Strange Problem - XP wont recognize
Hello all
Looks like this is becomming a common problem...
I have had my 20 gb windows ipod now for about 6 months but have not uploaded to it for about 5 weeks as there was no need. Now when I plug it in to my XP box it instantly displays the apple logo, followed by "It's OK to disconnect" then followed by the apple logo again then onto the menu showing it is charging. XP will not recognize it I have never had this problem before.
Things I have tried:
Removing all Ipod and 3rd party software
installing ephpod
installing ipod for windows (CD)
I try putting it into firewire mode - I reset it (menu and play) then hold rw and ff while it is rebooting. the apple logo appears, followed by the ok to disconnect screen and it is frozen on there.
I'd be grateful for any help - it's driving me nuts.

Try this little trick, sometimes it works:
w/o the iPod connected, launch the Updater program
Connect the iPod
Sometimes this "unsticks" things. It's worth a shot...

hmm didn't seem to work. Launched the updater, said "ipod is not connected" then connected it and still the same process as when I connect it to xp normally :(

Anyone have any other ideas? Is my Ipod faulty because I can't get it into firewire mode?
Thanks,
Steve.

do you think I have a faulty ipod?
# 5 Re: Strange Problem - XP wont recognize
I had the exact same problem. AFter a few months it displayed that message for no reason.
I did the following:
1. Uninstalled all iPOD Plugins ( came with CD )
2. Took MusicMatch Off
3. Took Ephpod Off
4. Went to "My Computer", Right clicked, Properties, System Properties.
5. Once in "System Properties" i went to hardware, device manager.
6. Look for disk-drives, and the iPOD should be there.
7. Uninstall it completely from system ( right click, uninstall ), and reboot your machine ( make sure its d/c first).
Once windows is loaded up plug in the iPOD, and Windows should recognize it. It seems like a lot of work, but it'll save you time since you dont loose any music. After its recognized ( it should be ) download ephpod; im running 2.60f, and it works like a dream.
Hope this helped! :D Any further info, u can drop me a pm, email: pjstasyna@Rogers.com, icq: 64177713 or msn: pstasyna@hotmail.com

Thanks for the reply - strangely the ipod is not listed in the device manager anywhere - any ideas why?
Steve.

Same problem here with my new 15 gig iPod. After talking with Apple support, I sent it back for repairs. After checking it, they are sending me a replacement. After sending it in I've received the USB/Firewire cable. Hopefully, the replacement iPod will work with USB, Firewire, or both.

hmm yeah I thought the unit may be faulty. I have the warranty but no the receipt. I did not fill anything out when I bought the unit. I take it this will be major hastle now? Anyone know how I would go about this?
TIA

You might want to order the USB cable. It's out, now. $19.00 US. Windows XP is pretty good about recognizing USB devices.
# 10 Re: Strange Problem - XP wont recognize
hmm I doubt it's out in the UK yet but I'll try one out before attempting to return the unit. Thanks for pointing it out!

I asked the guy about the cable and he started at me blankly for a while lol.

So apart from this do I get a resounding "Your ipod has had it" from everyone else? :(
I've removed all software to do with it - plugged it in and it's charging away but nothing on XP

Have you updated your Winxp Installation?
SP1, and various updates?
# 15 Re: Strange Problem - XP wont recognize
no not yet - worth a go you think then?
# 16 Re: Strange Problem - XP wont recognize
windows xp is known for dodgy bugs like these mate. I think its you're best bet.
It may be:
firewire card, winxp installation or the unit itself, its REALLY difficult to tell :(
try updating winxp, and/or looking for newer firewire card drivers.

OK Done all that - now have an ipod icon in system tray with red square. Still notlisted in device manager and exactly the same thing happens when I plug it in as before :( ####### thing..

OK well turns out that it works with the small firewire connector now (don't know the jargon!) on the same firewire card (ASUS). This probably would have worked before but I never though of trying it. Just thought I'd let everyone know in case anyone else is having the same problem.

the 4-6 pin converter steve_c?
# 20 Re: Strange Problem - XP wont recognize
yeah that's the one lol. My asus MB has a PCI bracket which plugs into the mb - both connectors plugged in fine, just one has stopped working correctly. Could be the Hardware, Could be XP but at least we know it isn't the ipod - I think... ;)

i'm scratching my head right now, my method worked for me. This is a common problem with XP; iPOD just seems to stop connecting. Is there any possibility you can try your iPOD on seperate PC with WinXP installed?
Im thinking its the firewire card altogether. Only possible prob. i can think of. Even the basic MJB 7.5x and iPOD plugin off disc should work, especially with XP's fantastic plug and play support.
I dont even think formatting the PC would help.
Just try it on another PC if you can.
Reply with your results.

Hi !
my 1 1/2 year old 5Gig 1. Gen. Ipod has the same Problem ! After having that trouble Message "after connecting with FW Cable the Message is: "ok to disconnect"" i restart my system. XP was found during rebooting an error on the ipod HD and was checking that. After that i have access to the ipod again. I sayed to myself it was the best to restore the Pod with the ipod updater. After doing that everything seems to be ok for a while... I sync the Pod with itunes for windows and at song 65 the syc stopped and the system can?t find the ipod again ! after i?m doing that action i checked this board and found this thread and i say to me, ok this is windows xp... i take another fw-cable and checked it on the xp-labtop of my girlfriend, same problem ! now i killed my xp totally by formating after that i make a new installation with xp... same problem ! finaly i open the ipod and disconnect the HD and the power pins. Result is : same Problem ! The Ipod have a checked modus when you reboot and holding ff / ffw / and enter, i do that also all modes are passed ok only REMOTE and key is failed. Now i?m totally out of any ideas ! what i can do ? :(

I was having this same problem. I did diagnostic mode, and the 2 middle button, then 2 outter button thing... Disconnected, restarted. Didn't want to uninstall the software, I figured that it wasnt the problem. Eventually, I just said hey what the heck, I'll do a cold boot. So I just pulled the plug from the back, switched off the power on the power supply, waited 15 seconds, then turned the power back on. the ipod was plugged in thru all of this and as its starts up i just showed the recharging thing only without the diskmode or being recognized by iTunes, or windows. So at first i was bummed out but as I reached the login, i saw the message saying Do Not Dissconnect. AND i was back in action. I hope the cold boot methord works. I did fidle around with lots of stuff, over and over again, so maybe it did or didnt have a role in fixing the iPod...
