setting up 30gb ipod on Win98SE
My dad has just picked up a new 30gb ipod but only has windows 98se which he has upgraded the firewire support on. One small problem is that he can't install the apple software which lets him format it as a fat32 drive, he is still able to add tracks via xplay/ephpod but is would be easier if it could be reformated. Does anyone know how you would go about it?
He's only back for a visit from Denmark and its a bit hard for me to pop over from the UK to restore it if he has any problems ;)
Can the windows reg be hacked to make the apple software thing its me for example? Can he just format the drive as fat32 and restore it?
Many thanks
Rich

To my somewhat limited knowledge there is no way to format the new iPods to windows using win98se. This really bummed me out because that is all I have. So, to get around all of this I just went over to a friends house who has an XP machine, installed the firewire ports, formatted the iPod, and then took out the firewire ports and reinstalled them on my computer. Then I just used ephpod to transfer all my music to the iPod. It was fairly difficult because I have an old computer, and I needed to install all kinds of drivers and patches and crap. Finally I got it to work. Hope that helps!

don't think the ephpod updater works, but to format your ipod as a fat32 drive in win98se, check out my post here on how to do it manually :) hope it helps...

You can most definitely do it. You can't install the software, all you need is the updater. Here's how ( http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2970) you can get the updater from the new 2.01 firmware using win98.
