Thinking of Expatriating!

So... it's been a weird ride for me lately, and I've had a lot of time to think about "the way things are gonna be" -- and one of the thoughts that I had was:

Why not just pack up and move to another country? Nothing stopping me from doing it, really. I could just sell the house, cash out everything, pick up, and settle down in some far away foreign land! I'm an I.T. guy, so (markets nonwithstanding) I can find work in pretty much any metropolitan area... so long as there's computers there.

So, dear iPodloungers, where should I go? If I decided to go, that is... what city, what country should I move to? I'm pretty much open to anything, but I want to hear suggestions from a worldwide audience.

You'll have to make quite an argument if you're going to suggest the middle east or the far east, though... Asia is pretty much out, I think, but if you can convince me, I'd like to hear it.

And you can't use the argument of "Country X has the best-looking women in the world!" because c'mon... I can't argue with that. I mean, it's not like the fairer gender won't be somewhat of a factor in my decision, but I ain't playin favorites. :D

What do you think? Where shall I roam? :)

Boulder, CO. It's like another country and you'd be very employable in my neck of the woods.

There would be an untold number of benefits. ;) It's a lovely city. Lots of hiking, climbing, biking, good bars, great local music, and the sort of birkenstock/spandex/yuppy atmosphere that's more fun than most places.

The UK! Cuz they have uber cool accents there, and from what i've seen really good tv! And it's supposed to be really pretty! And london seems really cool! And they got really cute guys! And the females are probably not bad at all either! And whoever your lover will be he/she will have a sexy british accent how hot would that be when your sleeping with them and they talk naughty to you with that sexy accent?

(I should know, I have tons of fantasies about duncan making love to me and talking to me with his sexxxxy voice..:o)

im gonna go to the uk in the summer vacation so i'll tell u what it was like ey? :)

Keep it real!

(normally I wouldn't say that but I just heard duncan say it so it must be cool so I gotta copy it!!  )

Kurt,

Where ever you go (My vote would be for Sydney, Australia--can't go wrong there, especially when it comes to the fairer gender), I'm sure you'll be fine--but please don't get a roomate; shipping expenses to Australia (or wherever) are just god-awful...:D

Aww that's cool! The netherlands is a good place to live I suppose... It's like.. dutch.. lol..

I dunno I'm just kinda bored with it cuz I've lived her all my life and all..

wouldnt reccomend it tho, it doesnt really have pretty envirements imo.. well maybe it's just me and being bored with it.. I dunno (i think france aint all that either sooo... i dunnooooo)

Overall (from my experiances anyway) the people are really accepting and nice tho, so that's a plus I suppose. They're a little boring imo tho... And our music is ####ty! But you'll be listening to the same music anyway im sure so that probably dont matter..

And we have subtitles for english programs on tv, so that might be annoying for u..

just so u know france and spain and italy (i think) and some others (germany 2 I think) dub most of their tv programs, so that might be a turn off??

u might wanna considder going to a long vacation somewhere before actually moving there?? i mean it's a big step??

I so cannot believe that a couple of you have categorised the "UK Accent".

England itself must have twenty or thirty dialects, maybe even more. And believe me, most of them are very very different to the Queen's English.

Compare Ozzy Osbourne to John Lennon, Liam Gallagher to Thom Yorke. Their speaking voices, I mean, obviously.

Maybe I'm tainted, as I am English, but the accent just isn't that wonderful here. It's lovely to hear someone speaking the language in the aristocratic manner, even for me. But none of us common people do - trust me here, I am one. For the record, I speak with a slightly toned down version of Ozzy Osbourne's accent, as my home town's about fifteen miles from Birmingham, Ozzy's hometown.

Now give me a Dutch accent any day - for some reason I find it the most pleasant to listen to of any accent I've heard.

PS - Kurt, don't forget how much more expensive everything is here. Then remember you'll be taxed at least double what you are now. It's not a decision to be taken lightly.

Well of course there are a lot of reasons to choose mainland Europe

1) It is the home of great trip-hop-and-all-the-alternatives that exist
2) All the big names give regular concerts (dare I say I saw portishead in concert with p.j. harvey and sofa surfers all in one gig!)
3) Austria is extremely safe - no paranoid locking of doors, car alarms or burglar proofing (yes, sob, less criminality)
4) great coffee houses
5) progressive-minded people especially in IT - we are all techie freaks here
6) the cultural life is tops (museums, ancient cities, history)
7) For nature buffs there's the alps to ski in, woods in walk in and lakes to swim in
8) great urban spaces with architecture to die for
9) cheap and good international cuisine (including an invitation to my house for a good curry if you like)
10) PROXIMITY to all the great other cities there are in Europe - my hubby and I choose a city to explore every year. We've done Amsterdam, London, Budapest - btw Venice is 6 hours away!!!

there are probably more reasons but you'll have to discover them for yourself :-)

Yea the queen's nice I suppose.. and I'm sure they're annoying dialacs but that's true in most countries.. Personnaly we have some dialacts here in Holland I don't even understand, it's like a tottaly different language here:eek:

and so far what I heard from actors, british tv shows, and ofcourse the boys from blue I like most british accents..

not saying there's not really bad ones mind u

So true of many other countries with a lot of socialist-like government programs.

