ipod manager and musicmatch not detecting ipod
Hello everyone,
I finally got my ipod and I already have problem with it. Windows 2000 will detect the ipod and the "DO NOT DISCONNECT" appear on the sreen, but ipod manager and music match is not detecting my ipod. When I click the 2.0 updater in the ipod manager window, a window pops up saying "Cant mount Ipod". Am I missing something with the installation?
One more thing, the Ipod is showing on the unplug/eject hardware but when I click properties it says "Device is not functioning properly." although I dont see an exclamation point.
Anyone help me please.

Argh...
Sometimes 2K can be problematic w/the iPod. Not sure why.
Anyway, let me suggest that you first try uninstalling all the Apple software. Before you do that though, you want to make sure you have a copy of the updater program. Just copy it from the directory, C:\program files\ipod\ipod updater. It's called updater.exe. Put it somewhere you'll remember.
Then uninstall the iPod software. All of it (none of it is needed). Reboot, connect again, then try the updater. If you still get the "can't mount" error, turn off any virus program you have running as well as any other programs that might be accessing the iPod's drive.

I did what you suggest and still no luck. I really dont understand whats goin on. Windows wont detect my ipod when I connect it to my firewire card while its running, but when i reboot my notebook then the "Do not disconnect" appears on my ipod screen, the ipod manager icon is enable (without the X), but when I open musicmatch, all I see is 0 portable device.

I had the same problem with win2k and a 3rd gen. iPod.
I am not saying this is the answer, but try it anyway.
If the iPod has not been assigned a drive letter:
1. Right click on My Computer
2. Select Manage
3. Select Disk Manager
4. Right click on the iPod and select assign drive letter
5. Assign the iPod to the G: drive
Good luck

Scott - Should the iPod be seen as "ipod" or removable storage?
iPod4Life - what is your firewire card - i seem to be having the same type of issue - I have a D-link card.

Thanks for the help Scott, unfortunately I still dont see a hard drive for my ipod so I cant do what your suggesting. Im really starting to give up here. Ipod icon shows that its enabled but when you right click it, it says "Mount Ipod 0" Does windows trying to say that it detects the Ipod but its not mounted? Then when I open the ipod manager it shows 0 total size and 0 amount used. Musicmatch show portable device 0 too!
For your info Monkey IceCube, I'm using a belkin f5u512 firewire card with dongle.
Windows takes a while at start-up when I plug the ipod, I'm not sure if windows is having a hard time or conflict initializing the ipod.

NowI'm getting the dreaded exclamation point in the device manager under DISK DRIVES, Apple Computer 1394 SBP2 Device. I checked the properties and it says No driver installed for the device. What a heck!
Anyone use belkins f5u512 notebook firewire card? are there any compatibility issues with this card?

ipod4life - am having the very same problems. After nearly an hour on tech support line, apple have advised me to purchase a new firewire card. My currect one is part of the mobo (Asus) and list in device manager as a Texas Instruments OHCI compliant device.
My ipod appears as "Removable Storage", and is 39Mb (is a 15Gb ipod!!!).
Am also going to try what Scott and AShawley suggest, but have tried nearly everything! Will let you know later how it goes..
oops - forgot to add. The ipod charges from the Firewire card, and remains on "do not disconnect" but the PC cannot mount it to install the firmware..

Win2k on a notebook with a firewire pcmcia card is not a great combo.
for what's it worth, I have an IBM thinkpad t22 with win2k and a smartcard pcmcia card -- that I simply cannot get to work with the iPod. Like you guys, I have tried just about everything. In fact, I thought I toasted the iPod, all would do is flash the apple logo and the hard drive would constantly spin up and then down
on the other hand, I have a dell laptop with with win2k and the same pcmcia card and it works perfectly with ephpod.
I have tried with the Apple techs to no avail.
IMHO, each pcmcia card has its own chipset, which may or may not work with win2k and your laptop. I have a buddy at Microsoft and says to use only a pcmcia card that is Microsoft certified (of course). The belkin is recommended by Apple, but it is not windows certified as OHCI compliant.
Also, he said make sure you have the latest win2k service pack (SP3) and update you pcmcia drivers. Also, check with the maker of your laptop for any firmware updates.
sorry, I cannot be more helpful, but if I figure it out, I will let you know.
do not give up.
# 9 Re: ipod manager and musicmatch not detecting ipod
First of all, you guys are great, I'm actually a newbie in this forum and I'm so glad for all your response.
Anyway, now I wish I have a desktop, its been a week since I bought my Ipod and still cant get it to work with my notebook. So I decided to buy a generic pci firewire card so I can hook it up with my pc at work, the result IPOD works! I never had a single problem with the install, it went through flawlessly.
:( :( :(
To isolate the problem, definitely its not a hardware problem, because I did a bunch of troubleshooting which COMPAQ support is very helpful with and found out that pc card slot is working properly, notebooks supports 32-bit cardbus.
Now I'm down to the firewire card and I just tried with Belkins tech and still no response.
I'll probably return the firewire card and keep the pci card that I have on my pc at work.

Hmm - getting somewhere on mine now! Might be unrelated to the Firewire. Took the ipod to my mate (who built my PC) and it worked fine on his cheap generic firewire, and the ipod now has a few tunes on it.
My problem is that I have no C: drive. My OS is on F: Did a trawl of apple support and it states that the ipod software must be on C: I guess it's not clever enough to realise that C: isn't there and hence use F:
Am waiting for him to sort it (reformat and reinstall unfortunately). COuld kill him:mad:  but am on the other hand happy that I may have found the problem! Poor software though

FYI - I swapped out the D-Link firewire card and used a friends VIA chipset FW card - worked after a little tinkering!
Appears asthough the FW cards do play a major part in the iPod connection!
