Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Well it seems that there's no way for us v3 ipod owners who are Win98 users to update our firmware without running Apple's programme, which only supports WinMe and above, but after experimenting around with the installer, i found something very interesting that allowed me to do so :)
here's what i did:
1) run apple's installer programme(setup.exe), it will load till the "welcome screen" where it says "Welcome to the Installshield Wizard for iPod For Windows download installer".
2) usually, win98 users are screwed because when you click "next" it says "This Version of Operating System is not supported" which results in much cursing at the screen and the setup programme closing
3) well, when you reach the "Welcome screen", DON'T click "next" first. go open up a "find files or folders" from the start menu and search for "updater" in your windows directory: you should see the below file appear: "iPod-for-win-updater-instlr.exe". it should be in one of the temp folders in your windows directory
4) run the program! it'll install the ipod firmware updater, which *does* work in win98... and bob's your uncle!
remember, the file only appears when the apple installer programme is running! once you close the setup.exe the file is automatically deleted from the temp directory, thus i would recommend copying it to a safe place before running it.
hope this helps all my fellow win98 users :)

ibons,
Your batting two for two now! Thanks for helping us windows 98 users out. I will add to your post.
After you install the updater, you might not notice that it actually installed. After it runs it's course, the setup might just close all by itself and you'd think that you just installed 2.01 onto your iPod. However, it gets installed on to your computer. If the setup didn't ask, or tell you where the updater got installed, go to Start -> Find -> Files or Folders. Search for updater.exe.
If you have multiple drives like I do, search each one till you find it. For example, I found updater.exe in my "E" drive. (I have A - H hard drives). Once you find it, double click on the icon (make sure the ipod is connected to your computer of course) and the install will begin. It takes a few minutes. I also had to get my win98 CD to install something. When this happened, the ipod disconnected itself from my computer (which freaked me out because it was halfway through the install). I just put the win98 cd in and clicked "ok" and the the ipod reconnected itself and the install went through.
The Play list upgrade is oh so great! No more clicking in between songs!
Thanks again ibons :D
# 2 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
First of all, THANKS! It is great that you figured this out. However, I still can't get it to work. Everytime I run it an error message comes up saying 1155 File Not Found: (and then a bunch of random letters/numbers which is a folder in the Temp folder, however it doesn't show which file it cant find because the folder name is so #### long). Anyone got any suggestions?
# 3 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
glad i could help :)
yep, to confirm ipeddler's post, when you run the "iPod-for-win-updater-instlr.exe" file, the firmware is not installed yet. instead, another installshield programme should pop up and install some files. this programme will run and close by itself,
when it's done, you can plug your ipod in, wait for it to mount as a drive,
then run the updater from under Start-->Programs-->iPod-->system software 2.01-->updater. It will then allow you to either update or restore your ipod to firmware v. 2.01 depending on what you want to do.
since it actually creates a programme group you don't need to search your hard drives, but if it somehow doesn't appear then ipeddler's method's the best.
i didn't have to insert my win98 cd during the update process.. but i guess that's a case by case basis.
well again, a picture says a thousand words ;)

i would venture that you closed the apple installer before running the updater program.. my advise would be to copy the "iPod-for-win-updater-instlr.exe" file into another folder (perhaps your deskop?) *before* closing apple's installer programme as that would automatically remove the file even though it may have showed up in your "find" dialog box.
remember, don't click "next" when you see the "Welcome to the Installshield Wizard for iPod For Windows download installer" window, until you have copied the "iPod-for-win-updater-instlr.exe" file to another directory or it will scream "This Version of Operating System is not supported" at you and close down by itself.
then, you can run the updater-instlr.exe file from whatever directory you copied it to.
hope this works ;)

Alright, I thought I had fixed it by reinstalling my firewire port and keeping the iPod unplugged. The software installed and showed up in the programs menu, but when I ran it with the iPod plugged in and saying "do not disconnect" I got an error message saying "can't open iPod" GRRRRRR.... Any suggestions (please don't tell me I have to install MMJB again!)

iBons and iPeddler,
Outstanding work. Where there's a will, there's a way, and I'm very glad that you two have done such a stand-up job on this. Windows 98 users everywhere thank you.
I'll make this sticky for the time being, if it's all right with y'all.

I got a quick question:
With the usb cable costing $19.00, why not chip in another $10 - $15 and get a firewire card? Plus you get to charge the ipod that way.
But back to your question:
So when you plug your ipod into the connector and then the usb end into the computer, is your ipod mounting? Meaning is it registring as a another harddrive?
If yes, what software are you using to transfer songs?

There is a number of reasons for using usb ...
1) Its my father ipod and he doesn't have a firewire card and only has one pc slot of his laptop which he's using for a network connection and there is usb built into the pc.
2) Also I would like to use the usb cable on my ipod so I can carry it around with me so when I visit friends I don't have to worry if they have firewire cards (very hard to find a pc without usb these days)
Oh also I don't believe the ipod charges from most pcimcia cards on laptops.
As for if I get a drive letter ... I do not just get a ipod usb device in the device manager which can't find a driver.
Is anyone have the ipod installed on usb in Windows ME? maybe they can let me know the driver files its using.

On the side, the USB cable will work for charging, if you can dig it.
It's a three-ended cable... one end for the iPod, one end for your USB port, and one end goes to your AC adapter. If you leave the cable plugged into the USB and the AC at all times, then when you plug into your iPod, it will charge.
It won't charge without the AC adapter connection, tho.

well it actually doesn't matter where the firewire port is located, because as long as it is the "large" 6 pin type it should be powered and thus able to charge the ipod. it's only the "mini" 4 pin type that isn't powered and thus can't charge, presumably because it's too small to squeeze in two extra pins for power (neutral and live, i'd venture).
as to the usb2 support for ipod in win98se, i've a feeling it'd be pretty tricky as that would involve somehow pulling the ipod usb2 driver out of the setup.exe package and i'm not sure if the installer would give up the driver if you don't run it to the end. however, there's a good chance that it would be compatible as win98 and winme are technically very similar. in fact, it escapes me utterly as to how apple can refuse win98 support when it's still the second most popular version of windows...
perhaps you can ask a friend who has a compatible version of windows to run the setup.exe programme for you to completion, then root around and search for any *.vxd, *.ini or such driver files which might be the usb2 driver and allow the ipod to mount as a removable drive. i don't have the usb2 cable so i'm afraid i can't experiment for this case.

