Sound Leveling...

Can someone explain to me the concept of "sound leveling" which MusicMatch lets you do before transferring songs to the iPOD. Does it merely make the volume level consistent across all the songs?

Also, I'm trying out MediaCenter 9 and I don't see an option for sound leveling in the iPOD "mode." Is there something in Media Center 9 I should know about, in terms processing the quality/volume of music in my library, either as part of transferring music to the iPOD, or as a seperate process?

Thanks!

Sound leveling does not work on MusicMatch, since it's a feature that Apple did not implement on Windows iPods.

Um, I don't know what you mean by that. I run MusicMatch 7.1 for WinPod, and sound leveling is indeed a built-in option. It's slow as sin--it'll take you hours to transfer a sizable number of files--but it works.

And yes, leveling is just making the sound consistent on all tracks before transferring them to the Pod. Doesn't improve sound quality or bitrate; if anything, it probably degrades it. But if you're not a hard-core audiophile and just want a simple solution to constantly adjusting the volume from song to song, it'll work for you.

if anything, it probably degrades it.

It degrades it if you increase the sound level too much,as it produces clipping. But if clipping(ie sound too high) is already there, lowering the level of the sound will get rid of clipping, thus increasing the quality of your tunes.

however i think it would be a better idea to use MP3Gain instead of MusicMatch...
