Powerbook G5?

I lost the Powerbook G4 I was bidding for on ebay. Now that I'm not obligated to buy (since I made my bid before I knew about the G5's), should I go look for another G4 laptop or wait to see if Apple comes out with a Powerbook G5?

I suspect it'll be a while bfore they introduce a g5 powerbook. They're going to have to deal with some serious heat issues (remember how hot the first g4 PBs ran?)

Great, then I should be safe with buying a powerbook now. Thanks for your help ;)

This is my first time owning a mac (a switcher?? no, just someone who has used both windows and mac os for ages). If I'm looking to buy a used powerbook on ebay, which ones can I assume will run very hot?

i second that notion, although, if you are looking for a 15inch, there are rumors of it being updated sooner, rather than later.

although, that depends on your idea of "soon" it could be up to 4-6 months away.

Thanks for the tip. I'm not too sure if I should wait. Even if I'm not going to go for an updated version, waiting until they are released could mean somewhere around a $100 savings.

well, another day you wait is always going to be another day closer till a newer-better version is released.

but, it is also another day less that you could be enjoying the product, and getting your money out of it.

if you need it now, buy it, unless you have news you believe (NOT FORUM RUMORS) that a new product is coming out within a timeframe you can stand.

Don't forget that the Powermac G5 isn't even out until August (and knowing Apple, that could slip :)). So the earliest conceivable time I could imagine a G5 Powerbook coming out would be January.

My sentiments agree pretty much with dean0's, for once. :D

well the g5s only come out in august so i bet it will be at least three months after that they come out with a powerbook g5, but now that i think about it u could be right about january, announce it with the rest of the new year products

The next product due for a refresh has to be the iBook.......

Hmm Jacko, I'm not so sure about that. The iBook line was only given a speed bump a month or so ago up to 900Mhz. Apparently IBM have recently confirmed that they will be making a 1.2Ghz G3 processor, which would be the natural next step for the iBook.

I imagine the next step will be to bump the iMac line up, as Apple need to get the G5 into the consumer market as soon as they can. The iBook, the low-cost consumer laptop, will surely be of less importance than both the iMac and Powerbook, both of which (I assume) hold much greater profit margins.

The white iBook hasn't had a facelift since the clamshell iBook. Maybe it doesn't need one. Maybe Apple will be happy that white=consumer and aluminium=pro, and we're in for a period of stability, with speed and spec improvements but with no great changes in form and appearance.

In terms of need, then I'd guess that the Powerbook G4 needs a speedbump now that it's nominally (GHz myth, I know) slower than the 900 MHz iBook.

And maybe Apple now need a new 'bottom end' product to snare new consumers and to compete with Dell.

Or maybe an iJotter will be next?

ouch mike!!

just saw an article on www.powerpage.org, the we shouldn't be expecting g5 laptops for awhile. guess they are going to update the 15 inch, and just do some tuning for a year or so

# 13 Re: Powerbook G5?
the next logical step ...

1. Make PowerBooks G5
2. Make iBooks G4
3. Make Xserves G5

that way ... the iMac, eMac and iBook (consumer) are all G4 ... and the PM, PB and Xserve (pro) are all G5 ...

and there have been two versions of "white" iBook ... first with clear covers (white paint on inside) and silver (aluminium) handrest ... the second has solid white covers and a white handrest (plastic?)
