Ipod is full / CRC data error

I started in the music match forum because I thought this was a software problem - now I'm not so sure.

There are several threads revealing a problem in not being able to sync from Music Match. After a few tracks or no tracks there's a message 'Ipod is full'.

I returned mine to the retailer and they set-up a PC and showed me it working fine with MM software on a new PC (albeit with only 3 cds of tracks not the 300 meg I was trying to download).

Following a suggestion somewhere here, I unloaded the software and tried another highly recommended program (is it MC9?). This seemed to work - but with a lot of worrying clicks from the ipod disk, and rather slow. I found however that not all the tracks had been transferred - so this program has problem too.

Next tried just copying a load of files/directories to the Ipod using explorer / my computer. This operation stopped quite quickly each time with the message 'data error cyclic redundancy check'.

So what does this mean? Is this a disk problem? An XP driver problem (XP home edition)? A firewire adapter problem? Or a bios problem? Or mother board pci bus?

Anyway it puts music match in the clear for the time being!

Any clues would be greatly appreciated .. .

What kind of firewire card are you using? Most, if not all ipod problems can be traced to firewire card incompatibility.

Wobble's firewire board is a DV-1000. Info on www.innodv.com. Spec looks OK but I'm no expert.. ..

Motherboard is ABIT KT7 with AMD Duron 700 CPU3Dnow!

Well, this is not a firewire problem. Cyclic redundancy check is a big problem as far as disks go. I have experienced it with both floppy and CD disks, and as far as i know, certian setups are more sensitive to errors in this ( http://utopia.knoware.nl/users/eprebel/Communication/CRC/ ) for info on what it is.

Really, what you should do is do a LONG standard Format through windows, and then restore. It will take prolly a few hours to format, and another large portion of time to restore.

Now, i know that newer versions of Windows XP do not always check for a bad CRC without the correct setting. Unfortunately (or fortunately) , almost any computer that i go to has this turned on. Did you by any chance on the new computer check to see the integrety of all the stuff he/she put on?

Check the link, then format/restore, and it will be as good as new.

PS... Anyone else have problems with the apple support request page? It keeps telling me some #### about counties for my zip code, even though i already have one of the choices in it. A button on my Remote (the hold button) fell off, so i gotta get them to replace it. Oh well, i guess ill have to phone it in.

I finally killed the problem by changing the firewire adapter.

The Adaptec website shows that their adapters are specified for both PC and Mac. So I bought an Adaptec Duo with a Mac logo on the box. This gives both USB2 and firewire ports.

Immediately everything working according to the brochure.

Does anyone want to buy a new firewire adapter that doesn't work with the Ipod?

Yeah, I was going to say that getting a new card would most likely solve your problem.

Keane, sorry to disagree with you but almost always a CRC error on the iPod is due to incompatible firewire cards. CRC's and Disk-Write errors. If you hear clicking...get a new card. It's been the rule for a while and rarely if ever fails. Adaptecs (duo or 4300) tend to be the best.

Vindication feels good. Thanks, ashawley.

Ah thanks ashawley, i have only ever experienced a CRC with disks and CD's, so i figured the ipod would act similarly. Never figured a Firewire Card could be the problem. It seems like the whole firewire standard is a little bit touchy, but what can i say?

Anyway, thanks for clearing this up for me.
