Duplicating mp3s?
Can someone explain why, when I sync the iPod with my windoze pc that mp3's are duplicated in the folder one level up from when they were originally?
for example ... I have joe satriani folder ... with album folder below it called engines of creation ... and in engines of creation i have all the mp3s for that album. So I sync the iPod in ephpod ... and in the joe satriani folder i get:
01 - joe satriani - 01 - devil's slide.mp3
00 - joe satriani - 02 - flavor crystal 7.mp3
00 - joe satriani - 03 - borg sex.mp3
etc. etc.
It's very annoying! What am I doing wrong?
thanks for your help in advance.
Joe

What "folder" are you talking about? Are you referring to when you browse the iPod? Keep in mind the iPod doesn't do folders. It stores your music randomly in 20 folders. The iPod organizes based on your tags. So, correct the tags on your songs to get things right.
Also, what you are viewing in ephpod is not the contents of your PC, but the contents of your iPod. Ephpod doesn't know anything about nor does it alter the tunes on your PC.

Thanks for replying Adam,
I'm talking about the folders that I've described ... they are on my PC not on the iPod. I was describing the structure that I ripped the music to.
Albums
|
-- Joe Satriani
|
--- Engines of Creation
|
-- joe satriani - track 1.mp3
And iPod does have a concept of folders ... it stores notes, contacts and your tunes etc in different folders on the windows version. There's even software that allows you to use it like an extra harddisk.
And something did alter the tunes on my PC ... i'm not sure if it was ephpod or the way the iPod syncs .... but i got duplicates of about 9 gigs of music ... all renamed in the format of 00 - artist name - songname.mp3
so i'll ask again ... anybody get the same thing happening or know what i did wrong?

Sorry, you're right about the Contacts folder. But in terms of music, it doesn't relate the folders you have on your PC w/the folders where it stores your tunes. It's all done through the iPod's database.
Regarding ephpod. It most certainly does not manipulate files on your PCs hard-drive. Perhaps your ripper or tagger did something to make copies of the tunes.....

could the way I have the files tagged cause them to be duplicated somehow?
that's the only thing i can think of .... i thought maybe the iPod needs them tagged in a certain way and so it copied them from the original file to it's own version of the file with correct tags and then sync'd those files with iPod. I couldn't believe it when I found every mp3 i have duplicated in the folder above it.
Chaos! :/
# 5 Re: Duplicating mp3s?
Nope, didnt happen. Ephpod lacks the ability to write mp3 files, all it does is transfer files. Best bet is either you have another program running, like an AV or Firewall that could possibly be interrupting (not likely), or most likely, its your ripper or tagger that screwed it up. Gotta agree with ashawley on this one. the ipod/ephpod will not do this at all.
# 6 Re: Duplicating mp3s?
well I'm stumped ..... did it again when I sync'd last night.
handy way of copying all my mp3's even though it's a bug.
:D

When I was playing around with MC9 (during the trial period), I went back to Ephpod (having read that the two softwares can play together), and after the Ephpod sync, I had hundreds of duplicate song files on my iPod!!!
Rather than remove them by hand, I ran updater to wipe iPod and resynced with Ephpod.
Needless to say, I dumped MC9 immediately...

Randy:
That was probably a function of not clearing your iPod before switching. Since the two programs deal w/the iPod's database differently you have to do a reformat when you switch to and when you switch back.
Or, it could have been a beta bug that I never experienced. If it was a bug, it sure isn't there any more.

Adam,
I did reformat when I started the MC9 trial. However, I was led to believe that having done that, I could go back and forth between MC9 and Ephpod at will.
Guess I was wrong. Ah, well...chalk it up to experience.
Cheers

Yeah, they will work Randy, but you'll end up w/problems because when you go back, ephpod won't manage the DB that same as MC9 did.
It's the curse of iPod programs, but not a big deal when you can just reformat and resync w/in an hour or so.
