Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
!!!HELP!!!
I have recently noticed that my music comming out of my IPOD was messed up so i re-set my IPOD but it was still messed. So i thought it was my head phones so i un-pluged them and changed them to another pair, still messed. So, I changed them back... I was shocked to see that the headphone jack was broken off. This was the cause of my sound problem. So let me get to the point I was wondering if the warranty would cover this and if they would fix it. If anyone could answer this question i would appreciate it!!! THANKS!!!
I own a 20GB Windows IPOD the old one
1 year warranty
THANKS

I had the same problem on my 2G 20GB iPod (for Mac, but same exact hardware nonetheless). After much hassles with the Apple Repair line (where I found I was covered by the 90-day warranty), I called my local Apple Store. There, the resident tech and iPod owner explained to me that there actually was a design flaw in these iPods that causes the jack to break, and that Apple replaces your broken iPod with a shiny new one as a result. Not only that, but the free coverage period for this repair is extended for a full year (not the normal 90-day period).
I have to say that I'm disappointed in Apple that they recognize this hardware flaw, but nowhere is it noted, even after a grueling ordeal on the Apple Service line. If I didn't have a local Apple Store, I may never have found out about this.
Hope this helps.

thanks for the info
So just let me get this stright, i bought my IPOD from some store but it was an offical apple retailer (dont know if it matters or not)

I don't think it matters where you purchased your iPod. As long as you have a valid Serial # (which I'm assuming they use to confirm date of purchase to check the 120-day window), then Apple will replace the broken iPod with a brand spankin new one.
I'm heading to the Apple Store (hopefully) this week, so I'll see what other info I can garner on this.
# 4 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
I dropped my iPod a very short distance, ie from my hand to my desk so all of about 10-20cm. then one side of the audio in my headphones stopped working. tried other headphones nad aux out, same deal. Then a couple wks later it stopped outputting sound at all. So I went through the online repair registration. Going through that, it says if you damaged it but don't tell them, then send it to Apple & they find out it was damaged by the user then you'd be liable for repair costs plus additional costs (if i remember rightly) so I (stupidly) told them my precious had a small (tiny) fall and progressively stopped working. I got home last night to an answer phone message saying it would be ?199 +VAT to repair it!!!!!! BTW its an old style 20g Win iPod, new Oct '02. But ?199?!!!! Thats highway robbery. Do you think that a) my problem MAY be attributed to the same headphone jack issue and that b) i may be able to revoke my online repair request and put it through again as a warranty issue?
Furthermore, does anyone know of someone that can do a repair more economically in the UK? something a little less of a ripoff than the ?199 Apple are trying to fleece me for?

sry to say but i dont think that your problem had to do with the same issue
I dont think that you can revoke your repair, even if you do they have your S/N, they might have tagged your problem with your S/N.

# 7 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
Yep,
i have exactly the same problem and have heard of other similar cases.
Unfortunately my 90 days have just finished, so i'm guessing i'm kind of screwed!?!
Although if it is true that they extended the warranty to 1 year for this type of defect then i hope i'm in luck.
To make things more complicated i purchased my ipod in the u.s but live in germany, i wonder who i can call?
Does anyone know the free apple number for apple germany support?
I had to go and register my ipod so now the website won't show me the free number (as my 90 days are up), it only show the number that costs ?40,90 per problem??!!!!
Or is there at least some kind of e-mail address i can write to?
# 8 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
If you can, contact an Apple reseller in Germany and see if they can help. If you can find someone willing to be somewhat helpful, they will tell you all you need to know.
Also, unless the guy at the Apple store was lying to me, you should be covered under the 1-year window for this broker headphone jack problem.
# 9 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
I have recived a package from Apple Canada telling me to put my IPod in and send it off, well wondering if any1 knows how long the service repair will take b4 i get my old 1 back or a brand new 1?

# 10 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
i have recivied my IPOD back turns out they sent me a new 1. Not quite sure that it is completely new though cause: it's charged fully which is wat i did b4 sending it for repair, and he headphone jack i can see a crack it looks like the stuck a ring around the remote part. But 1 wierd thing is that the version of the IPOD is 1.3 and the main menu insead of the ABOUT menu its replaced by a BACKLIGHT menu.

# 11 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
i don't think they would glue your old one back together, is it an actual crack in the same place you can see or just a seam?
My new one also came back fully charged so i thiink that's normal.
I'm assuming it must be brand new as there are no scratches whatsoever and it also had it's "Don't steal music" wrapper on...
# 12 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
Forgot to let you know that I got a new iPod too. I was fortunate enough to have a local Apple store to go to. They took one look at my iPod, entered some stuff into my computer, and gave me a brand spankin' new 2G 20GB iPod (machine only--no earbuds or other accoutrements). Also gave me new warranty and other requisite paperwork, and sent me on my way.
I tried to pry the Apple guy re: the corporate stance on this recurring earphone jack problem, and he wouldn't bite. He just smiled and handed me my new iPod.
Glad to hear both of you were able to get you broken pods replaced F.O.C.
# 13 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
Okay... Inside your remote, there is a little plastic ring. It is right @ the end by the headphone jack (inside).
What you gotta do is take this little ring out and just put it over your heaphone jack on the iPod. Well, this wont work if you actually want to use the remote but, your iPod headphone port wont break again. This is really good if you are past your warranty.