Since its a laptop, it more than likely won't charge. The pcimcia cards either 1) don't allow it or 2) its not setup to because they don't want power being sucked out of the batteries. Even when its plugged into an outlet it still won't happen. I don't know the exact technical reasons why, but I've heard many people say it won't work when using a Windows laptop.
As for the USB driver, beats me. Sorry.

hmm i was expecting only the pcimcia cards with the 4 pin connectors not to charge and those with 6 pin connectors to do so. i'm planning to buy a notebook soon with a 6pin firewire port or a 6 pin pcimcia card for use with my ipod so that's rather disappointing news..
that'd mean i'd have to keep plugging my cable in and out of the laptop and charger alternately.. darn, well i guess it can't be helped.

Well you could just buy a new PowerBook (hopefully with the 970 in it) on monday. Rumor has it Apple puts those firewire thing-a-ma-gigs in all their computers. And I do know they charge the ipod when plugged in the wall. :)

hehe i like apple's design and ease of use, but i'm afraid all my fave progs run on the windoze platform... and it'd be quite weird to run my stuff on an emulator. an ipod's gonna be my only apple product for the time being.

I heard that Apple will be putting the IBM 970 processor in the powerbooks soon. If you have that setup and VirtualPC on OSX, you'll have windows be faster on the mac then it is on your new pc laptop. Only kidding of course, but won't that be something.
I'm getting the new powerbook when the 15" gets upgraded soon. All the programs I use on windows are available for OSX except MS Access. I'm getting VirtualPC for that so no biggie for me.
In a month or so, I won't be visiting the win 98 threads anymore. Well maybe I'll stop in and say hi.
sep - glad you got your stuff working too. Bugs me that Apple doesn't support win 98. We obviously got it to work pretty easily. Oh well.
# 19 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
I have Win98SE installed on my computer and I'm trying to use USB 1.1 just as the manual says it's compatible. I tried running the Apple programme (setup.exe) but I don't get a message to click "next" like other people are. It's going right through the Installshield and prompting me with a picture of the iPod with options to "Install" or "Exit." I've tried searching for the updater file trying to install it multiple ways but I can't ever find the Updater file everyone's talking about.

Hmm, what happens when you try to click on "install"?
Does it allow you to continue on or boot you out, saying your OS is not supported? If so, when you reach the abovementioned screen, do a search on updater in your windows directory and see what happens. Remember to check the correct directory for the file.
It should not matter what interface you are using with your ipod because the updater seems to do the job as long as it has detected the ipod mounted as a removable hard drive.
ibons at 2007-11-15 17:25:55 >

# 21 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Yes, if I do click "Install" then it boots me out of the installation saing my "OS is not supported." I have tried searching for the updater file while at that screen. Actually, the first thing it prompts me for when I click on setup.exe is the language selection. I've searched for the updater at that stage, during the Installshield process and then when it prompts me with the "Install" or "Exit" commands
# 22 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
I managed to install both the original V2 and the 2.0.1 updater with a similar approach. It looks like its only the top-level installer (setup.exe) which is incompatible with win98.
i) V2 (installing a new iPOD) On the iPOD distribution CD search for 'updater' - there is an Exe and the iPOD manager in a BIN directory - works fine under Win98 whereas the Setup.exe doesn't.
ii) As an alternative - if you can run either the original setup or the 2.0.1 updater on another PC which is ME/2000/XP etc but without the iPOD connected - a new iPOD directory is created with the necessary files for the update unpacked. These can then be copied and run on a win98 pc without any problem.
I also experience many of the common problems described in the forum:
* Long delays in responding to buttons when the iPOD was first loading a file to play.
* Skipping to the 2nd or 3rd track in a directory before beginning playing.
* Generally slow browsing response.
These were all cleared by making sure that the music files are distributed between a number of the sub directories F0-F19 on the iPOD - Ephpod is configured to put them all in F) to start, you need to change the options to support F) to F19 and reload your music onto the iPOD.

# 23 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Wow, thanks a lot. I finally did get it to work. Thanks for the advice about distributing the files evenly too.
# 24 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Right, so that we're all crystal clear on this, even us iPod n00bs:
Running the updater file on Win98SE in the manner described by ibons will not only update the firmware on a Windows-formatted iPod but also convert a factory-fresh Mac-formatted iPod to Windows.
The reason I ask is that you say that "the updater seems to do the job as long as it has detected the ipod mounted as a removable hard drive". I'm displaying my ignorance but surely the OS will only mount the iPod when its been reconfigured for Windows? Or have I misunderstood?
Anyway, thanks a lot for this excellent tip which has saved me yet again from an upgrade to XP (*makes sign of cross*).
# 25 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
mintcake,
Correct. Everything you said will do the job. And yes, a mac formatted ipod will show up as a mounted drive on your win98 computer. So run the updater and install 2.01 onto ipod. It will format your ipod for windows. The go play some music.
# 26 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Thanks for the confirmation ipeddler :)
I notice that 'setup.exe' writes two executable files to the TEMP folder: 'ipod-for-win-updater-instalr.exe' and 'ipod-for-win-core-instalr.exe'
What does the second one do?

