New Hard Drive for my Music. I have a question........

Hi Guys,
I'm back after taking your suggestions and upgrading my computer. I've put in another hard drive for storage of my music. I purchased through Dell a 80 GB Internal EIDE Ultra Hard Drive.

Now, This may sound a little elementary, but how do I get all my music on that hard drive?? Do I re-install my ipod on the new HD or leave it where it is and simply save the music onto the new HD and leave the ipod software on the old? How do I do this correctly?

Thanks

Assuming you have all of you music on the old hard drive and now have both drives in your pc you just need to open explorer and drag the folder(s) with your music over to the other drive. If all of the music is only on your iPod I think you can copy it back with Ephod or Xplay.

Well, the music is all on Music Match now. I know...I know... I need to get another program, that will come when I get the Ram I ordered in Wed. You see my computer is so frigging slow due to the music being on my HD that I really can't even surf the net. It's that bad, which is why I'm investing in a new HD and some more RAM. I've got a brand new Dell , but they ship with only 128 mb of RAM?

So, I just click on the song in MM and drag it into the new HD? :D

Thanks!!

MM stores all music into a folder. Locate that folder and copy it to the new hard drive :)

yes, when you imported music into MMJB all it did was store the location on your PC where the music was. MMJB just maintains pointers to where your music files are located.

Many folks store their music in a "My Music" folder (a windows default folder). If you put your music there, just copy it to the new HDD in My Computer. Or move it actually which is what you want to do.

If you're not too sure where your music is, look in your musicmatch options, and there should be somewhere that lets you set where your library is stored.

Or i suppose you could run a search of your computer for .mp3 files, and see where you get the most hits.

Then, as the others have said, just move all those mp3s onto the new harddrive, just as if you were moving them to a 3.5" floppy.

Keep in mind however, that chances are if you just drag and drop them over, it will copy them. So you will have your music on your new harddrive, but the original will stay on your first harddrive. You'll need to delete them from the first drive in order to free up that space.

Awesome, this makes sense. I apreciate the help guys. The HD should be delivered today. ( fingers crossed) I can't wait to get my computer back. My music took it over. But i guess with only 128 mb of ram that was going to happen anyway.
Now I'm packing 640 mb and two HD's. Bring on the Box Sets!!!

Chances are it isn't the music that's slowing down your computer. But it's always nice to have a harddrive dedicated to mp3 storage.

Keeps things a bit more organized. Plus you get the room to expand your collection a lot more.

hope it all goes as planned (otherwise i'm sure we'll hear back from you about it :P )

Major bummer. Major. Ram works great. Then I notice that my computer doesn't have a spot for antoher internal HD. WTF. So I'm standing there with a $111.45 paper weight. I guess my next step is to return it and grab a external HD. Sheesh.

Hold on there my young Padawan.
How much stuff do you actually have on the old drive - are there a lot of programs and stuff that you cannot replace - or settings you cannot live without?
Because you could, and i have done this many times - start from scratch on the new drive - install the os, prgrams etc etc, then add the old drive as a slave, just placed carefully where it is not going to fall into the machine (I normally place the machine on its side - leave the side panel off and rest the dh on the frame - or in the pc - remember this is only for a short period)- then copy the stuff across, detach - and never have to deal with it again!

Just be careful!

^^Interesting.^^
Ice, I don't think I could handle that. Last night when I was putting in my RAM and trying to put in the HD I felt like I was defusing a bomb. Palms were sweating....red wire...green wire...beads of sweat dripping onto the processor. Just kidding.

You only have 1 slot for an internal HD? That's odd. Maybe you could try fabricating your own mount. Use your imagination. Just make sure everything is lying flat, or parallel to the ground like the other drives.

You could always take the floppy disk (assuming you have one) out temporarily whilst you transfer data from the old to the new hard disk.

you can get brackets to that attach to 3.5" drives like harddrives so that they fit into the 5.25" bays.

I have one of my harddrives mounted in one of the bays because my harddrive cages only hold three.

they cost me five bucks CAD for the set, and it came with hdd screws. check that out as an option.

okay if you're running a windows xp dell machine, please do get at least 256mb of ram, because my bro's dell came with only 128 meg and it crawled, but once i plunked in another 128mb it was smooth as a whistle.

another thing is, i'm quite sure any case can hold more than just one hard disk unless you're running one of those super slim profile chassis which only have space for one optical drive, one hdd and perhaps one floppy.. in which case i'd advise either buying an external housing to put your new hard disk or sacrificing your floppy..

but it's weird though, i didn't think any of the new dells came with slim casings anymore...

ibons: He may not have a Dell though. He stated that he only bought his second hard drive through Dell. If he has an old computer, then I guess it is possible he only has 1 3.5" internal rack. eBay it up to find some external drive cages.

hmm he did say "I've got a brand new Dell , but they ship with only 128 mb of RAM? " :) that really hit me because when my bro decided to get his dell, i was boggled at how they could offer only 128mb of ram as their basic configuration, seeing as ram prices are pretty cheap now and all.. their pricing methods are really willy i must say, they give you the best processor and cut down on the rest so that it seems a bargain.

but then again, if you have to get a branded pc i guess they're reasonable value.

Ahh whoops, I guess I missed that post. :)
Frankly, I don't care if Dell offers 128MB of RAM in their basic configuration because other places sell RAM much cheaper than what Dell wants for you to pay. Perhaps ross88 is just a computer newbie, and doesn't really know about the internals of his computer. Enlighten him!

Hey fellas,
Yeah I have a Dell. You're right it came with 128mb of Ram and the thing was utterly crawling. Just put in another 512mb and it's MUCH better. I got this computer for a b-day present. My parents ordered it through the internet and once I got it here at my apartment I started to nose around. So I purchased the RAM and the internal drive for my digital files. It's weird because my Dad is a network adminstrator for the Navy and you'd think he would have noticed the Ram thing.

So, the only option left is to return the drive through Dell and buy an external? It looks as if I do have a slim casing.

# 21 Re: New Hard Drive for my Music. I have a question........
No, you can buy a 3.5" external cage to put your internal hard drive into. Or you can buy a mounting cage to put the hard drive into an unused 5.25"drive slot.

# 22 Re: New Hard Drive for my Music. I have a question........
Just buy a new case, swap everything over, and be rid of that crackerjack Dell box. I can't imagine any case not having room for another hdd. I just put one in a friends computer. He had the Walmart HP special, but even it had room for 2 drives in a micro tower.

New case solves the whole problem.

Or, I have seem cages you can mount internally for extra drive space, but I'm guess its cramped as it is in there.
