David Beckham has an iPod

I'm sorry to have to be the one to tell you all about this but David Beckham is in the week's Hello magazing in the UK in two photographs listening to his iPod while out running.

The only consolation is that he's still using the supplied headphones, so his reputation for dimness is not totally blown. And he's probably listening to some crap, isn't he, like maybe Victoria's demo tapes.

Well, was it a gen2 or a gen3? My first reaction was "well, time to ditch the ipod and get a Zen," but since by your post implies that he only has one ipod, I can simply avoid whichever gen he has...Yeah, I think I can live with that..

English footballer, there are lots of jokes about how stupid he is, married a Spice Girl (not the one who could sing), gets paid to wear stupid sunglasses with no frames, has become a media-hyped god figure, makes you feel sad about the state of humanity, if he has an iPod I don't want one, if he is the best we can come up with to worship I want to die.

Bang!

And to balance the cynicism and the trendy "Let's all hate Beckham" attitude, (and while fully acknowledging just how irritating the media coverage of his hair, fashion, etc. is) it's fair to point out that he is:

1) Sex on a stick to teen and pre-teen girls throughout Britain, Europe and Japan, yet also seems to be a 'nice young man' to their grannies, and a cool and trendy icon to their little brothers. He's the nearest thing to a 'rock star' and a celebrity that football has - like a clean-cut George Best for today, if you will. He doesn't do anything for me, but then....

2) Arguably the best footballer of his generation (with the best passing skills and an intuitive grasp of tactics and the flow of a game), and perhaps the best England captain for years. If he's more articulate with his feet than with his mouth, that's fine by me. He's a footballer.

3) A sportsman who (now he has reached maturity) conducts himself on the field with steady professionalism and dignity. As such he has become a great role model for kids. I'd sooner they worshipped him than Eminem or Marilyn Manson, or Liam Gallagher, or Tony Blair.

4) An honest, decent young man who enjoys his fabulous wealth and who is occasionally a bit of an arse, but who retains time for his fans, obviously loves his family and has an endearing passion for football, his team and his country, and who works hard and with great generosity for charity.

5) largely responsible for Manchester United's improved financial position, and for the resurgence of M&S in the youth market. He's a wealth and job creator, and an asset to his sponsors.

6) not nearly as dim as his cuttings might suggest, or as dull as televised interviews might seem to show. Friends on the sports desks of major UK broadsheet dailies have huge respect for the bloke.

It's easy to knock his silly sunglasses, his high pitched stilting voice, his Estuary accent, his talentless wife and that silly sarong, but he's worth a dozen of any of his knockers, IMHO.

Hmm...Do you mean to say that one of them could actually sing?

Jacko, you can stick up for Beckham all you want (and misspell behoove in the process--and here I thought that word had been banned from the English language; guess it just must have been in the U.S.--we're getting too many words here, and I think that was one of the first to go):D , but as far as I'm concerned, he's fair game.

Wow, Becks in the 'lounge!!
Doood, are you there?
Wonder what his username would be?

For me, it is disgusting the amount that these sportsmen get paid for kicking a ball around for 90 mins a week. I don't doubt that they should earn something but are they any more important than a nurse or a fireman or a teacher or a junior doctor on his/her 80 hr week?
No, they are the people who should be admired for working for a mere pittance instead of these people whose talent consists of their brain being able to communicate with their feet.
We have our priorities all wrong - he may be all of the things that Jacko has mentioned but does that make him more valuable than the important people in society.
(This is not aimed at Beckham alone - they are all as bad as each other)
Bob at 2007-11-15 18:17:59 >
# 11 Re: David Beckham has an iPod
Of course we under-value many of the most important and useful people in society, and of course we over compensate many of the least useful and least valuable, whether it's city traders, singers or footballers. However short their careers, it's patently both ridiculous and morally dubious that people like Beckham earn what they do. It's one of the most telling failures of unfettered free market capitalism that the nurses, teachers, junior armed forces personnel earn so little (and so much less than they are 'worth') while other groups earn so much.

But Palazzo wasn't making an intelligent point about society's priorities, he was taking a cheap shot (and not a terribly original one) at an easy target, and in doing so was impugning someone who we should perhaps have a modicum of respect for. Only a modicum, because all the adulation is ridiculous, and he's clearly a flawed character.

Contrary? Well, yes. Especially when people trot out trendy prejudices, engage in ill-thought but fashionable cynicism, or needlessly and arrogantly knock people (or anything else) who give others harmless pleasure. There's also a nasty whiff of envy about much of the coverage of Beckham, and I think people should perhaps be more honest to themselves about their motivation.

I'm comfortable that I'm brighter than Beckham, and though I'd like to be 30 again, and though I'd like to have enough hair to look that silly, and though I wouldn't throw Mrs B out of bed, and though I'd quite possibly kill for his bank balance and earnings, I'm not going to let my envy get the better of me, and I'm not going to stoop to sub-Tabloid, 'clever', 'Dead Ringers' criticism of the bloke.

Madpict,
Do you think he's bright or imaginative enough to use a username more obscure than davidbeckham? (Oh bollocks, I appear to be joining in!)

# 12 Re: David Beckham has an iPod
it?s of no importance whether he?s worth it or not. if people are willing to pay such sums, they?re all worth it imho. there are no people in society more important than others. each member plays his part. though i sometimes also shake my head at the salaries of sports, rock and movie stars, they give us (as in the whole of society) plenty of enjoyment and the dream of a life less ordinary. that?s something you can?t put a figure on.

Really? I think it's one of those American Independence things--I think we subconsiously, or consciously, changed the spelling of a bunch of words way back in the 1700's to assert our independence. Right before that big tea party thing...Well, I'll catch you in a grammatical error one of these days..