Means your ipod isn't mounted on your computer. If it was, there would be a small icon in the bottom right of your screen (right next to the clock) that has a little grey box looking thing with a green arrow). If you don't have that then your ipod is not hooked to your computer.
Do you have that icon showing? Also, your ipod would display, "Do Not Disconnect" on the screen. Tell us if thats happening.

# 43 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Kottbullar,
Go back to the first posts in this thread and follow the directions exactly as stated. Clicking the install button on the picture to posted takes you to far. Just go back to the beginning of this thread and follow the instructions from ibon and myself.
# 44 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Just for the record, having now installed both a 2G and a 3G ipod under Windows 98SE, the firmware 1.3 updater for 2G will install under Win98 no problem, the firmware 2.01 updater for 3G will not, but if you follow the steps outlined on this thread you'll be fine.
# 45 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Sorry - I should have been more clear.
The steps the installer takes do not follow what ibons outlines - the first prompt is the one in the graphic above.
I did a search at that stage for 'updater' - 'ipod' etc. and there are no files/applications on my local drives that fit the bill.
I also found neil's comment about searching the cd and did so. I opened updater.exe and got the dialog below - with the alert box about 90 seconds in.
Still no iPod under Programs ...,..
Windows has recognized my removable drive ...
I do have a small icon in the bottom right of your screen (right next to the clock) that has a little grey box looking thing with a green arrow). I think that means it is mounted. My iPod is showing "Do Not Disconnect" on the screen.
Is this because I am using a Gen3 iPod and don't have Windows ME or higher?
(see the pic below for the updater results ...)
Hmm any other ideas?
# 46 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Kottbullar,
I'm not 100% sure but, I think your going to far. The screen image you posted is after you click past the intial setup screen you get when you pop in the CD. Try this: put cd in tray, let it autorun, and wait for the first screen to appear. It should be a installer window, not the window you have posted. Then do your search for "updater" on the c: drive. It's definitely there because I've done this on three different ipods/win 98 systems.
When you find it, copy it to your desktop (not the icon but the actual file). Then eject the CD and double click on the icon you made on the desktop. That installs the stuff onto your computer and then you'll be able to download the 2.01 version. If this doesn't help, I'm not sure what to tell you.
# 47 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Kottbullar:
I'm a little confused as you reference images but they aren't there.
From the sounds of it, you've been able to get the Updater.exe file off of the CD and you've been able to run that.
When you run it w/the iPod connected you should be able to click on the "Restore" button. It will then go through formatting, at about 90% it will stop (or so it appears) and then umount the iPod (or try to). If you get an error message here that says "Can't Unmount iPod", just pull it out of the dock. Now, to finish the process, the iPod needs external power (i.e. not from the battery). Does your connection to your PC provide power to the iPod? If not, re-connect your iPod not to the PC, but to the AC adaptor. You should eventually see a progress bar appear on the iPod. Once that's done, the iPod will restart and show you the screen where you select your language.
Let us know how it goes...
Adam

i'm glad to know you've got 'er done on other win98 systems - lets try to make it 4 !!
ashawley: i can find the updater file on the CD - but the screen I get (see image) stops me from going any further.
I've only got 8 days left on MacOpener before I have to pay. i hope I can work my way through it before then ...... grin

The reason? I MISSED an early point to uninstall or diable MacOpener!
Many thanks Ashawley and ipeddler for their patience. The lesson is that if you get the screen above, you need to disable or uninstall MacOpener/MacDrive etc. - and then follow the directions surrounding ipod_control etc.

Yes, macopener just isn't needed anymore. That was for the days before there was even such a thing as a WiPod. It was back in the day when Apple only had MiPod firmware so we couldn't format our iPods in FAT32 format. They had to be HFS+ so it was needed.
Not anymore. There's no need for it at all. And in my experience, it just causes problems.

# 53 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
I tried the process explained about how to get the iPod to work on Wondows 98 se, but I can not find the updater file described. How do I go about getting that file?
# 54 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Alright, I got the updater software installed... but now the system isn't recognizing the iPod. It's a 3g 20GB and I'm trying to use a USB cable. When I plug the cable into the computer, the computer attempts to search for the "device driver" for "iPod USB Interface", so I know that the computer is recognizing the iPod, just not the program... help please?
Thank you very much... I've got step one down.
PS The buttons "Update" and "Restore" are grayed out. Also, it's the iPod Software 2.0.1 Updater V2... that IS the correct one, right? By the way, just a piece of advice to others, my problem before was that I was trying to use the updater that came with the CD, when in reality all I had to do was use the one that you download off of the internet, and the file finally came up!
# 55 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Hey thanks for the instructions, Windows 98se can now see my Ipod (2nd generation) and the updater is also installed. But my question is how do I get MusicMatch (7.50) to install Ipod Plugin? I can now update my firmware from 98se but can't do anything else.
Later.....
Okay I can't load songs using MM but I was able to copy songs from and to Ipod using Windows Explorer.
Thanks
# 56 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
I have done all of the steps above. I have even got to install successfully the Updater to my computer. But when I click the Updater.exe file, it says that it "Can't open iPod." I have no MacOpener, and my iPod is fully charged. Also, my computer seems to recognize the iPod as a Removable Disk. When I clicked on the icon, it asked me if I wanted to format the Disk, but I just clicked "No." Is this significant in any ways?
Another note, my iPod is forever on the "Do Not Disconnect" mode. And there is the icon on the system tray with the green arrow on it.
What could be the problem now? My iPod is a new 20 GB, on Windows 98 SE, and with Belkin FireWire 3-Port PCI Card.