Don't know why you'd want to leave the U.S., Kurt, but I was going to suggest New Zealand.

But the taxes there are outrageous as well.... :(

Tom

EDIT: P.S., I am not being judgemental with my "socialist-like government programs" comment, just matter-of-fact. So, please - no one take offense as none was intended. Thank you! ;)

Also, my intent was not to start a political debate, nor a U.S. vs. any other country, government, or ideology debate, especially in light of the ban on political commentary and debate in iPodlounge.

:gee, maybe I should just delete this post! Nah, I'll leave it - we want Kurt to stay here! :):

To be honest, Australia is nearly my #1 choice, for a number of factors. I'd totally be up for Austria (but not Germany... dunno why, just a gut feeling, hehe) or Iceland too.

My #1 choice so far would be to move to Ibiza and forget that the rest of the world exists. Sigh... Don't think that'll ever happen though.

Though there is the far-off country of Boulder, CO... :)

Seeya tomorrow folks, I'm outta here!

Alls I gots to say is you need to go to Canada baby! If I were to move to another country it would be there. Here are a list of my reasons:

1. Their strip clubs - Total Nakedness.;)
2. Their music - They have a TON of great bands that come out of Canada.
3. Their beer - Some of the finest brewerys up there.
4. Their mountains - Their ski resorts are Top Notch.

Well as you can see these are not too convincing, but if you move here to Buffalo, you can still get a taste of it.:D

But the coolest part about Buffalo is me. :D

Ok, going to take Timmy's points in order (Oh, BTW, this is not intended to irritate the Canadians in any way, shape, or form, except for one or two French canadians, who weren't very nice to me the last time I was in Canada--you know who you are...)

1. Strip Clubs: It's a well known fact that as you travel north, the average weight of the population increases proportinately. I live in Wisconsin, where the average person weighs 437 pounds. Extrapolate this to Canada, and I think you begin to see the potential danger at a strip club, where swinging appendages have been rumoured to leave patrons of such establishments unconcious for hours, and sometimes days, at a time.

2. Their Music: Ok, Canada does has some pretty wild polka bands, gotta concede the point here...

3. The beer: Did you ever see the movie "Strange Brew?" Since that movie, I've pretty much sworn off Canadian beer...

4. The mountians: Those are all fake. I saw this special on 20/20 on how the canadians put up all these fake mountains to lure american tourists--I mean there's no smog or nothing--obviously fake...You guys really need to come up with something better, like we Americans--you know, something like the "Corn Palace" in South Dakota, now that's true beauty...

Or the Giant Ball of String (http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/MNDARtwine.html), in Darwin, Minnesota. Can't forget about that! :D :D. Now that's some tourist attraction.

Actually Kurt, why not expand your horizons a little. I mean Europe? Austria? That's cold man. Let's talk someplace warm. I'm thinking Tahiti or Bora Bora. Now we're talkin'. I'm sure they would have use for your skills. Heck, networkin' coconuts can't be that much more difficult than configuring routers etc. ;)

ROFLMAO!! to both Chris and Adam. You guys are great.

Adam,

Your stringy ball thingy pales in comparison to this:

http://drs.yahoo.com/S=2766679/K=corn+palace/v=2/SID=e/l=WS1/R=1/SS=51832500/H=0/*-http://www.cornpalace.org/cornpalace.html

Now THAT'S a true masterpiece...In fact, I think when the stringy ball thingy goes on tour, this is one of it's stops--Now, do you see the Corn Palace, on the other hand coming to the stringy ball thingy?? I think not...

Hey, come to think of it, maybe Kurt could rent an apartment in the Corn Palace...Now that would be cool, not to mention you'd pretty much have an endless supply of high quality vegetable oil..

OK, Chris, you've got me beat. The Corn Palace reigns supreme.

I like the idea of the rentin' a room in the Corn Palace too. You know that oil has other uses Kurt. Makes a great, er, *ahem*, lubricant for like, well your tractor or somethin. ;)

OMG Chris, that was a funny post! I have actually considered Canada... it's pretty close by and they've uh... got some nice laws.

