Ipod fried - looks like corrupt firmware! Help

 Desperate to get my music mobile

Tried to format the iPod HDD for Windows using Windows Updater 1.2.6 which launches automatically when I plug in iPod.

I select the "Restore" option & iPod goes into Disk mode and Update app task bar indicates firmware is being downloaded. "Do not disconnect" is displayed on iPod. Updater then asks me to disconnect iPod for firmware reflash to be completed. iPod dispalys "OK to diconnect" and so I disconnect and this is where it freezes for the next hour or two.

Have tried this same procedure a couple of times with same result

I now turn on my iPod and it shows a folder with an exclamation mark and it doesn't respond to any of the buttons...It looks like this iPod might be on its way back to Apple

Help! Anyone have a suggestion to get my iPod working?

You might have missed it, but the iPod needs to be connected to a power source to complete the restore.

Um, first off, this is one of the old iPods right? You're not putting the 1.2.6 firmware on a new iPod are you? That won't work.

Anyway, as long as it's a 1gen or 2gen iPod, do the restore again, when it says to disconnect it, do so, then connect it to the AC Adaptor and it should finish the restore.

I did connect iPod to power source after I disconnected, same error message.

This is one of the new iPods that have just been released...I downloaded what I thought was the latest software for Windows Updater from Apple support
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120119

Maybe I should uninstall Windows Updater 1.2.6 and use installation CD? Problem is I'm trying to avoid installing MusicMatch as I want to use EphPod instead.

No no. Apple has not released the updater for the newly released (gen 3) iPods on their website. It is only available on the CD that came with the iPod. From Adam's wonderful instructions:

1. Download ephpod (no, macopener isn't needed)
2. Put in the CD, cancel the setup process.
3. Click on My Computer. Right click the CD drive, select "Open".
4. Navigate the CD to this path (where D:\ is your CD Drive):

D:\Program Files\Apple\iPodUpdater\program files\WinRoot\iPod Updater\

In there will be a file called "Updater.exe".

5. Copy this file to your computer. Doesn't make any difference where, stick it on the Desktop so you remember where it is.
6. Connect your iPod. Run the Updater.exe file (double-click it)
7. Click on the "Restore" button, follow the instructions carefully.
8. You're done. You can now fire up ephpod, select the iPod drive letter that XP assigned the iPod and you're in business.