# 57 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Miburo:
can you browse the ipod through explorer and see the 'ipod_control' directory? If so, you are sooooooo close.
Follow Ashawley's previous info on what to do next.
Let us know if you get there ....
# 58 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
I ran the updater from the CD. I can run update from my start menu but only restore is an option. Update is greyed out. I restore, but then I am stuck.
My computer recognizes the IPOD as a removable drive. I can copy songs to it like it is a hard drive. No songs show on the IPOD though. I have the arrow in the tray on my PC and the IPOD flashes do not disconnect. How do I actually get the IPOD manager to work? How can I transfer songs? I am obviously missing something.
Please help. I already had a monster problem when I tried to install Win XP. That is no longer an option.
Update: I installed Ephod and can move my Outlook contacts with it, but when I try to add a song it says "destination invalid."
Please help me!

# 59 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Man, I gave up. When I checked on my iPod again, it was on the permanent "OK to Disconnect" mode. And when I tried to reset it, it had the Apple Logo, and then a picture of a folder with an exclamation mark next to it. When I put the iPod on the dock, it went to the "Do Not Disconnect Mode," and the Updater still said that it "Can't open iPod." Blarg.
So what I ended up doing was I went to this main Apple Store in my city. After I told the tech people there that the Updater hadn't worked for my iPod, and since my iPod is for PC, they said that would not be able to fix it for me because they didn't have any PCs to help me with my problems. I would have to call the customer support and ask for help from there, with the possibility of having to send my iPod to their customer center. OR, they said, they could format my iPod into a Mac iPod. So that's what I did, I now have a Mac iPod. Would it still be possible to run it on Windows now, by maybe using XPlay or Ephpod?
Again, iPod is a 20 GB, on Windows 98 SE, and with Belkin FireWire 3-Port PCI Card.

# 60 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
I just gave up and upgraded to Windows XP and it works fine now.
# 61 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
So this is what I did. Tried XPlay, and it didn't go very well. Then I uninstalled it, restarted my computer, and installed Ephpod with its MacOpener. I Macformatted my iPod, and then transferred several music files to my iPod.
Now, the music files are THERE. Went to the iPod_Control directory from My Computer\Removable Disk, and all of my music files are in the Music\F00 directory. When I went to system tray icon, clicked on the one with the green arrow, and unplugged the FireWire, my iPod said "OK to disconnect." So I unmounted my iPod, but it still remained on the "OK to disconnect" mode with "Disk Mode" written on top of it [all this time even when it was in the "Do not disconnect" mode, it still has "Disk Mode" on the top]. I tried pressing any button, but with no result. Could anyone help me with this?

# 62 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Well, it works now! Went to the Apple store, and the tech guy explained some stuff to me. The folder with the exclamation mark and the permanent "OK to disconnect," is the iPod trying to tell you that the iPod is finding difficulties in accessing the iPod's systemware. Which means, NO MENU FOR YOU! So, what he did was wiped the iPod clean by using the Restore function on the Updater [on a Mac], and he told me that I could start uploading my files again. In my case, I just put in my iPod on the dock, opened up Ephpod on my PC, and everything went fine from there. Dude! Took this long...

# 64 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
This is my first time looking to a forum for help, so hopefully I do this correctly and hopefully someone can help me.
This weekend, I got my iPod (which is mad cool). Since I was home, and my father had a iBook, I used that to get what
music I had with me downloaded on to it, and everything worked fine.
Then, I came to school, and tried to set it up on my computer here, which runs Win98SE.
But I'm having trouble.
I managed to install the updater, but my computer doesn't recognize the iPod. In the devise manager, when the iPod is connected,
there's a yellow question mark next to which says Other Devises. Under that is a yellow question mark and exclamation point and
it says USB devise.
So, I'm led to believe that I need some sort of driver? I have the iPod dock connecter to USB 2.0 & FireWire. I'm not sure what to do
now though, if I need something else, or what. So let me know if you've got any solutions or ideas.
Thanks.

Hmm, i haven't seen this mentioned in this post, so i'll bring it up now.
How about the new 2.1 software?
As always it claims to only work on 2k+ so us win98 users seem doomed. So i was wondering if anyone's managed to do something cunning with this update like with the 2.01 update to make it work on win98?

I'm a little surprised I haven't seen more discussion of this.
Update 2.0.1 was not officially supported under Win98 but was under WinME which is from the same codebase so it was possible to work around the installer warning.
Update 2.1 is no longer supported even by WinME so it's not unlikely that Apple have dropped all support for the Win9x codebase, in which case you may be out of luck.
Just my 2c worth.

# 68 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
ok... so i've got the 2.0.1 updater installed, but i keep getting message "ipod is not connected".
i have it connected via USB 2.0 and the ipod is a new 30 gb. i'm assuming that i need the ipod USB2 drivers, but have no idea where to find and install them.
i've considered trying EphPod, but it says only firewire will work... also no free trial macopener available either. arghhhh!
this is all so confusing ... why can't apple support 98se?
any help for this ipod newbie would be appreciated!
# 69 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
ok, forget my last post ...
i've tried something different. i've figured out that i have a firewire connection through my Audigy card so i'm a little closer now > when i plug it in, it is recognized as a removable drive with 3 folders in there (calender, contacts, notes). i was able to 'restore' ipod with updater, but the UPDATE button continues to be shaded and i've never been able to update.
tried dragging a couple of mp3's into removable drive, but nothing shows on ipod itself. i'm guessing because i don't have musicmatch in there yet.
what else can i do to get this puppy working?
i would like to try EphPod, but i can't find the 'free trial version of MacOpener'
HELP PLEASE!
# 70 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
So wait. let me get this straight; this little update will work with Windows 98 FIRST EDITION (no SE or any of that crap)? I really would like to know since I was/am thinking about getting one, but I heard that it didn't work unless you got some kind of card for $30. After I do this, will i still need to buy that card and put it in my comp before I can start transfering music, or can I jsut use my USB port? Sorry if this has already been answered, but I really don't feel like going through 4 pages of posts! Thanks a ton in advance!
# 71 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
My 3g ipod will not connect for love nor money - tried ibons workaround but cannot find iPod-for-win-updater-instir.exe. Also can't find it on the web - anyone got a copy?
Regards,
Michael
# 72 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
I don't think the workaround works any more, with the iPod 2.1 updater, so we're all resigned to upgrading windows, unless someone finds a new workaround for Win98. You don't need to get a Firewire card if you don't want to though, a USB port works just fine. You do have to buy the USB cable though, because the iPod only comes with firewire.

