Need advice from mac folks

I'm having trouble with my Quicksilver again. Replacing the memory just dinna help with this.

So, my question is, if y'all have a tech support question, would you post in the actual Apple discussion forums or is there a better, friendlier place to go that you can refer me to?

Like, when folks have issues with their iPods, they come here instead of the official Apple forums; we're nicer. :D

So, where should I post my woes with my G4? Advice?

I find that Macdebate ( http://www.macdebate.com/6/ubb.x) is quite a good help.

How old is your G4? Do you not have Apple care? PM me the symptoms and if I can help, I will, though no promises.

Thanks guys, I'll check out Macdebate.

Jacko, It just freezes, dude. I've switched out the memory, as someone suggested, but it still just does it.

Used to only do it when I activated a "pretty" screensaver. Now, it's doing it consistently when I try to install OpenOffice. Mouse moves, but click as I might, nothing responds. The shortcut keys to kill programs don't work either. It might just be a bad apple.

(i dinna see that delicious pun until it was fully typed, heh!)

Just in OS X or in OS 9 as well?

How old is it?

Just in X. I haven't really used 9 at all since the last time I formatted it. There's a copyright on the label on the back of the unit that says 1999; Here's an About My Mac screenshot (http://www.acfsgroup.com/groupimages/ccr/AboutMyMac.jpg) and an Apple System Profiler screenshot (http://www.acfsgroup.com/groupimages/ccr/Profiler.jpg) (that somehow doesn't want to FTP up properly, hrmmph).

Kurt,

Your machine doesn't appear to be a QuickSilver (unless that's what you call it). The QuickSilvers came out in 2001 and were minimum speed of 733MHz. Looks like you have a Sawtooth or Yikes (Sawtooth's have an AGP graphics slot and Yikes have PCI graphics). I assume you've tried the obvious reinstall of Mac OS X?

Ahh, Butch, thankee for clearing that up... I had a feeling that I was wrong about that. (Remember, now, I'm not used to being able to identify a computer by it's name, hehe... Most of the systems I've had thus far I've built m'self, ;))

Aye, it's persisted across several reinstalls of 10.2, some with 9 present first, some without. Seems that every reincarnation makes it lock up for a different reason, too, oddly enough... like now, it's fine with the (simply incredible) screen effects, where two incarnations ago, it'd lock up every time I started one. Mayhap she's possessed, eh? Mayhap she knows there's a Windows guy holding the mouse and is being obstanant,

The machine itself is not work-essential, more of a pet I guess... matter of fact, my tech lead always gets testy when he sees me mutzing with it... he knows immediately that it's not work-related, heh. But if I'm ever gonna put in the effort to convince them to let me take her home, I'd like ta know that she won't freeze up all the bloody time. Sigh.

Oh, and aye, MacDebate seems... unbusy, heh. Good folks, from what I've read though. Mebby it's just me, but every time I go to a site with an iPod section in their forums, I think that they should just remove everything and put up a big ole link to the 'lounge, :D :D :D :D

Yeah, the people there are really nice. It's like a family.

And, iPod sub-forums, in general, are...um...lacking.

Kurt,

Now that I've looked at your System Profiler screenshot again, I can see you have a "Sawtooth" model, because it says "AGP Graphics". I don't see anything out of the ordinary in the screenshot. You've got the latest firmware installed, so that's a plus.

You could try just running with 512k memory to see if that produces different results. Or perhaps there is something else wrong with the machine (motherboard problem?). I think I've only seen OS X crash once on my machine throughout all it's versions (I have a 450MHz "Sawtooth"). And I've had various applications quit now and then, but the system has always stayed up. It's basically been pretty rock solid for me.

What about peripherals? Do you have any third party stuff attached?
