which cables to buy for Windows/USB/30GB IPod?

hi all,

i tried searching the forums for what i think must be a FAQ for sure, but the forums search actually said that "usb" is too short a keyword to search for!

anyways, i just bought a new 30GB Ipod. I have a WinXP machine with USB ports, to which i want to connect my new ipod. I realize i will have to wait for apple to release some sort of a firmware upgrade before i can use the ipod with usb on windows. Do i also need to buy a special usb cable? i checked on apple's website and they sell a $19 usb/firewire cable. But i dont have a firewire card. how does it work then? is there some other cable that apple will release this month?

thanks!

Why not just buy a firewire card? Its very fast.

I am looking for an adapter as well, so I can hook my ipod to my work machine. I have the 2nd generation ipod however.

This piece right here http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=M9126G/A , one end (the flat long end) is a propreitary connection that connects to the port on your iPod, then there are 2 other connectors in the rest of the cable, 1 is firewire and the other is USB. Use the USB to connect to your computer in your case.

The 2nd gen iPod appears to be firewire only AFAIK.

The 2nd generation pods only support firewire as far as I know.

The USB cable is not available as of yet so as dmarcus48 suggested...go the firewire route.

The adaptec 4300 is a magnificent card and at times you can find one on ebay for a superb price. I payed 28USD shipped for mine.

does this mean that the other half of the cable is useless? ie the firewire cable. will the ipod still sync and charge at the same time, using USB? i assume the dock has power input, which goes to the ipod?

thanks

akarnk:
No, USB does not charge the iPod unit. It is only for the transferring of data. All power will be off of your iPod's battery.

I called apple helpdesk because I was lead to believe during ordering that I could connect via USB. At the moment you can't ... the guy at the helpdesk told me that the USB cable that you need to purchase seperately is not available until end of June.

And let's not confuse our generations here folks:

1st & 2nd gen iPods: firewire only
3rd gen iPods: firewire & USB (eventually)

No power on USB though..remember that. Firewire is still a better route to go IMO.

You don't have to buy an expensive adaptec fw card, even if it's "magnificent"... either it works or it don't, so just buy a cheap card... I bought the cheapest available and it works perfectly.