# 73 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Hello everyone,
I have a new ipod 20G and I'm trying to make work on a laptop with windows 98 se. I've reading and re-reading all the messages on this thread and I still can't make it work.
here's a little background for those interested in helping:
- I bought a new Firewire card and installed it on the laptop. No problem with that.
- I installed Ephpod: no problem either.
- I tried to get the famous 2.0.1 updater from the CD but it seems like I have the same problem Kottbullar had originally. First box I get is "Choose language". At that point there is no updater on the windows/temp directory. Then I get the "white screen" with the "install" and "exit" buttons and still no updater anywhere.
- Kottbullar solved his problem by "uninstalling or disabling MacOpener". I don't think I even have that software. Does it come with Ephpod ? Should I uninstall EphPod ?
- I can find an "updater.exe" file on the cd but that doesn't seem to be the "ipod-for-win-updater-instlr.exe" that's needed.
- Running that "updater.exe" tells me that my Ipod is not plugged in. If I plug it in, then I get a "Do not disconnect" on the ipod and the laptop stalls.
So there you have. Just another guy stuck with a 3g ipod and windows 98se. Any help would be apreciated.
Thanks.
# 74 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
HELP! It appears that Apple may have stopped your fix!!!
The file the install creates now appears to be
iPod For Windows CD Installer
It results in
1: This installation cannot be run by directly launching the MSI package. You must run setup.exe.
Am I getting it wrong or have Apple closed the door on your fix.

Can you check your File>Programs to see if MacOpener is there? If so - uninstall/disable. When I d/l'd Ephod, it was nbundled with it.
let us know what you find.......
# 76 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Hi,
Thanks for replying to my post.
I checked the Start/Programs, there is no MacOpener. I also searched for "macopener.*" on my C drive and I also went to "add/remove prograns": still no trace. I have the same feeling as banjo bill: Apple might have disabled this work around.
In which case I would only have one solution: return my brand new Ipod :( . It's sad to admit but at this point I can't even think of upgrading my OS because I don't want to take a chance to screw up my laptop.
In case you have a brilliant idea, please let me know. I would be very happy to keep and use my Ipod.
# 77 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
You won't screw up your laptop by upgrading your OS! Get someone to do it for you if you're worried about doing something wrong. Unless it's a corporate laptop, owned by your company, and configured to work on their network. If that's the case, get someone in your IT department to tell you what you can do. You shouldn't have to return your iPod! Unless you just don't want to spend the $$$ for the new OS, which is understandable...

# 78 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Thanks for reassuring me but one of my friends went through this upgrade and it was a complete nightmare. On paper, it looks quite good. A few steps to follow, a little discipline and that does the trick. In reality, it's a whole different ball game. For the moment, I'll keep it as my last option.
On the other hand, if anyone has succesfully connected an Ipod 3G with a windows 98 SE recently (over the last week or so), I'd be more than happy to try their solution. I'll check this board as often as possible over the next week so do not hesitate to post something.
Thanks.

# 81 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Thanks !
I should have posted this a few days ago but never found the time. So here we go:
- First of all, thanks to Kottbular for sending me the adapter. Now my Ipod is working perfectly with my windows 98 SE, but it wasn?t easy. Here are some steps I went through, the description is not always very precise since there was some experimenting and some trial and error kind of research. I hope it will help all others stuck in the same situation.
- The adapter worked perfectly with windows 98 SE but when I plugged the Ipod, nothing was happening. My guess was that there was something wrong with the Firewire card. I had read somewhere (maybe on this forum) that you have to install the Firewire patch BEFORE you install the Firewire card. So I uninstalled the card, run the patch again and re-installed the card.
- At that point, I got the ?Can?t mount Ipod? message. To fix that, I had to go to the PCMCIA card (task bar, bottom right, icon with green arrow) and check the card. It showed an icon with an exclamation mark on it. Double clicking on it I discovered the following message ?Windows stalled accessing the following device and will NEVER try to access it again unless you click here?. Obviously not the exact message but you get the idea. So I clicked ?there? and rebooted (one more time).
- On restart, the situation was much better: the Ipod was recognized as an external drive on windows explorer and I downloaded ephpod, installed it and configured it.
- The only remaining point was the ?Do not disconnect? message staying on the Ipod even when the laptop was turned off. To get rid of it, I had to go back to the PCMCIA card (green arrow on task bar, bottom right) and disconnect manually.
That?s it. Long post. Not very precise but I hoped it will help others stuck in the same situation. If you need the adapter, I can send it to you.
Good luck.
w.

# 83 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users

# 84 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
I think I am in need of the adapter. I have a new iPod stuck in disc mode and I am unable to run the updater.
# 85 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
First let me thank all of the forum regulars. What a great place for information for those of us having trouble...
I'm having some of the same problems. I have a nice new 15g harddrive with no troubles at home. However, I want to use it as a harddrive to move files back and forth from work to home. The work computer is running Win98se.
I have followed the instructions to get the update onto the computer, but the computer still doesn't find the ipod. I am using the supplies firewire/usb cable that I use at home, but at work I can only use the USB end. I'm not getting the ipod in the tray and the updater is telling me that the ipod isn't mounted.
Any help is appreciated...
Thanks!

if so, you may ned to uninstall everything else, install the drivers again and give it a kick.

