Firewire/USB 2.0

Hey everyone, I'm pretty new to iPods, and I just found this site yesterday. Pretty cool. I recently ordered a 3rd Gen 15 gb iPod, and i'm curious if i absolutely need a firewire port in my computer. It's a Dell Dimension 4400, and i know it doesnt have a firewire port, but i'm not sure if it has a USB 2.0 port, i think it may still have an old USB port. So, should i buy a firewire/usb 2.0 card? or am i ok with my hardware right now? Thanks for any help...

If you have USB 1.1, I'd strongly recommend getting a combo card with USB 2.0 and Firewire. It will be WAY too slow otherwise. That way you'll have the best of both worlds.

I prefer the firewire for the ipod, mainly because it's powered (provided you have a 6pin rather than a 4pin card). That way you don't have to worry about your ipod dying from lack of juice during a long synch, and you can charge it up through your computer if you don't have the AC charger handy...

But your also going to want USB 2.0 ports for other applications that don't take firewire--digital cameras, etc--so if you're going to upgrade, I'd recommend putting both in.

Also remember that if you plan to use USB you NEED to buy the USB cable. And to use the cable supplied you NEED a firewire port. So basicly you have to buy something :)
Id say just buy a cheap firewire PCI card. thats what i did. Mainly because it charges it too.
Although, i do plan to grab a usb cable soon, as most people have USB so its better when using my pod as a external hard disk.
