win not getting "fresh" reboot after installation
i am going insane. after installing ANY ipod related software, and when i try and reboot, it just keeps giving me that "sorry for the inconvenience" B.S. OVER AND OVER AGAIN. when i hit, 'go to my settings that last worked' windows still can't recognize the ipod.
has anyone else had this problem before? i have tried every possible solution, every possible program. this reboot thing is whats causing the problem i guess. please help..
-b
p.s. im running Windows XP with a Mac Ipod.

hmmm, is this the first time you've connected your firewire card? Does it work w/o the firewire card connected? That can sometimes cause reboot issues.
If not, and you're trying to install MMJB, I really don't know what to tell you except search their knowledgebase. That program is nothing but trouble.
If it helps you any, there is nothing on the CD that you need to use your iPod, except the Updater, and that doesn't need to be installed, just copy it to your PC and double-click it to run it.
It's in a winroot folder on the CD, it's called "updater.exe". Just do a search for it on the CD.
Then use some other program like MC9, Xplay or ephpod. Any are better than MMJB.
Oh, and is there a reason you haven't converted it to a WiPod? It might be MacOpener if you have that installed, it caused crashes on mine in the old days before WiPods were around.

--thats what im still tryin to do.. if i could get it workin without converting it. (ive read a couple posts that macpods have a faster connect speed.. ?) but, if i were to convert it to wipod would macs be able to read it if i were to bring it to a mac?

If I do this method, what utility would allow me to unmount my iPod if the only prog I have is the updater.exe ?

Just use the Safely Remove Hardware icon. It looks like .
It's in your systray. Just click on it, and select the iPod. That umount icon is not needed at all.

OK, I'm a little confused. First off, macpods aren't faster in any way. In fact, using a macpod on a windows machine (with Macopener) is somewhat slower as the files need to be converted to the correct format when transferred.
So, are you saying that w/o any software installed, and when you connect the iPod your PC crashes?
Here's the test: uninstall all software. Start up PC. Connect iPod, run updater.exe. Restore iPod.
You're iPod will still be able to connect to Macs as they read FAT32. But, if you're trying to connect to transfer songs through iTunes, I don't recommend that (although it can be done), folks have run into problems getting their iPod's database corrupted.
Post back where (if anywhere) your PC is crashing. If it crashes when you connect the iPod, that most likely means your card is not connected to a bus-powered PCI slot. But it sounds like you know what you're doing. ;)

--ok check it, thanks for trying to understand me.. when i have not a program installed, removable disk J: icon comes up in my computer, but when i click it it asks me if i want to format it (obviously, because its HFS)

--firewire is on an integrated motherboard, on a pci slot. when i install xplay, the ipod icon then shows up in my computer this time, but when i click it, i receive the same error msg. this is what happens with any other program i install (ephod, musicmatch, etc.) but this is only because i cant get a "fresh reboot" right after installing these programs. i have to run into the msg when booting up "sorry for the inconvenience..." so i hit go to last settings that worked.
thanks alot for the info, im gonna try the updater and post back to let you know.