Hi folks!
Well, ordered one of the delightful new ipods from the Apple store and it's only one day overdue so far (naturally, as some of you may sympathise, have been going utterly mental waiting for it to arrive)
CAN YOU PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!
Unfortunately, i'm one of those poor saps who has Windows ME as my operating-system. On buying the Ipod I had no idea it wouldn't work with this OS. However, reading these forums diligently has given me some hope. Although i'm figuring the ipod will come equipped with the new update, am i correct in thinking I can make it work with the Updater 2.01?
Having just spent 400 pounds, I really can't afford to upgrade the OS on this computer. Can anyone please please please post me the 2.01 updater to: REMOVEallan.mckenna@blueyonder.co.uk
I will forward it to the next poor soul who finds themself in the same position.
THANKS!!!!!!!!!

Im terribly sorry if this has been asked but does any one else have a problem trying to install the 2.1 updater on Windows Millenium.

# 93 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Hi!
Windows ME and Windows 2000 are different operating systems (silly isn't it).........The ipod isn't designed to support this OS, however, you may still be able to get it to work using the workaround described in this Sticky. For that you will require the 2.01 updater. Post an email address and i'll forward it to you as someone has done for me.
Please note: I haven't yet got my ipod to try this out so i can't offer you any guarantees that you'll be able to work. Fingers crossed!

# 96 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Hey all-
I've read the posts on this thread and still can't figure out what I'm doing. The 2.1 updater on my disk doesn't seem to do any good. I'm so non-apple that I can't even figure out what model or generation I have... All I've got is that it's 10G and brand new. I already have a firewire installed on my laptop, but it's never been used. I plugged the iPod into it and my computer doesn't appear to recognize it. My iPod is only speaking Japanese right now, but the big circle with the line through it is telling me that this isn't working. Please help me! And please email any patches to caseyrhodesmd@hotmail.com.
Thanks,
Casey
Update- I figured out it's a 3G 10GB iPod. I'm now in English. The iPod now flashes 'do not disconnect' when it's plugged into my computer via the firewire. I've tried installing via the EphPod route but it's still a no-go.
# 97 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Does the i-pod have 2 b connected when go through the search file stages underlined on the very first thread...
# 98 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Hi, I've just today bought a 20gb Ipod and have had no amount of trouble installing it into Win 98SE.
I've managed to run Updater ver 2.1, the Ipod is mounted in dock and connected through firewire to computer. It's recognized in device manager, however I can't find any software installed in my list of programs at all.
I would be grateful if somebody could advise me where I go from here, do I perhaps need the 2.01 updater?, if so could Kottbullar very kindly send it to me at
davedeering@ntlworld.com
I'm going away in three days time, and I would love to take all my music with me.
Thanks and regards

# 99 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Hey guys, this is my first post in this forum - I just picked up an iPod (3rd gen, 40 GB) and am trying to have it run with my Windows 98 SE. Apparently, it seems that I'm at a disadvantage since I have 2 big factors working against me ...
1. Windows 98 SE
2. Have USB 1.1 capability on my laptop (no firewire)
I've read through this thread and I believe I have the right updater.exe file but when I go and run it, it can not connect to my iPod and then my PC just freezes. In order to remedy, I obviously have to have the means to connect to my iPod which is through USB. Whenever I connect the optional Apple USB cable, Windows says it found the iPod USB hardware but can't find the driver for it. How can I make my PC talk to my iPod?? If I need the driver (which I can't get at since it won't run through the whole install) which I believe I do, where do I obtain it? Does someone have the driver they can send me if somehow got a hold of it? Thanks much appreciated.

# 103 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Thanks everyone. This forum has been v helpful, but only so far!!
Background-
I have w98se laptop with generic firewire port & 3g 30gb ipod. The ipod is showing on the bar at the bottom right of screen & is recognised as e drive. The ipod screen shows do not disconnect. I can cut & paste songs & other files into it but they don't show up in the ipod menu.
I have downloaded ephpod but when I open it & the wizard starts and I chose e drive, the following message comes up
'The drive u hsve selected does not appear to have the proper ipod directory structure ipod_control, & several sub directories, inc 20 hidden directories of music files'
Then asks: 'build ipod directory structure?'
When clicked on says 'cannot create :ipod_control
ephpod then opens, but when trying to load music files into ephpod gives the following message 'destination path invalid.
Any suggestions much appreciated!!

Kottbullar, you seem to be in high demand around.
I too could use the 2.01 adapter.
Please, plaese, please send to monkeydrum@rcn.com
This forum rocks. It will rock even more if I can get music out of the pod tonite.
# 105 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Thanks for the help you've already given me, guys. I'm planning to buy an iPod soon, but my computer runs on Windows 98 SE, and I'm wondering if someone could send me this 2.01 updater I keep hearing about so that I won't have to use my new iPod as a paperweight.
My email is darienphoenix@hotmail.com
# 106 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
I just got a 3G 20GB iPod (in Japan) and am about to install it on my computer (Windows ME). However, the Japanese software (that came with it) will not run on my computer and I can only download 2.1 updater from apple's site. I have read the past 8 pages (lots of good help, thanks) and think that I need the 2.01 updater. Could someone send me the software, I promise to send it on to anyone else who needs the help.
My address is tawassel@hotmail.com
Also, my friend has Windows XP...would it be possible to configure my iPod on his computer with the 2.1 updater and then use it on my computer with ephpod? Or do I need to update the iPod on my computer inorder to be able to access and use it?
Thanks for the help.
# 107 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Well at least i'm not alone in this.
If anybody has the 2.01 updater or a link to where i can get it please post it up here or send it to joe_le_taxi@hotmail.com as i'm not looking forward to the look of disappointment on my girlfriend's face when she realises she can't use the shiny new ipod i'm giving her for xmas.
Please help!!!
Thanks a lot & merry xmas.

# 109 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Killerchip, I tried your link but it doesn't seem to work (maybe all those other ipodlounge users have crashed it?!). Would anyone be able to send me the updater directly? If so could you let me know and tell me the size of the file so I know whether my hotmail will cope or if I need to give you another email address.
I would be extremely grateful if any of you lucky users can help me out: right now I'm a girl about town without a soundtrack!

