Windows 98SE w/ IPod 2?

My wife got me an IPod 2 for Father's Day.

Lo and behold, the Ipod CD won't install any of the Ipod operating system on my Sony Vaio w/ Windows 98SE, giving me a "Severe" error message:
"This version of Operating System is not supported".

Nothing from the CD installs, as a result.

There's no MMJB IPod 2 plug-in (all my MP3 files are organized already in MMJB on this Windows 98SE computer, but I have no IPod plugin so I haven't tried transferring these files, waiting to find out if the old plug-in will work w/ an Ipod 2).

Ephpod crashes on this same computer without letting me transfer any files.

Do I have a computer that's just completely incompatible with the IPod 2, even though I have a FireWire port?

you don?t need the cd for the 2nd gen. ipod. just install the microsoft firewire patch (if your ipod isn?t recognised as an external hdd) and use ephpod (check the software compendium (http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2286) for additional choices on software you can use). the reason ephpod crashes may be because you need that microsoft firewire patch. what type of firewire card do you have? some firewire cards show problems with the ipod (f.e. the audigy firewire slot). if you need to update (to current version 1.2.6, here?s a link (http://ipodlounge.com/downloads_windows.php?id=0). the updater is included, so future updates won?t be a problem). i?m running a gen. 2 ipod under win98se myself and i?ve never used the cd. post back, if you still encounter any problems.

Thanks, mrm.

But the link you gave for updater 1.2.6 actually took me to Apple's 1.3, which now says:

"iPod Software Update 1.3 is only compatible with touch-wheel and scroll-wheel iPods without a dock connector. The recently introduced iPods (April 28, 2003) do not need this update."

So, I think I'm back to absolute square one - a pristine, empty IPod 2 and a MMJB loaded with all my mp3s, and the twain shall never meet. :-(

My system is recognizing a portable hard drive that's the IPod when it's connected, so I don't think I have a FireWire problem.
Beyond that, nothing works.

mrm,

If the iPod is never recognized by Win98se then what? I continue to get the message "OK to disconnect" on the iPod when I hook it up to my computer. I never get as far as seeing it a a hd on my computer. Both my 5 & 10G show up and work fine with ephpod but not my new (& unused) 20G. What's the difference?
