Link's broken on the .Mac page.

:( It worked for me. And landed me right here ( http://www.mac.com/1/pantherpreview.html) . Maybe that will work for you.
# 3 Re: Panther Peek
Yeah, that works. Thanks!
Interesting modification to the Finder window.

It looks like they're updating the Apple Store for the G5s. You can't get in right now.
# 5 Re: Panther Peek
i like the user centric finder, makes sense that if i am logged in, i should be able to find all my stuff right away

# 6 Re: Panther Peek
Does anyone know if it will work on any previous G4?
# 7 Re: Panther Peek
I'm betting it will work on Macs that can run OS X, since it's not going to be a whole new OS XI .
# 8 Re: Panther Peek
But it's a 64 bit OS, isn't it? It will be backwards compatible?
# 9 Re: Panther Peek
since they announced panther before the G5's, and the G5's come with Jaguar, i would think that Panther is not a G5 specific OS.
will it work well with older model G4s? will most likely see a perfomance hit, you always do with a whole point system upgrade, but i'm betting since they are still trying to push OS X hard, they will try to make it work as well as possible. i only have a g4 400mhz powerbook, i'm hoping hard too that it'll work good, it looks pretty sweet!

Yes, it will work on G4s... although maybe slower on older G4s.

That's what so increible about it. The OS and all the apps will work on 32-bit or 64-bit processors. :D:D

anyone have any idea how panther is gonna run on the G3? i have an 800mhz ibook. if jaguar is faster i may as well keep it since there's not really much new stuff in panther that's relevant to anyone without a G5...

I asked this very question of an Apple Store employee just yesterday when I was at the Apple Store in Atlanta to pick up a Belkin car charger & a spare FW --> dock cable for my iPod. I'm more poorly positioned than you are, d33t3r, as I have a 600 MHz G3 iBook. Jaguar runs fine on it (a little slow, sure, but acceptable for what I do) and I want to upgrade to Panther if at all possible.
He said that they have not yet heard minimum system requirements from Apple for Panther. But, he did say that the minimum specs for iSight were a 600 MHz G3, and that since iSight support was built into Panther and the new iChat, this might bode well.
A bit of a stretch, perhaps, but I remain hopeful - I won't be in the market for a new Powerbook or PowerMac any time soon (although, with the announcement of the new G5 PowerMacs, the current line of G4 PowerMacs has gotten downright affordable, IMHO! ;)).

awesome, the atlanta apple store? that's where i got my ipod :)
but do you really see enough new stuff in panther to warrant upgrading? i gotta say, i've loved the ibook much more than our dell pc, but apple just infuriates me with the CONSTANT os x upgrading. it's ridiculous. every month i have to download a new 80mb upgrade, and every 10 months you have to PAY to get a newer version. at least windows does updates in moderation, and you can rest assured that your OS will be around for two years.
as for the powermac G4, go for it!! even if there is something newer out, those things are still #### fast. and i find it really interesting that the MSRP for the incoming dual 2ghz G5 is lower than the MSRP for the outgoing dual 1.25ghz G4.