You certainly can use xPlay, which is what I was using for a year or so.

Hello everyone. ive been reading everything here to try and get my ipod running....no luck
I have a new 10gb 3rd edition ipod. im running windows ME.
I don't have the 2.0.1 updater. Could someone please send it to me either on AIM at my name, Lavvalammp. Or via email,
lavvalammp@yahoo.com.
I've tried everything here. Right now, the ipod seems to be recognized as a removable drive., and i can see the folder "ipod_control" in it. dragging and dropping mp3's wont work. im able to connect it and see the little grey box with the green arrow. i tried to run ephpod, but in that getting started wizard after i told it the removable drive my ipod is set up as, it says this:
"The drive you have chosen does not appear to have the
proper iPod directory structure. All iPods have a main
directory called ipod_control, and several subdirectories,
including 20 hidden directories of music files.
You will not be able to continue with EphPod unless you
build this directory structure."
Can anyone help me out? thank you
# 112 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
You can simply drag songs onto an iPod. You need to have a program do that so it can update the iPod's database, so the iPod knows where they are at. So you need to download a program like ephPod or iTunes and use that program to transfer the songs.
So, get a copy of one of them, and if you are having problems than post again.

Has anyone helped you with this? I need help in the same manner. I know where the software is to "restore" my device, but I can't get windows to locate a driver for the "iPod USB Interface" HELP - I've been reading these threads for two days and can't find the final piece of the puzzle.

# 114 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
just got a 40G ipod. have been running win98se and already have a firewire port and MusicMatch installed but I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to this stuff. I've been reading the forums and seem to be having similar problems.
based on what I read I was under the impression that all I needed to do was run updater.exe. but that doesn't seem to work. I've tried the workaround (although my setup deviates a bit from that described - I don't get the "welcome to the installshield..." message. once I've selected the language I get an "install" option, not a "next" option...)
Anyway, I can find updater.exe on the cd. I moved it to a directory on my hard drive and ran it (there is no "iPod-for-win-updater-instlr.exe" on my machine; just the "iPod System Software Updater 2.0.1.msi" on the cd and "updater.exe". I select reset and it seems to go through the process.
While my system will recognize the removable disk nothing gets loaded in my start menu and musicmatch does not recognize the device. Am I doing something wrong?
Also, the ipod continuously flashes "do not disconnect" once the system recognizes the disk.
I am considering upgrading to XP but my machine is older and might not have the resources to run XP effectively.
Thanks for any help...

# 115 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Did you 1) download and install the updated firewire support from the ms web site? 2) ensure that the PC sees the iPod *before* running the updater.exe?
Also, if you haven't updated the firewire driver until now, ensure that you don't have a config error on your "removable drive" under the device manager. If that conflict is left unresolved you will have issues with the updater.exe reading the iPod.
You couldn't find the other update-whatever-this.exe because that is from the old version. I am running 2.1 under win98se with firewire and Ephod.

Already have been using MusicMatch for another MP3 player. Tried to add the ipod plug in (not sure if that was necessary) but the musicmatch site gave me a similar error message for unsupported op system. do you know if anyone has had success running musicmatch with an ipod in win98se?

# 118 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Well, I just got a 20GB iPod for Christmas, and I attempted to run the installer program (E:\setup.exe), just like ibons said. It didn't give me a "welcome" screen, and didn't say "welcome to the installshield wizard for iPod for Windows download installer"; it just opened a Window with a picture of an iPod, and two buttons: INSTALL and EXIT. Clicking INSTALL crashes the program as soon as it sees you have Win 98.
So I opened it again and, without clicking anything, I searched for the "iPod-for-win-updater-instlr.exe". All I found was a program in windows\temp called "UPDATER.EXE". I clicked it. Nothing happened.
So I searched the CD, and found that there were many setup.exe files. I ran the one at E:\program files\apple\iPod Updater\setup.exe, and a window opened telling me it was installing the 2.0.1 updater. Just for a lark, I clicked "NEXT", even though I knew it would crash when it saw I was running Win98.
Guess what. It DIDN'T.
The install completed without incident, and when I went to my start bar, sure enough, there was an "iPod" program group, and inside was an "updater" icon. I clicked it, and it said the iPod was disconnected, so I put it in the dock. I got the dreaded "Do not disconnect" message continuously for about an hour, then dismounted it using the icon in the system tray. I also noticed it had not been assigned a drive letter.
So I rebooted, and now it had a drive letter, D:, and the updater did recognize it. I noticed that the "restore" button was lit up, but the "update" button was not - and it was still flashing "do not disconnect".
So I dismounted it again, and hit the restore button. After the process was finished (about 5 minutes), the unit immediately began flashing "do not disconnect" again...grrrr...and I guess I am stuck.
I already have MMJB 7.5, so I simply entered the registration key on the CD sleeve, and it was accepted - but MMJB says I have "0 portable devices"
Questions:
1. Does it sound like I installed the updater properly? I think I did, but the instructions above definitely didn't work in my case. Maybe it's a different install CD?
2. Is it as ominous as it sounds that I can't get the "update" button to light up?
3. Could this be a FireWire card issue? Several people have reported that Belkin FireWire cards don't work well, and that is what I have.
4. Could this have anything to do with MMJB?
5. Any input on the "do not disconnect" message? I disabled my firewall and antivirus, but no luck.

# 119 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
I'm pretty new to this but my experience was similar to yours. What I found out was that my iPod was actually installed but MusicMatch doesn't recognize it. If you try to download the iPod plug-in for MusicMatch (an option in MusicMatch) you will get a message indicating that the plug-in won't install under win98.
I tried Ephpod and found that it downloaded the mp3 files without a problem. It seems like a solid program; unfortunately for me I have more than one player so I'm not sure I want to juggle MusicMatch and Ephpod.
I would try to find a way other than using MusicMatch to see if your iPod is installed (the forums should help).
Hope this helps.