I don't think I'll be using strip clubs as criteria, though, guys... in my experience, a lapdance is just a terrible investment. ;)

Upon further reflection, I am outraged at Kurt's previous post. I thought there was an understanding that the only person allowed to be bashed in this thread was Kurt. Then Kurt deviously defends himself, and turns the tables on us, and put us on the defensive. This simply cannot be tolerated. So, gloves are off, and in an effort to get this thread back on topic, I throw out this:

How many Kurt's does it take to change a light bulb?

Answer: ten and a half.

Kurt #1: True Value Kurt
Kurt #2: Ace Hardware Kurt
Kurt #3: Home Depot Kurt

Ok, these three Kurt's will get the parts to build the light socket. Would this particular Kurt just buy a light socket? Heck no--he'll want to build it from scratch, and tinker with it, in an effort to make it cheaper, and better.

Kurt#4: Researcher Kurt: This Kurt will be online getting the instructions to build the light socket.

Kurt#5: Library Kurt: Because Kurt is off the internet at dusk, he'll need an assistant at the library to work on this simultaneously.

Kurt#6: Assembler Kurt: The Kurt that will actually put the thing together.

Kurt#7: Light Bulb Kurt #1: This Kurt will buy the lightbulb.

Kurt#8: Light Bulb Kurt #2: This Kurt will go to the store after realizing Light Bulb Kurt #1 bought an Audigy light bulb, when what Kurt REALLY needed was and Adaptec light Bulb.

Kurt#9: Networking Kurt: Kurt will want this thing networked not only to a light switch, but to his computer and TV remote as well as his ipod

Kurt#10: Turn on Kurt (there's alot I could do with this, but in the interest of civility I'm going to leave it alone). This Kurt will actually turn the light on. But, wait, it took all day to make this thing, and it's time for Kurt to go out carousing, so, Kurt uses his duplicator to make a miniKurt (took a little poetic license from Austin Powers and Calvin and Hobbes here).

Kurt 10 and one half: This is the duplicated miniKurt in charge of turning it on.

# 34 Re: Thinking of Expatriating!
Considerations:
1) Language/culture. Are you proficient enough to want to live your life in (say) French or German, and for watching TV still to be relaxing and fun when it's all in a different language.
2) Is it a good place to be American? Australia probably is, New Zealand maybe less so. The UK and the Netherlands are still good, as is Poland, but France/Germany/Spain/Italy maybe less so.
3) Climate.
4) Employment. Plenty of IT jobs over here. And everywhere, I'm sure.
5) Narrow your sights. Don't think about the UK or Australia, try to think more locally. Melbourne is very different from Sydney, London is very different to Manchester, Cambridge, Oxford or Bath. What kind of place do you want to live in?

My final advice would be to 'suck it and see' before making the big decision, and to ask yourself exactly what's motivating you to want to pull up your roots and move somewhere. Moving for positive reasons is a great idea - moving because you're bored with where you are, or simply running away to make a fresh start may not solve whatever the underlying problem is.

But if you come over to the UK, then at least you'll have Madpict and I as your first friend and first nemesis......

Aye, thanks for that post, Jack. The whole idea of picking up and moving is still, at the end of the day, just a lark. It'd be nice to see Europe, though.

I agree on the language part for sure. Germany is pretty darn close to the bottom of the list for this reason in particular, even though I know that much of the world speaks English, I couldn't live where everyone's speaking German. French, maybe, Italian maybe, but not German. :D (No offense, Prithvi!)

Have been out on the road, reporting on the 'Merchants of Death'. Paris sounds so glamorous, but surly, arrogant, anti-British Parisians spoil the place a tad, and my hotel was a complete hole. Worked from 0645-21.00 or 22.00 every day, too, but did get stories on the front page two days out of five, and worked with a really great bunch of guys and girls. Was working very intensively before Paris, with a book deadline and a lot of extra work flowing from all the post mortems which followed the war. Thus very little time for normal life, Lounging, etc.

# 45 Re: Thinking of Expatriating!
No expert on these things but, as per usual, Jackonicko's advice seems sound.

For what it's worth I spent a 6 month round-the-world trip taking in Thailand, Oz, New Zealand, Cook Islands, US and Ca(Que)nada, though a little outdated being nearly 8 yrs ago (ouch, Father Time's hitting hard etc.). Of the places visited NZ's South Island was the most beautiful, picturesque place I visited.
However, Sydney was the only place I considerded I could live in: one of the few places in the world where you have a decent metropolitan lifestyle and all that entails (culture, bars and yes, highly presentable ladies [and lads]) whilst being surrounded by the outdoors and beach life.

Further to those long memories I've lived in London (5 yrs), NYC (2.5yrs) and my girlfriend lives in Berlin.

