Should I get one?

OK, not entirely sure if this is the correct forum but it's not a problem as such as I don't yet own an ipod.

Here's the deal though, I really fancy getting one of these devices but I'm well confused about what I'm reading regarding them.

First up, I'm running Windows 98se although I realise the ipod specs give a minimum OS of Windows ME. However after searching these forums I see folks happily & not so happily running there ipods off 98se after purhasing a firewire card & updating patch etc..

I have also seen people advised to find a pc with ME or higher and set up their ipod on it,then take it from there on their own 98se machine.

Upgrading my OS isn't really worth my while as I'd rather put the money towards a new pc that I'll hopefully get later in the year. I also don't know one other person who is running anything higher than 98.

The bottom line is, is there anyway to run a 3rd gen ipod from the box using any 3rd party software (xplay, ephod, patches etc..) to configure the ipod to windows 98se?

Any help would be appreciated.

yes, of course there is, but you'll have to forgo any of apple's supplied software, and root around for third party applications.

basically i'm running a win98se machine with a sound blaster audigy, i plug the ipod into the firewire port on the audigy and it's mounted as a removable firewire hard disk drive. (it shows up as another removable disk drive in My Computer)

then i use ephpod (http://www.ephpod.com/) which asks me to specify the drive letter which my ipod is mounted as, following which it does all the dirty work after i've specified which directories my music is in and use the synchronisation function to transfer files to my ipod

i've owned a 10 gig gen 2 ipod and currently have a 15 gig gen3, and both have worked flawlessly with ephpod. not very sure about xplay though.

well basically you shouldn't have to worry about win98se not being compatible with an ipod, although if there are any software problems you've to be prepared to rough it out without any assistance from apple

there's always the friendly folk on the ipodlounge forums who will help you out...

oh yes, if you're going to buy a v3(dock connector) ipod, do remember that it comes out of the box formatted as a mac ipod, so to use it you either have to use macopener(see the ephpod page) to synchronise it or to manually convert it into a win ipod so it can be read directly by windows.

do see my previous post:
