20gb Will Not Charge From PC

Sorry if this has been covered in a recent post, but I searched and did not find anything.

Anyway, I have a 6 pin firewire card and the iPod cable but I cannot get the iPod to recharge while it is plugged into the PC. I am running Windows XP. Isn't it supposed to charge if its plugged into a 6 pin firewire port?

I'm moving this to the Windows forums since it is PC specific.

Sorry I do not have an answer for you, benklop, as I use my iPod on a Mac.

Laptop Firewire cards seem to not be able to charge while connected.

If you're running a laptop then this might be the issue.

Nope, it is a Dell Dimension 8250 with a Sony firewire card I borrowed from another computer.

While most cards do charge there are a few that don't. Check the card to see if there is a plug on it to accept power from one of your PCs power supplies. Some cards have this and don't draw from the PCI bus, but from this external power source.

If there is a plug there, just plug in a spare cord from your PCs power supply (if you have one left).

Otherwise, try switching the slot your card is in. Usually the first 2 slots are powered always. That might do the trick.

If that doesn't work, check the specs on your card to see if it's supposed to supply power..

And finally, get a different card if all else fails. ;)

Sorry to be so incompetent, but I am having trouble finding any information on my card. It is a Sony card that I took from an older Sony Computer. In Device Manager I found this:

Sony 8032 OHCI i.LINK(IEEE 1394) PCI Host Controller

I looked on the card and did not see a place to connect it to my power supply. It is in the second slot right now. In a couple minutes I will switch the slots and let you know if that worked or not.