I loved and still love London. Fantastic cultural possibilities, very cosmopolitan and despite the stereotype the weather's actually pretty good (far milder than the freezing lows and humid highs of NYC, for instance).

NYC's been very close and an easy cultural shift from London. Bars, music scene and oodles of attractive ladies - this place has it all if you don't mind living in a shoe box with a view of the next appartment's exterior wall.

Berlin would've been way down my list. However I'm really sold on it. The standard of living for a highly paid IT fella like yourself would be good: you could bar it every night of the week, live in a spacious bachelor pad overlooking the River Spree and update your iPod at every whim . The atmosphere is very open and easy going. The language wouldn't be a problem either: most people you'll come into contact with will have good conversational English, and more than happy to practice their stuff, unlike the hardened Parisians. The winter's, however, are harsh (though not really much cooler than NYC) and long (4-5months basically).

Personally, my thoughts are turning to San Francisco (again a pretty good music/club/bar scene, culturally OK and stunning natural beauty all around you) but this is only based on a couple of shorts stays. Tokyo sounds interesting, cultuarlly mind-exapnding for a westerner, and with your potential flexibility could be sampled for a year and then decided upon at the end of your triall year.

Phew, sorry so long ... hopefully more help than heavy eye-mud to trudge thro' ... all the best with your decision process.

Well, ok, I exaggerated a little there...But the part about it being my 2nd ipod to malfunction in 6 months is true--should get ipod number three, a gen3 30 gigger, Monday or Teusday, courtesy of Best Buy's PSP.

What happend this time is Kurt did something to my Ipod's HD so that it is no longer recognized by my 'puter. I was worried that it was my firewire card, but it has worked perfectly in the past...It was otherwise working fine--just not recognized by my computer, and I genuflexed every which way I could think of, and even invented a couple of new positions in the process, none of which worked (but at least I now have a few ideas for my next romantic getaway). Then, this morning it just completely quit--after about two hours, despite a full charge. If I hook it into the adapter, I can still listen to it (hopefully it will hold out until I get the new one). Very weird, but Kurt is very clever when it comes to ipod vandalism...

BTW, good call on the Steely Dan album--picked it up the other day; it's like slipping on a comfortable pair of old shoes...

Calgary, Alberta, Canada! The Greatest City in The World!
Kurt, I can think of no place better for you to move than Calgary. The friendly small town atmosphere full of big city amenities is just the beginning of all that Cowtown offers. We are one of the sunniest places on earth (more sun than any other Canadian location) with the most beautiful spring, summer and fall weather anywhere. And even winter isn't half bad, especially with our world class skiing and snowboarding. Banff is barely an hour away, Canmore even closer. And you can see the beautiful mountains from downtown. Calgary also boasts the highest educated populace of any Canadian city (more people with university degress than anywhere else) and Alberta is one of the best educated provinces or states in all of North America. So you don't have to worry about meeting any dumb blondes here.;) If you're into sports Calgary has professional hockey, football, triple A baseball, a lacrosse team, and even a soccer team. We have world class skating facilities thanks to the Winter Olympics of 88, and more parks and green spaces than any other major Canadian city. The music scene is very vibrant. Right now we're in the middle of our annual Folk Music Festival-with artists ranging from Elvis Costello to Ani Difranco. And if you like to eat, Calgary's new seafood eatery, Catch, was recently named Canada's best new restaraunt. We also have an extensive array of ethnic restaurants ranging from Indian to Morrocan to our famous Chinese establishments. And of course there's our famous Alberta Beef, certified Mad Cow free, of course.:)
The job sector here is excellent with the lowest unemployment rate in Canada. The low taxes, i.e., no sales tax are also an attractive incentive. And don't worry about fnding Mac stores, Calgary has a bundle.
And of course there's the Greatest Outdoor Show On Earth, The Calgary Stampede, where we show off our city's great western past.
If your're looking to fit in with the locals, Calgary is home to more Americans than anywhere in Canada. 8% of us hail form south of the border. So if you ever get lonely, you'll have tons of other Yanks to reminisce with.
If all this doesn't impress you, remember, there's always Free Health Care!
Come to Calgary, and be happy! I am.:)

This aint outta the country, but sumtimes it may seem like it!
Yes im talking about fabulous South Dakota!! HAHA its not as bad as it sounds... WELL... maybeee it is, but look at it this way, rather than have to learn a new language, you just have to learn a funny accent! Now me, livin in SD's second largest city(WOOHOO) have not developed the accent. But, move into the rural area, and in no time youll be able to pick up the hilarious dialect of these crazy people. I mean, I live hear, but I still someimtes have a hard time not laffing when someone says "well i reckon" and they arent jokin...
