iSightlounge

iPoding beat us to the punch, but what do you think about an iSightlounge? Compelling enough to dedicate a website to it? We've thought about this since the iSight debuted, but wasn't sure about it. I'd like your opinions, ideas and/or suggestions.
Thanks
Dennis

I think that for starters, for them to choose the 'Lounge tag is morally dubious, if not downright dishonest. (On the basis that they're 'passing off' their site as being linked in some way to this one).

As for the need for a separate forum for users? I don't see it myself, though I would see a need for a digi-cam Lounge, or even a more general MacLounge.

I'm not so sure that the necessary demand would be there to make the site viable. Having watched the iChat AV/iSight demo at the WWDC, what struck me was that while it was technically (and aesthetically) impressive, it's hardly revolutionary. It's not like iChat AV is the first video chat software out there, after all. Please note that I'm not a Mac user, so I can't testify as to the quality of iChat AV nor the camera itself.

I am however left wondering what the big fuss is about, as I've been doing video chats on MSN Messenger for Windows for well over a year, and providing you've got a decent internet connection it works very well. As much fun as it is though, it's not worth starting a website dedicated to it - at least not in my opinion.

What do folks think about a genral "Mac digitial hub" sister site? One site and set of forums for iPod, another for the remaining "Mac only" stuff - iPhoto, iDVD,iMovie, iChat, etc.?

One good thing about the iPodlounge, is that it is not platform specific. PC and MAC users can both share in the joy of being iPod users in harmony! I don't think it is a good idea. If you did a specific maclounge maybe and kept the ipodlounge completely seperate from that then it might work!

I think that's the general idea, ToddW. A sister site, separate from the iPodlounge, but under the same umbrella of Dennis' brilliance, web design, and care. :)

Wow, Caterinka is much too kind...

iSightlounge: gather, connect, share... member profiles, interests, etc. News, forums (get to know each publicly forums, hardware, software, usage forums), reviews? (possibly hardware/software), iChat directory of users?, offline/online status, screencaps of the day, iSights around of the world, featured member profiles, giveaways?, ...

As iTunes supports Windows soon, iChat might do so as well. The iSight may also be able to work on Windows through custom drivers?

Keep those ideas/thoughts/suggestions coming...

Thanks

P.S. Maclounge and iLifelounge could 'happen' as well.

Pre-qualification: This reply should probably be split off into a new thread.

I can understand iTunes being ported to windows...but...please help an iChat ignoramus understand why PC's need another webcam/video conferencing app? I'm confused as to what makes iChat unique over the other solutions out there...this is probably do to a huge lack of ed. on my part regaridng iChat.

Well, for one thing, iChat lets me use my AIM (AOL Instant Messanger) account from my iBook without installing any AOL software. Given AOL's obtrusiveness on my WinNT machine at work when I installed their AIM client, this is a "good thing", IMHO.

And, there may be other generic, non-AOL AIM clients for Windows out there that I am not aware of. If so, then I am just showing my huge lack of education, eh? ;)

Hmmm, I don't know about iSightLounge... Personally, for me, the reason I visit this site is because its a place where windows and apple ipod users can converse, intermingle, and yes, beat each other senseless. So, there is a great feeling of community here, an site for iSight, which is just a webcam isn't really all that inventive, there are already hundreds if not thousands of webcam communities already thriving, to add another (especially one dedicated to the insignificant iSight) to the assortment of websites out there seems pointless. Why not just add a webcam feature to this already wonderful website and leave it at that...

I've been playing around with it... capturing video and all...

Add me to the list of people that doesn't understand iChat or the iSight camera. I have been using an Intel Webcam on my PC for YEARS and iChat is nothing special for sure. I use GAIM (third party chat) on the PC which has tabbed converstation windows and lets you use your username from all the different chat clients in one program. Not too mention that I don't even use my iMac for the internet very often because it is just too slow compared to my PC and also fonts are just too difficult to read for long periods of time compared to my CRT monitor on the PC.

On top of all that the price of the iSight is way too high! I understand that most Mac stuff is but I don't see why the iSight would be worth it.

There are a lot of theories (check the front page, f'rinstance) about why Jobs has decided to introduce iSight, including input to your iPod.

# 14 Re: iSightlounge
i would say that a general interest mac site (or at least not as specific as one product, like the isight) sister site would be ok, i like the coverage ipodlounge does, if you could carry that over to another site that would be good.

it would have to be very seperate from this site though, you have a good thing going on with this site and it not being having a crazy mac or pc bent.

as for the isight, i think it is going to be a good product, and much needed, but i don't see it being the killer app the ipod has become. i see it being something that comes bundled with your new mac, and at one point gets built right into the case, just becoming a part of the computer experience.

Tom,

For your windows machines, check out Trillian (http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/trillian/index.html) -- it's an instant message client that runs virtually all protocols, allowing you to have your MSN, AOL, IRC, and Yahoo chat lists all running from one program, one interface. It's nice... and the best way to speak to AOL folks on a Windows machine without installing AOL's software.

I'm pretty much in agreement with folks on this one, though... it's just another voice/video client, and another webcam. The iPod is in a league of its own as far as digital music players go, but the iSight? As a Windows user, I have an overwhelming "so what?" feeling about it.

I know why it's exciting for Mac users. It's designed by Apple, the same folks that make your hardware, software, and operating system. It will work flawlessly, and it will integrate perfectly with several other apps that you use (which also work flawlessly) -- That's one of the main reasons that people buy Apple, I've heard.

Hehe, just watch out a year from now when they release the Gen3 and y'all can't use it's features on the Gen1 and Gen2 iSights, :P :P

PS: The best webcam available is, without a doubt, a JVC or Sony or "Brand X" digital camcorder, attached via firewire. Awesome resolution, zoom, focus, and so on. Shoot for one that's over the $600 mark, and you've got an OUTSTANDING webcam, as well as a nice digital camcorder. I had a JVC dvl-310u, it's currently about $400, and it worked flawlessly with XP and MSN Messenger. Great quality, too.

Kurt, you summed it up for me too. As an avid owner of trillian...and occasionally a user of GAIM...I can understand one's desire to not use the MSN or AIM clients.

Ah, well, if that's what iChat A/V is (a multi-platform IM client with vid chat) then I think a web site for it would be cool. While not revolutionary really, still a cool concept on any platform...and it sounds like another good move by Apple (Safari was an awesome move and this will be too).

# 18 Re: iSightlounge
I don't really know what the plan is for the iSight and iChat but in the past other webcam communites online have been overrun with lots of "Adult" type connections. In order to get full use of the iSight and get people to use it more they probably need some sort of web community which like I said would probably foster a lot of "Adult" video chats.

Also, thanks for the tip on using a Firewire Digi Cam, I have a Sony that I never thought of using like that. May have to try that out.