Hey, I noticed a marked increase in invective in your previous post--not offensive, mind you, but a definite improvement over the watered down Jacko I've been subjected to lately. Things are going in the right direction...

There are an ancient set of rules, discovered on stone tablets during the digging of the Suez canal, thought to be thousands of years old, which are sometimes referred to as "the playgound rules". They essentially make it clear that it is ok to make fun of anyone who is famous for frivolous reasons--we don't have to bother arguing wether Beckham is frivolous or not, because the next rule states that is perfectly acceptable, and actually encouraged, to make fun of anyone for any reason who is both famous AND rich.

And just because some of us make fun of him doesn't mean we're jealous, it's just that, well, we like to make fun of him..

And my suspicion is if Beckham is here, he'd probably get a laugh out of all this nonsense anyway...Aint' that right Beckham?

Talking of the tea party thing, we're getting a big BBC/Some US Channel series about the war of independence at the moment, fronted by one of our more intelligent tele-historians, a guy called Richard Holmes.

One very interesting point he makes is that it was much more of a civil war than is generally realised, and that loyalist forces within the colonies were bigger than is often realised.

It's not an aspect of history I've studied (my degree concentrated on the period since 1815, as did my A- and S-level exams) and I must say that I'm finding it most interesting.

The series isn't over yet, so I'm looking forward to finding out who won.....
Jackonicko at 2007-11-15 18:24:03 >
# 17 Re: David Beckham has an iPod
Sounds like a great series--let me know the name of it, I'll look for it here.

Two things that are glossed over in our grade school U.S. History texts (actually there are a bunch of things--it's really amazing, and dissapointing) is the point you made, and how indebted we are to the French for supporting us during the war, which essentially was the difference in gaining independence--a debt we never managed to repay, which, at least indirectly, had a role in creating the conditions leading to the French Revolution.

And BTW, we won (or perhaps, more accurately, we didn't lose), but we took a serious drubbing in the war of 1812, although historically we've managed to talk ourselves into declaring it a tie...

One time I asked a drunk Quebequois why all the French Canadians I met seemed to think more highly of the British, than the French. He told me (light heartedly I think) that the British had only ever done to Canada exactly what was expected of them: take it over. The French, however, had run away when the fight got tough: that was where the resentment came from :-)

Sounds like a good time to type "French Military Victories" into Google and hit "I'm feeling Lucky" :-)

The thought of Jacko with a hair bandy thing and a sarong...............shiver :D

Behove - I have been watching a documentary "Rebels and Redcoats - The Revolutionary Wars" with Prof. Richard Holmes of Cranfield University (he did some really interesting programmes called "War Walks" and other war progs) and there have been some extracts from diaries written at the time. Very interesting the old English language.

On why things are the way they are (color instead of colour) the American way of eating came up in conversation - you know cutting the food with the fork in the left hand, knife in the right, then swapping the fork to the right to put the food into your mouth.

I read that this was down to when the Pilgrim fathers landed they lost the crate with a lot of the knifes in. So they had more forks than knifes so they had to share knives, and so the practice of eating with just a fork came about. Good story and always a conversation stopper!!

Sorry thread hijack over - but I wonder if the Beckhams have staff to cut up their food... (back on topic!)

The thread's already discussed most of this to the point of a number of definitive opinions, but have to agree with the general point made by Jackonicko.

DB (as close friends are wont to call him) seems a decent fella with enough common sense (if not cerebral muscle flexing) to provide a perfectly good role model for younger fans (as Zoiderberg points out a lot more than 50 Cent who seems to be, at least partly, famous for surviving a shower of bullets - well done 50, now create something other than derivative, over-hyped rap).

DB also does his job, on and off the footabll pitch, very well (don't get me started on society over-paying the wrong people - rock stars/athletes are one thing but my particular axe to grind is with gold-gilted 'pros' like lawyers, accountants & traders; just wallet envy from an under-paid/valued scientist). And expecting footballers, or any sportsman, to come off the pitch and give a lucid, intelligent precis of the sweaty battle that's just taken place is ridiculous; yet the majority expect someone who has often had limited schooling from the age of 16 to suddenly wax lyric on something that even the highest paid sports journos would struggle to break beyond a babble of cliches under the same circumstances.

Just my 2 cents (a few more and 50 will be no more).

I cannot deny that DB is not a good role model, just as Gary Lineker was/is, and just as numerous other sports figures are.
If I had kids I would rather they look up to them than the likes of **** or any other foul-mouthed gangsta rapper.
It is just the value that is put on such sporting ability which I find hard to accept. It is not envy, as their wealth brings with it numerous disadvantages ( Being hustled through airports to waiting limos to prevent security risks to other passengers  )

dcbell: The S-levels were easy - they just measure aptitude for a subject and not how much of the curriculum you've worked hard learning. And since Prince Charles also has a Grade 1 History S level they can't be that hard.

But mentioning the degree wasn't modest. It wasn't a good one, I only just scraped honours - but then I did spend three days a week flying with my UAS, two days a week playing Rugby, and two days a week chasing women....

Beckham having an IPOD will do more for sales of it in England than any advertising campaign that Apple could mount. Unfortunately your average footy fan probably isn't too conversant with mp3 technology or computers for that matter.

As for Beckham, I say good luck to the guy. The money is ridiculous but he is one of the few players who probably earns more for his club than he is paid.

As for his intelligence, well he doesn't sound like Einstein but who am I to criticise someone who has built a career as successfully as him and who always conducts himself in a gentlemanly fashion.