# 120 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Well, it's been two straight nights in front of my PC, and no luck.
Here's what I've done so far, with guidance from this forum:
1. Installed MS FireWire patch, no problem;
2. Installed FireWire card (Belkin), no problem;
3. Installed v 2.0.1 updater, no problem;
4. Installed ephpod, no problem.
I can see the iPod in windows explorer (drive I:) and I can see the folders inside it (ipod_control, etc.). I can even drag and drop songs to it, BUT can't see them on the iPod.
PROBLEMS:
1. iPod flashes "Do not disconnect" continuously, unless I am restoring, or the battery is charging. Flashing continues until I dismount it using the gray-box-and-arrow icon;
2. When I run updater, I can "restore" to my heart's content, but the "update" button is grayed out;
3. ephpod tells me that the file structure is invalid, and that folders such as "ipod_control" must be created, even though I can see those folders are already there;
4. When ephpod tries to create the folders, it tells me it can't create ":\iPod_control"
WHAT I'VE TRIED, WITH NO SUCCESS:
1. Uninstalled FireWire card, reinstalled patch, reinstalled card;
2. Uninstalled and reinstalled ephpod;
3. Uninstalled and reinstalled updater software.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP...I AM AT MY WIT'S END!

When you get to the point where you start up Ephpod and it can't create the iPod_control directory, rerun the updater once more (I used updater v 2.1) and then continue to run Ephpod, let it try to create the control directory, if not successful, exit Ephpod and try again...it took me a couple of times. Also, I had a "problem device" in my system device manager that had to be removed...it was the first instance of the firewire card without the patch installed.

I bought my sister an ipod for Xmas. It's a 3g 20g ipod that I have installed on my computer (xp) with no problems. But now, I want to run it off win98. (her computer) when I try to install it on the old puter, I have to run 2.0.1 right? Does this mean when I plug in the ipod it will reboot it and I will losse all the music I have on there? Or have I completely got it wrong? And have we decided that USB on win 98 won't work? Is that because of the ipod? Because I have a USB port on the puter, and I can't undersatand why I would have one if I can't use it.
Dazed and confused, and in some dire need of puter 101 help!

# 127 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
This all looks way too complicated.
I wanted to use my 3G iPod (2.1) on Windows 98SE and found the same problem, iTunes won't install.
Solution: WinAmp with iPod plug-in
I don't believe it matters what version iPod & firmware you have, WinAmp & the iPod plug-in will work on Windows 98SE.
I know it's not iTunes but in many respects it's better: great visualizer plug-ins, bluetooth remote plug-in, & playable directly from the iPod through the dock connector.
And its very easy, no installation hacks required.
www.winamp.com
I still use iTunes on my XP ofcourse.

# 128 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Reformatting will delete everything. Does ur sis have win 98, or 98SE. The iPod won't work on just plain 98. U don't have to reformat at all, I had XP on my laptop. It was an old, faulty PC(like a 1998 model), so I bought my iPod&firewire card to back up all the imporatant files i had on it. Sure enough after I backed up most of the files, it crashed. I had to restore my laptap back to 98SE. I was devastated cuz i couldn't get my iPod to work with it. After I got a firewire patch from this very post and updated a driver, it now works fine if not better. There are many programs that u can use the iPod with that work with 98SE. I use Ephpod. It's free and super easy to use, plus it looks nice. Just go on google or download.com for iPod soft. if u need to know how to update the driver just ask me, or check out my other posts.

# 130 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Can I just download iTunes and sort out all my mp3 tags and then hook up my ipod via usb, 'see' it as an external drive and drag and drop all my mp3's onto it ?
# 131 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
um...to answer ur first question, just go to the begging of this post. Second question, no u can't. Ur iPod HD is different from where listening music is held. If u want to be able to listen to the music on ur iPod, u'll need software. Download ephpod or something. There's lots of free iPod soft that works with 98SE
# 132 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Cheers, new problem - I've extracted the 2.1 updater file as advised in another thread and hooked up my ipod using a firewire/usb 2.0 dock connecter cable. Ran the file and it still says my ipod is not connected. Thing is, my laptop is usb 1.1, is this the problem or is something else awry ?
I'm getting the same msg that a lot of people seem to be getting - the pc looks for an ipod usb driver, but can't find one, has anyone found a way through this yet ?
# 133 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
Sorry buddy...can't help u too much there. I have an old laptop with a usb 1.1, but I bought myself a notebook firewire card. The usb 1.1 data transfer isn't nearly as fast as firewire or usb 2.0. I've heard it possible to get iPods to work with a usb 1.1, but it will cause problems. My advice is get a card, depending on how bad you want ur iPod to work with ur laptop. Technology...it updates too fast...

# 140 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
I have a 15Gb, 3G iPod.
I'm running windows 98.
I installed the updater program succesfully, but my problem is that my iPod will not connect to my computer. Firewire is not compatible with windows 98. If I connect it with the USB, it won't show up as a drive or anything and it doesn't even say "do not disconnect."
I'm not sure if it means anything, but I was able to connect it to my dad's computer (with USB) which uses windows ME. Unfortunately, none of my music files are there.
What do I need to do?
korex at 2007-11-15 19:28:02 >

# 141 Re: Ipod 2.01 updater for Win98 Users
^^ I have the exact same problem...
Win 98SE, 3G 20GB, USB/Firewire 3-Way Lead, Installer 2.0.1, iPod-for-win-updater-instlr.exe installed. Yet Updater.exe says that the iPod is not connected. And as soon as I close Updater.exe, my machine freezes.
Thus I think I need drivers for it to establish a conection with iPod's USB Interface. And I don't think they will be easy to find. If not, then I guess I'll have to resort to using Firewire.
