipod (30gig) but it getting the tunes back on is a right pain because I have an unpowered firewire connection and it can't get my 16gig of songs across in one session so I have to split my mp3s into manageable chunks and recharge the ipod after each batch.

I really need to get a powered firewire card for my laptop, is there one available?

managed to sort the updating problem, it was nothing to do with the updater, a network drive had mapped itself on to F:, my ipod drive, un-mapped the network drive and hey presto, the updater worked!
