Flying Legends Airshow
Chris,
Have a looksee here (http://www.keypublishing.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13752) for some arrivals for the weekends show (http://www.fighter-collection.com/legends/).
I will have my camera with me, although the guy above takes some beating (Canon 10D) but if I sneak my iPod in there may be a pic for the gallery;)
The above forum actually should have a lot more pics of the weekend if you want to get a taste of the airshow.
I know its not everyones cup of tea, but I know there are a couple of folk around here who like these old warbirds and have an interest in photography so sorry if anyone finds the subject boring or even offensive.

Wow if someone finds this offensive, they should have their heads checked.

Timmy,
Some folk find war offensive, and the idea of celebrating war in any form, equally offensive. I can understand that.
I prefer to look at it as using it to honour those who fought for freedom, and ensuring that we never forget our history.
Someone once said "Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it..."
A lot of these aircraft have ben rebuilt from piles of scrap and it is great see them in the air instead of in dusty museums.

Bob,
I know people find war offensive, but the way you said it sounded like people taking offense to the air show. I for one like seeing older airplanes. I do like your take on it, as an honor to those who have fought. It is cool to see them in flight.

I for one do find airshows offensive. And I'm here to gripe about it.
I mean, c'mon. It's not the waste of petrol, the crashes, the dead or injured pilots or even the killing or maiming of innocent bystanders that happen from time to time. There are other tragedies that happen at air shows, they are very dangerous.
My uncle for instance was injured at an airshow. Not by falling debris or anything like that. He tripped on the tarmac--but it really hurt him. He had to use a cane for, er, like a whole week.
Scarred me for life I can tell you. Happened when I was just five. Still remember that Christmas seeing Uncle Milt shuffling around the tree, tripping on presents. Couldn't even stand up for more than 10 minutes.
Or was that the Egg Nog....
Hm, may have to rethink this....
:D

Adam,
You failed to mention the risk of choking to death - not funny, and it happened to me. I was the victim of a rather gristly Philly Steak Sandwich, a bit of which got stuck. It was touch and go, and nearly robbed this forum of a member!
Needless to say I stick to liquid refreshment now - especially the amber nectar!! ;)

Enjoy Duxford this weekend Bob. I'm taking a well earned break from bloody aeroplanes - especially old ones!
Book in progress.....

Thanks Bob!! Those are awesome--love the Hurricane. I'd love to see one of those in person--we never get those at the EAA though.
What is the twin engine, British markings, second picture down?
I'll (hopefully) have a digital camera soon, and get some pics of the EAA linked somewhere--starts at the end of the month..
What I really wish I could do is tape some of the lectures for you though--the Tuskeegee airmen, Chuck Yeagher, Bud Anderson--those guys are fascinating--you leave with a sense of awe after listening to them...

Chris,
It's a Bristol Blenheim - the only flying example in the world.
Sadly the show today was marred by the crash of the Fairey Firefly killing both crew members.

Oh man, sorry to hear that. There was a huge crash here at the EAA during the airshow a couple of years ago (Involving a corsair), everyone miraculously survived, but one of the people involved was in the hospital for a year. I was supposed to go to the airshow that day, but fortunately I missed it. Pretty much ruined the rest of the week...

Chris,
Was that the one where the 2 Corsairs ran into each other?
I was supposed to have gone today but just didn't feel like it in the end - so no pics this year as today was going to be the photo day.
Knowing two crew died takes the enjoyment out of the whole event. :(

Yes, it was the two corsairs--the pilot of one of them was given the green light while there was an idling aircraft halfway down the runway in front of him--as you know, you can't see anything directly in front of you/underneath you in a Corsair taking off...The pilot's life has essentially been ruined from his injuries.
My condolences--I've never witnessed an aircraft accident, but I remeber how I felt when the accident happend at the EAA--I can't imagine how bad it would to see one, and I sincerely hope I never do...
