Ipod encourages music purchase rather than discourage...

All,

I wanted to start a thread about this. I have had my ipod a week now and have already bought about 30 new cd's. Some I did not have and some if have re-bought because the CD was so old it did not rip very well.

I am also listening to some songs I have not heard in ages and will probably buy some more back catalogues of my favourite artists, now I can listen to them whenever I have a spare moment.

The music industry should be pleased, at least with my purchases (well, there was a sale at the HK HMV).

One question, I have not yet bought the Radiohead hailto the thief album, as I had downloaded some tracks from xolox, but intend to now. I was, however a bit disconcerted that the CD may be protected to stop ripping. Is this true?

If so, how many other albums are like this. I think it is crap that you can pay for a CD and then have someone else tell you how you listen to it.

Appreciate some other views on this last point and whether other ipod users feel they vabe bough more music since adopting (yes adopting as I believe we are only taking care of this baby until we can pass it on at some time in the future...when we upgrade he,he,he) our ipods.

Paul

Hail to the Chief is NOT copy-proof... I just downloaded the Album-wrap version and hey it works... so I doubt that copy protection can EVER stop ripping...

It sounds as though Hail to the Thief is only copy protected in certain countries. I bought the CD here in the UK and had no problem ripping it or playing it on any computers. I only album I've got that I can't rip at the moment is the latest Massive Attack album.

I definitely agree with you that file sharing/ripping/iPods etc encourage music purchase rather than discourage it. If I like a band or album I'll always want to buy the CD. I'm looking forward to trying iTunes Music Store one day (when its available on Windows and in the UK), but I can't see myself wanting to buy whole albums from their instead of buying the original CD.