# 14 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
cool tip, could you maybe repost the 2nd picture, it won't load properly??
I think i'll try to make some sort of homemade plug though so i can switch between remote/no remote!
# 15 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
Hm, they both work fine for me...?
# 16 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
same here they do work
but poor quality cant really see what you did

# 17 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
ok, works now but also can't see what you did...
# 18 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
Well, I have the 20GB 2Gen one as well and the headphone socket died last Friday. I called Apple in Ireland and the technical support lady was very nice but as the iPod was outside of warranty (by 3 weeks) there was nothing else she could do but charge me ?299 for a repair!
I made the point about it being sooooo expensive and how I loooove my iPod, isn't there anything she could do, so she took my details and asked if I wanted to speak to Customer Relations.
There a guy was really helpful and said that since it was just outside the warranty, they'd extend it, so I was passed on again to the last person. She went through the reset test (we both laughed about this but she said that she had to!), then she said she'd get a courier to collect it and they woould repair it.
There has been no mention of a charge so far, so fingers crossed!

# 20 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
NOOOOOOO neezeee!
Please let me know if Apple finally acquiesces on their design flaw and gets you a new 3G. I would almost want mine to break again so I could do the same.
As I mentioned before, I tried to pump the tech guy at the Apple Store to admit more about this design flaw, but he wouldn't take the bait. Nor would he allow me to get a new 3G in its stead.
Even worse, my friend just got a 3G 30GB, and it's soooo coool.
Let me know how this turns out. And make sure you pull out all the tricks to get the 3G you deserve.
# 21 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
i also really let them have it conerning the bad design, even made up a story about a friend of mine who'd had his repaired twice and then had his model break just outside of warranty.. no luck...
It really bites though, ppl that don't want to use the remote with their iPod are sitting on a timebomb that apple will only fix until warranty expires (or just after!)
# 22 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
Im having trouble finding the plastic ring. Is it the ring thats attached to the remote body or is it the ring inside the plug that goes into the ipod? How do I remove the ring once I find it?
TIA

Same question here. Can anyone help?
# 24 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
It is inside the remote. Open it up. Pull on the cord a bit (so it goes past the notch).
Pry up (out) the board on the side with the wires.
Hold the end of the board and pull out twards the cord.
Wiggle it a bit until the front (where you pop your headphones in) comes out. Now a little white ring will pop out.
Now you know where to put it...
To put your remote back together...
Put the front end (where u put ur headphones) in first.
Put the board back down.
Push the cord back past the notch.
Then put the white back back on... And ur done!
# 25 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
has anybody had any luck with a earphone socket repair?
(have the 5gb version with no remote to butcher)
i reckon a nylon or rubber washer would be ideal, but where to start?
# 26 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
Does this flaw happens to all versions or just the old ones?

# 27 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
I did the mod today. Good work CoachPotatoe. Did you create the mod yourself?
This mod is 100% reversible as long as I can figure out how to take the ring out of the IPOD. It seems to be wedged inside now.
My headphone jack is ever so slightly off center and the ring is tight around 1/4 around the jack with gaps around the other 3/4 around. Im wondering if this will cause stress on the solder points on the circuit board ?
# 28 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
Here's my update:
DHL collected the Pod on a Thursday afternoon and I got a spanking new 20GB (Ok, 2nd gen, same as my old one) back on the following Monday morning.
That's over a week ago and I haven't received any invoice or any mention of payment so far. I know they said that they'd extend the warranty, but I saw that they were 'Creating an invoice' online. The online status still reads 'Invoice Created' but I've not heard anything.
Unless thing's change, I'm really rather pleased with the whole thing! YAY!

Hi. My 2G 20GB Pod is currently with Apple to have the infamous cracked headphone socket problem fixed under warranty.
I'm keen to avoid this happening in the future, and never use the remote, so the fix detailed above sounds like a good idea, except . . . will I stil be able to use my iTrip if I do this?

# 30 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
My headphone jack is also slightly off center and this ring solution may be a bit testy. I was wondering, does that ring go all the way down, like is it like the remote, and completely fills the hole? And does anyone have pictures of where the headphone jack is soldered to the motherboard?

# 31 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
listen i hav this proble AGAIN!!!!!!!
this suck!
ok, if you break the ring of the IPOD like i have. you will had made a little hole, and you will have exosed some connector for the remote. this will make you annoyed, if you use any other input divice other than the orig. headphones from IPOD if you dont put it in it will restart your IPOD. so if you hav this problem i advise you get it fixed, by CALLING APPLE, NONE OF THAT WEB SITE S*** IF THE PEOPLE AT APPLE TELL YOU TO GO ON THE WEB SITE LIE AND SAY YOU DONT HAVE THE INTERNET, due to my experenice i advis you to only call them and get it fixed that way. and if you dont have this problem i advise you to BE CAREFUL, my advise is to either to advoid this problem to:
1. use the original headphones
2. if you plan on using other headphones i advise you to use 1's that don hav such hevy jacks. EG. DJ Headphones
3. if you want to use DJ headphones use the remote, if you dont want to remote then MAKE SURE that youe IPOD is not moving (set it down)
4. If you even see a little crack in the headphone jack CALL APPLE it will get worse!

After 2 yrs my ipod headphone jack started losing audio to L chan
wiggling plug or holding in a particular spot sorted this so I was sure that interior was mis aligned - opening ipod revealed a sealed jack unit so I backed off and read this thread - bejaysus couchpotoatro had the answer - I had no remote so improvised with a small section of cable tie (2-2.5mm width cut to bout 10mm long) pressed into groove and the f**ker was 100% Thanks Couchpotato - Peace to all - NOW (requires regular activity) !! # 34 Re: Ipod Headphone Jack Broken
I posted a new thread about this without looking at this one! I'm a dink!
Anyway I had this problem on my original 5 gb and fixed it in a similar fashion to Noix but now my iTrip won't fit in as the jack is designed to slip over the plastic part that keeps breaking. I have a machine shop in my building and am going to have them take the offending metal part of the iTrip. Hopefully this doesn't mess with it's performance.
