Restore will not work

I am trying to restore my iPod. It is a 15G and I'm running WinXP with the 1.2.6 updater. The process starts as expected and I can get to the part where a checkmark shows up on the iPod saying "OK to disconnect". so I do. Then nothing happens, and the screen just stays that way. when I try to connect it again, the updater re-launches and states that I need to restore it. If I try to restore I get the same problem.

If I reset it, I get the folder with the exclamation point.

This sucks, I am just about to go on a long road trip.

Ha Ha. I managed to download the "latest" version of the updater from Apple's website which is V 1.2.6. Of course, my iPod takes version 2.0, which is nowhere to be found on the website. I reinstalled from the CD and viola...it's back to normal.

I feel like an idiot but at this point isn't it pretty much standard operating procedure to dowload the latest software when you get a new piece of hardware? why isn't the latest version up there?

2.0 is the newest firmware for 3G iPods.

Apple has this thing about not putting the first firmware up that ships w/a new iPod.

When the WiPods first came out you had to wait for the first firmware update to be able to get 1.2.1 so you could convert (legally) your MiPod to a WiPod. 'Twas a pain at the time.

They'll post 2.x sometime. When it's released it'll be up there.
