Windows Formatting
Is it likely that a firewire card that is built into a motherboard be the sort to have problems seeing my Ipod.
The FW does work...at least it charges my ipod, and the device management says it works too. also i get the little icon up in the corner (without red cross) so i'm guessing that it can see the dock.
But when it comes to the point in the installation where i need to configure it to windows...it doesn't see it. no matter how many times i try to reconnect the ipod and/or reset it.
would people say that a stand-alone pci fw card is potentially better than what i'm using at the mo?
cheers for any help/advice.
p.s. i'm using windows XP pro.

I had the exact same problem with my mobo. I have found that a PCI firewire card works. I have no idea why the internal firewire on the mobo doesn't work with the iPod.
I use the Adaptec 4300: a little pricey
also teh Belkind firewire card from Best Buy is known to work well.
When I plugged the firewire card in and when it was installed I have yet to have any problems.
Good Luck!

cheers for the pointer Todd, always reassuring to hear that my problem isn't unique, so hopefully isn't a busted ipod.
I had seen within the forums that the FW cards are a major stumbling block to many people, so i kinda guessed that it may be for me too.
so i have bought a new generic FW card (can't afford a branded one), VIA compatible (whatever that is!) and it's even got MAC logo on it! So i going to stick it in my work computer and fingers crossed will have a functioning ipod very soon.
i'll stick a report up of my findings, once it's in...in case others are experiencing the same probs.

That will do the trick - had the same thing yesterday - VIA will sort the problem!
Good luck!

Also, check to make sure Windows assigned a drive letter to the iPod. Sometimes you have to do that manually through the drive manager.

NO PROB! Let us know if that fixes your problem. Enjoy that iPod

Right...i bought a generic VIA Firewire card and tried it on my work computer (Windows 2000). But no joy. The computer cannot see it, so i cannot cofigure it to FAT32 (it's still in the defualt mac format). a mate had his mac laptop into the office (and which he uses for his old ipod). but that didn't see it either, at least not through itunes. after a little mucking about eventually he could tell that the thing plugged in was an ipod (never!!) but couldn't link to it. things not looking good.
Ok so i wanted to get home, so i took out the FW card and put it into my home computer. renistalled the software and tried again. still no joy. so i tried the forced FW connection...reset then FW/RW on th ipod. A flicker of hope. Briefly i could see an external drive and further exploration it gave me details of who made it etc. but this was short lived. by now i've installed, removed, re-installed the software so many times that it's started to mess up. I don't think i can install it properly anymore. so basically the software on the pc locked and i had to restart. after tha i couldn't get windows to see it again. getting very dejected now.
my last hope is that a mate bought his at the same time as me. i going to give it to him and see what happens on his computer.
basically check that the ipod actually still works. fingers crossed...as i'm not looking forward with dealing with the whole getting it fixed replaced malarky.
anyways...i'll let people know the outcome.

If that does not work, try Apple support. They are very helpful and if the iPod won't come to life, they will send you a box the next day, with pre-paid postage to return it to Apple.
I was having problems with a friends iPod, they sent the return box, but I was able to revive using CPR. Now, all is well.
Good luck!

Well i gave my ipod to a mate to test. And low and behold, he cannot get his computer to see it either. basically i think i can cofirm that it's buggered.
I'm guessing that the trouble is down the the first time i plugged it in. At the time i didn't give it much thought...but when i first connected it to it's dock there was a brief electrical crackle. I figured it was just the dock not connecting exactly snug since it was the first time. but now i think that something short circuited, something to do the connector.
anyway...i going to get apple support on the case and hopefully i'll have it back by the time i get back from holiday (sans ipod :( ).
hey ho, these things happen...don't know why but it's strangely reassuring that i now know that apple don't make their products any more reliably than anyone else. Switch...yeah right!
cheers for people help anyways...excellent forum this...keep up the good work y'all.
